Art Tutorial Video: Drawing Poppies onto Canvas with Alcohol Markers

My previous art blog was about my new discovery of the wonders of alcohol markers. You can view that here: Alcohol Markers – How to Use Them in Painting

Today, I recorded the whole start to finish process of drawing an entire background of poppies onto canvas – time-lapsed to 4 minutes with full commentary. You dont want to miss this! Click on the pic below:

Alcohol Markers – How to Use Them in Painting

My sister gifted me with this awesome set of alcohol markers. I’ve been experimenting with them straight onto canvas. They’re so cool and blend so well.

They have like a watercolour/silkscreen effect. Below is my first attempt, I started off outlining in black then colouring in but that made the colours blend with the black (you can tell I’m a novice, right?) and produced a muddy effect. So, I then did the background colour first and went on to outline the proteas and foliage in black.

This is just a doodle and will probably be the background of a painting but if you’re thinking of giving these a try, I highly recommend it.

I have sealed this with a water-based varnish. I assume using any oil-based product with these would make them run but water-based products seem to be fine.

Update: I painted a sunbird over the above background in acrylics. Let me know what you think jn the comments below 😁 Here’s the finished artwork:
