Anthropomorphic Animal Art: Introducing Pigeon Holmes

Pigeon Investigator Holmes was hand painted and cut out of layers of cardboard to give him that 3D feel. He’s going to be one out of a collection of anthropomorphic animals I’m hatching! So be sure to follow this blog as the next little critter is a doozy!

The design says, “Pigeon Investigator Holmes was conducting his investigation going on the crumbs his client had left. Holmes was keeping abreast of the case.”

5 Ways to Create a Positive LifeWho’s in Charge?

You’re probably familiar with the saying ‘what you think you create’ but how can you seriously filter every bad thought? There is a way, I promise. But before we delve into the amazing powers each of us possess, we have to get one thing straight.

There’s only one person responsible for what you think and do and that’s YOU.

If the thought of being the creator of your reality scares the willies out of you, then read on…

The Freedom to Be Happy, to Be You

Can you remember learning how to swim or ride a bike?  Can you see how determined you were to succeed because you knew the pay-off was going to be huge?

You may have started off with water-wings, splashing about aimlessly— gulping in water — or peddling your heart out whilst trying to maintain your balance even with the training wheels on!  But that child never gave up.

Then what came next once the wheels were removed?  Probably scrapes and bruises the first week but did that deter you?  Did you give up then?  Probably not.  You wanted to ride!  You were hell-bent on feeling the wind on your face and the freedom that would bring with it.

Same goes for swimming — gliding about in the water refreshes and frees your body of weight.  You knew that swimming was going to be the biggest trip ever!

Where am I going with this?  Your thoughts need training wheels/water-wings if you want to experience the same freedom from negative thought.  And here’s how you’re going to do it…

Getting Real Right NOW

Here are a few things you can start to do today to become more aware and proactive with your thoughts:

  • Morning Motivation — When you wake up, give yourself 5-10 minutes to think about what how you want to see this day play out.  See if you can catch any worrisome or negative thoughts before they take hold of the exercise.  Put up a STOP sign in your mind and gently kick those blighters to the curb.  Then bring your focus back to visualizing your positive day ahead.  Try to smile and see/feel yourself enjoying this bright new day.  Emotions back your thoughts into manifestation.
  • Marrying the Mind — When you start to get a hold on your thought stream and just how much power you DO have over it, you can start to have a better relationship with your thinking.  You are now in control and you can focus your inner dialogue on what serves you instead of calling in all the unwanted experiences.  Start your affirmations off with a strong ‘I am…’.  For example ‘I am going to have a great day today’, ‘I am going to have a safe trip’, etc.  Try avoid the phrases ‘I desire’ or ‘I want’ because it only brings more desiring and wanting for the future.  When you use ‘I am’ it is in the present tense and is happening right now not in some future timeline.
  • Mind Mangle Cleanse — During the day (if you are but a mere mortal) you will probably find yourself slipping into worry, blame, anger, despair and an array of other harmful mind banter.  You may even find that your head is throbbing because of all the distorted ‘mind mangling’ that’s going on up there.  Here’s  your chance to hold up that STOP sign again and see if you can look at things from a different perspective.  Most of what we worry about never comes to pass and most judgments/situations when seen from a different angle can evoke empathy instead of anger.  See if you can alchemize your thinking — in other words, find the treasure in the trash.   • SmartSelectImage_2022-11-01-15-09-45Re-Member — We often get lost in ‘doing’ and not ‘being’.  Try to remember all the things that make you happy and bring you joy. Start a gratitude journal (see my gratitude journal to your right and you can get yours by clicking on the picture) When you smile the world smiles with you.  So, remember to feel gratitude for life, nature and the people that make your world spin.  Look at every magnificent dawn or sunset as a blessing, every fragrant flower or birdsong as a gift, every smile or hug as a gesture of love and draw on those experiences when you’re in a negative frame of mind.  See if you can remove yourself from a negative situation and sit under a tree or listen to some soothing music.  Seek out those small but beautiful moments in your life and embrace them.  Hold them close to your chest and bring them out when you need to.  It’s bound to make you smile. You can always alter your reality at any time.  Don’t forget that.  If you choose to stay in the gloom, then just know that ‘this too shall pass’.
  • Over and Out — At the end of the day, review what happened and see if you can pick out any situations that you have turned around in reality.  Did you manage to have a good day?  Did things turn out like you affirmed in the morning?  Or close to?  Or can you do better tomorrow?  Keep trying and if you do see results it’s going to make you more determined — just like that little tike on the bicycle, gearing up for the next day’s practice.  Because you know that practice makes perfect!

You will get a grip on your oh-so-powerful thought stream and you’ll be able to eventually steer those thoughts to benefit your life in ways that will make your head spin — in a good way!

