‘Love and Light’ — What Does it Mean?

What is Meant by the Saying Love and Light?

This is an interesting conundrum.  It is a saying that has become a standard greeting in the spiritual community but what exactly does it mean?

“Where there is love there is life”  — Mahatma Gandhi

Divine You Book by Cherie Roe Dirksen

I touched on this adage in my book Divine You — Redefining Love in the New Earth but never really found a satisfactory answer.  But, hang on, do I see a light at the end of this tunnel?

I was listening to Deepak Chopra (click here to see which one of his books TOTALLY changed my perspective of success forever!) the other day and he was discussing light in the context of photosynthesis.

Science and Light

Can you believe it, science rearing its technical head in a spiritual blog?  Actually, the bridge between spirituality and science is closing in rapidly.

Let’s put this simply because I don’t want your attention to wane: Light creates form.  There you go, in a nutshell!

Ha, but what does this have to do with spirituality?

Everything!

Unity in DiversityWe are spirit having a human or ‘material’ experience.  We are incarnate — in form in a dimension that requires atoms (which are pretty much free-floating molecules) to coagulate into matter to make up ‘stuff’ (I know, my scientific prowess is amazing — I’m surprised New Science magazine hasn’t lassoed me to write for their journal yet).

Suffice to say that we need this ‘stuff’, or, more eloquently, solid matter to navigate this third dimension of physical, tangible reality.

Okay, now I know you’re an intelligent bunch so you’re still with me…

The sun’s rays are transported to Earth through the ether and provides organisms with light energy which they convert into chemical energy — a process otherwise known as photosynthesis.

Even the word ‘photosynthesis’ is profound — it is derived from the Greek photo-, “light”, and synthesis, “putting together”.

Without light, plants won’t grow and without plants, herbivores would die and without herbivores, then carnivores and omnivores die — you get the picture.

Are you beginning to put things together here?  Light = putting together.

Right, so Where is Love in all of This?

Love — although it can’t be proven in a laboratory — is the glue that binds existence together for us spiritual beings.  It’s what makes life interesting and adds to our staying power here.

Without love, what would be the point, right?

Ergo, in my humble opinion, love is what keeps us on this planet.  It is what holds the form together, the egg to our cake — the binding ingredient of all biological life.

So light provides us with form and love keeps us in form — interesting, huh?

Let’s Put this Together, Shall We?

What does love and light mean

In conclusion to this verbiage, I’d like to sum this up by adding; there is another wise saying in spiritual circles — Namaste — which means ‘I bow to the God in you’ — it’s beautiful and shows respect.

It is a recognition of the divine spark or aspect of the creator/God/source within another.

However, of late, we have this new ‘greeting’ to contend with, ‘love and light’. It can either send a shiver of contempt down your spine or fill you with good vibes.

I know that for some the former is true…it may irritate more than invoke feelings of euphoria — hell, it can irritate me sometimes too — especially when you wonder if the person whimsically tossing it about actually grasps the meaning of it or if they just like to poop candyfloss — but, eh, whatever floats your boat.

Now, hopefully, you can say or interpret this with some relevant meaning (as per the above discussion) aka ‘may you be held lovingly in good form’ (or something to that  waffling effect).

What’s your take on this adage?  Do you use it?  Does it get your heckles up?  What does it mean to you?

  1. Jesus IS light and love. I saw/felt this for myself. He doesn’t look at all how I thought he would! He was a Lion first, running towards me. Then he swooshed to just a few feet behind me. I saw a shape of light that gave off the most beautiful feeling of love, acceptance, complete contentment, absolutely everything good and wonderful in the very bright comfort of his light. He didn’t speak but I obtained knowledge through his light. Sounds weird but I swear on the bible that is what I saw. There is a few things that Ive left out for personal reasons but if you are interested…dm me. I will tell the whole story to you.

    • Hi Robert, what a beautiful experience!

It doesn’t sound weird at all. In fact, light is encoded with information, so it makes perfect sense.

I also understand that with these experiences some information is personal and meant for you.

Thank you for sharing this encounter here.

  5. Thank you for starting this discussion!! Actually, i found this article while looking for the first instances of it being used publicly as a greeting, farewell, blessing, wishing or the like. the reason i went on a search was to ascertain the person/people responsible for the phrases “Love & Light” and “Light & Love” i should put it this way, i began saying it to my ex girlfriend who was obsessed with hearing & saying i love you. If i didnt say, “i love you” she assumed i no longer did. instead of making her feel like she was absolved, i chose to use Love as a concept that she could choose to see/feel….or not. this way she couldnt hear in her mind “i love you, so i dont mind your lies, cheating, manipulation, games…ect”. 😉 ❤ i chose to say "Light & Love " instead of what i said to other people. she would say she was in a dark place & so i sent her ***her own idea of a light in the dark*** by suggesting anything in particular, she could reason it away and especially if i said it. Love was placed so that her idea of love could be evoked. the point she was a very argumentative person. some have termed it "oppositional defiance disorder". either way, she took an opposite stance to anything that suggested she was less than in the right or justified in doing something. instead of suggesting to her what or how to feel, I chose to let her decide what that meant to her in that moment. i ran around early in 2012 stashing this idea & phrase everywhere i could. i happened upon a "lightworker" page or post & wrote it there…a few weeks on months later i saw it beginning to appear in pictures with dates on them. it looked like some one was claiming it 😉 ❤ i am humble enuff to be open to the possibility that i picked it up on that post or picture, but im sure enuff that i said it months before i saw it. i did find the picture circulating a few months back but the original post no longer exists and nor do the comments section where i first wrote it publicly(to my memory) i used it as a phrase to do the same thing for people that might question how i could love someone that i hadnt seen, spoken to in person or even written to prior to the comment containing Light & Love it meant you understand love i have this for you in your terms. if you are in a dark place i send my inner light and/or a light to brighten your way out of the dark. love is chemical & electrical interactions. varying degrees of love can be achieved by any one with a functioning, conscious brain. the levels may differ but unless you are devoid of serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin, & other endorphins, horomones, & neurotransmitters. some know love but have been hurt accompanied by the phrase "i love you" i just wanted to convey *love in the heart & a light in the dark* + light adds vitamin d and other nutrients to the body. it was not meant to be "new age rhetoric" or a "religious reference" it jus meant a love in your heart & a light in the dark. im half the world away and if i could evoke this in you i would…since i can only type, know that in my deepest essence, i send you this blessing from within me & hope that you also receive it from existence itself. 😉 ❤ sorry for the Novel. Thank you!! i love you and i wish you light in dark spaces… I send you *Light & Love* and i wish you *Love & Light* or short hand ❤ & 😀 …. 😀 ❤ thank you . again!!

  6. Wow amazing. You are so close to finding God! In the Bible it says “God is love” and Jesus who is God the Son in human flesh said ” I am the light of the world.” The Bible says Jesus ” created all things” & “holds all things together.” Since you mentioned light forms and love sustains this is fascinating in matching the truths of the Bible. Sorry no verse references but u can google the quotes to find where in the bible they are from. May the light of the world fill your heart with His most perfect love.

  7. er, scientifically that’s close enough .. “atoms .. pretty much free-floating” PARTICLES, in 99.99999999 % empty nothingness – molecules are GROUPINGS of atoms – all chem reactions, biological interactions are dances of the outermost of these

Namaste I’ve heard as “I bow to the Divine which I perceive through you”

‘Course the Xtians will point out there’s a real bad guy who is a master of Light – (hm throw in my whole pers. philosophy in a Blog Reply ? Why not..) to me its paths btwn what I’d call the Crowley Fallacy of ‘Love Under Will’, ‘overstanding’ (to borrow a Black Lib’n term) – Love is something you UNDERstand, our connection to Infinite Intelligence.. Its totally ok to withdraw from those who hurt us, but the closer we are to the Divine Force of Truth, Knowing and Total Forgiveness the more powerful we become – even if our liberty or even out bodies are taken from us… (Discuss ?)

Oh sorry its an old post – couldn’t resist – PS could i be in Dr Who Lond PLS PLS PLS ?

    Namaste 🙂

  12. Hi I am from Greece.
Thank you for the opportunity to think more about this subject!
Light has also practically the function of inspiring and making mind clear and innovative( except of course for the desert heat). The worm season is longer in Greece and it gives the opportunity to be more easy going with life. So SUN Light for me is… and the bio-chemical- energy of life and the mind stimulator and psychical healer…it does bring positivity in!

And Loooove is the positivity it self to me. It brings us closer and hayer, it gives us the drive energy.

Love and Light to you all may dear friends all over the world.
Seek for them both and for the Light and for Love…They both will guide you to grate experience of body and soul.. That anyway are one and the same.

  13. For years my guide has been closing with “Love and Light”…. I was amazed when I found others using the same phrase. Light is the spark of existence, the spiritual wonder, the oneness; Love is the physical unity, the connection, the drive to be together. Well, that’s what they told me….

I knew what it meant to me, which is how you have so elegantly put it. Thank you! I will be posting this link on my Facebook page.