Now it’s up to you to give yourself a reason to smile every day.

Creating a Forest Getaway in Your Lounge

One of my favourite places to be is in a forest. How about you?

The comfort of being surrounded by trees, the freshness of the oxygenated air, the coolness kissing your skin, the aroma of organic mulch and the sound of a trickling stream.

Nothing like it.

It’s rejuvenating, refreshing and lets you truly feel your innate connectivity to Gaia. Thing is, not all of us can get to stroll through a forest every day.

This is the reason why I love to create woodland scenes on canvas. It’s my bit of escapism into an imaginary world of forest fantasy. Below is my latest painting called, ‘FOREST CHARM‘.

I’ve tried to capture all of the above-mentioned forest characteristics using a cool, pastel palette. I hope it evokes some of the pleasures of the woods for you.

I’ve been really getting into drawing on my tablet recently. It’s great fun and a good way to be productive away from the confines of an office, studio or sitting behind a computer. I get creative sitting out in the garden or while I’m hanging ten with a cup of tea.

But is it cheating?

The Artist Debates

A lot of people in the artistic community feel that digital painting/drawing is basically cheating.

Well, yes and no.

I don’t think anything can replace the energy, vibrancy and feel of original art painted with real, genuine paint! But I do, as an acrylic and mixed media artist, feel a certain freedom on the tablet.

For one, there’s no mess. No mixing of paint or scrambling to find that sharpener for your blunt 3B pencil. I absolutely love that perk! But I also like the zoom and extensive texture features. You can experiment and really take details to new dizzying heights.

In saying that, I will never stop physically painting. I sometimes like the grotty side of it and getting to smeer paint onto canvas with my bare hands and play with metals and different materials.

However, digital painting is a great tool and can get you to explore and discover new techniques and avenues without expense or time constraints.

Coming Out of the Woods — ‘The Fall and The Return’ (My Latest Painting)

What’s it About?

This painting is from the perspective of the person coming out of the woods onto the path. It’s a pause for observation or perhaps even hesitation.

Who is coming out of the woods and where are they heading?

  • Are they coming home?
  • Are they entering a new phase of their journey?
  • Are they visiting someone?

There is an eerie feeling as one wonders what their intentions are and a sense of hope as the village in the distance looks promising and the birds are also looking out onto the village, giving it a sense of serenity.

The title was formed from a combination of suggestions from friends. I put the artwork out onto my facebook page and asked my peeps to see what title they came up with.

I eventually settled on a combination of 2 suggested titles — one was about ‘fall’ (being a very autumnal landscape) and one was about ‘the return’ (as in the prodigal son), which I liked very much. So, the title has an ambiguous meaning which I thought was fitting.

The Style

I tried a new style which merged my landscape (in the background) with an overlay of my tree silhouettes in the foreground — giving it a sense of greater depth.

The background received a yellow ‘wash’ of paint to make it appear a little blurred and the trees were executed in a sharp manner (I used permanent ink for the smaller branches) to render the forest more in focus.

Why it Hurts So Much When Someone Lies

What really grates my carrots (and just about any decent, authentic person trying to live their truth) are liars — those truth benders, fibbers, perjurers and yarn spinners.

Since moving to a small town, I have discovered that there are more fabricators in this world than I ever dared believe!

I’ve come to truly grasp that people judge you on their own principles. In other words, if they lack certain morals, they’ll assume you are just as devious as they are.

Trusting People are Honest

I love Nelson Mandela’s take on believing that people have integrity until proven otherwise.

He used to start off with the assumption that you are dealing with him in good faith, in the hope that this will bring out the good in people and improve the chance that they will reveal their better selves.

Some might say it is naive to give others the benefit of the doubt but Mandela believed that, even by making oneself vulnerable by trusting others, we at least give decency and honesty a chance. And in doing that, possibly attract integrity and honor from others.

This is how I’ve tried to live my life but, oh boy, I’ve been challenged lately! How are things your end?

Hitting the Ball Out the Park!

I love how synchronicity works, listen to this: I was pondering all the fibby-fibblers people have told me recently and trying to better understand why they behave in such a way.

I settled down for the evening with my favorite series when one of the characters started lecturing another character about telling the truth and said something in the vein of, ‘when you don’t tell the truth you deny the other of their dignity’.

Whoa! Well, I don’t know about you but I almost fell out of my seat…that really hit home with me. So that’s why it hurts so much!

Why We Feel Deflated with Liars

Dignity can be defined as our magnificence. I don’t truly think anyone can strip us of that but it can really sting us for a while.

In my opinion, the liar’s dignity is more fragmented when trust is broken. So, anyone hatching an equivocation should seriously ponder that one!

When we are the ones on the receiving end of a bald-faced lie, it may hurt our pride/ego/feelings/heart but inevitably we can pick ourselves up and learn from the experience with head held high (don’t be disheartened by the experience! There are plenty of genuine gems in the world.).

However, it hurts when trust is broken, but — as Mandela tried to purvey — your heart is in the right place when you give people the benefit of the doubt.

Don’t call yourself ‘stupid’ or ‘foolish’ when this happens, call yourself integrous — it’s a good thing! However, you must learn to guard yourself, set boundaries and try to identify the traits of a liar if and when you come up against the universal test again.

The Opposite Side of the Scale ain’t Pretty

The antithesis would be walking around in a world where we are suspicious of everyone — not a very nice projection, wouldn’t you say? You may even start attracting unsavory characters purely through your intention.

I’m not saying that you must just trust willy-nilly — no, you can initially give people the benefit of the doubt but if any of the below traits start red-flagging you are perfectly within your integrity to put a stop to it and walk away or not buy into the BS.

What to do About Liars

Learn to:

  1. Trust your gut instinct (what is your first impression? Your body can pick up on the energy fields of others),
  2. read body signals (especially rapid eye movements and people who can’t stare you in the eyes when talking. There can also be excessive fidgeting),
  3. take note of inconsistency and
  4. rely on your innate wisdom — if alarm bells are going off it’s time to wake up. Some liars are master manipulators and lies can only be detected once you really get to know them. So, your first impression may be positive but, down the line, things may change. Heed those warning signals!

I suppose, more importantly, don’t let it get to you. Don’t let it change your conduct. Don’t let other people’s lack of morality alter your authenticity. Don’t let it change your view on people in general.

Yeah, there are liars out there but there are a lot of good people too. Keep your focus on them. Navigate the minefields of deceivers but keep you eye on the prize — a world where truth is the only way forward.

Now to drop the spanner in the works: Try to bear in mind that there are no facts only interpretations. Everyone has their own truth and our job is to find the compassion for the ones whose perspective differs from our own.

We’re all walking a difficult path. Barring the ones who lie for their own ill gain, most people lie because of insecurities or to mask their own pain. Compassion goes a long way.

However, compassion doesn’t mean you put your neck on the chopping block — it merely offers a deeper understanding of why people lie.

6 Impossible Things to do Every Day

Go Easy on the Mundane

Life can be wonderful when you’re a dreamer. Life can be even more wonderful when you are a dreamer and a doer!

Nothing trips us up more that boredom or monotony. As the saying goes, ‘boring is as boring does’. But, lucky for us, we live in a world full of unmapped, unexplored and unchartered territory — both physically and metaphysically.

Ready For Expanded Thinking?

“After all, the word ‘impossible’ only really spells out ‘I’m Possible’.”

You’ve probably realized by now that you are the one creating your life experience by what you’re feeling and doing in this NOW moment. Your past does not define you but your present shapes your future.

If your life is not exciting you, you’re the one forgetting to inject the zest.

So why not start the day, as Lewis Carroll so aptly suggested, by thinking of 6 (even 1 will do!) impossible things you could do to explode the old and catalyze the new. After all, the word ‘impossible’ only really spells out ‘I’m Possible’.

Let me suggest some starting points:

  1. Start Small. Imagine something you want that you’re likely to be able to achieve today. This could be anything from doing that chore that’s been irritating you to exploring a new path whilst taking the dogs for a walk. Why is this going to help you? Because tackling household/garden jobs that you put off give you an immense sense of satisfaction when you finally do them — it incites you to do more tomorrow. Trying new things like taking a walk where you’ve never ventured before is breaking routine and while routine can be a good thing in some areas of your life it can also kill adventure.
  2. Think Big. Is there something you’ve always wanted to do but never got around to? Do you think you’re too old to play the piano? Or too overweight to water ski? Or maybe you think you’re too poor to travel? Think again! It’s those ‘I’m Possible’ dreams that light a fire under the derriere and bring back sensational living! Where there’s a will there’s a way, so start off by finding a picture of your desire and pin it to your vision board (you know, that thing you have up somewhere in your house to remind you of what you want to manifest. Don’t have one yet? There’s your other I’m Possible task!) and start taking action along with looking out for synchronicities (don’t know what that is? READ HERE). Impossible is sure to follow!
  3. Visualize. Like I said in point no. 2 — get your vision board started and watch the impossible happen! There’s nothing like walking into your office (or whatever room applies here) and seeing all those pretty pictures of things to keep aligning yourself to. We think we know what we want but, back in reality, there are so many thoughts coursing through our brain that we tend to ‘backseat’ our dreams in lieu of daily matters. Then we forget the things (big or small) that mean something to us. Don’t let your dreams escape you! Every time you think of something you would like to experience — pin it! I walked into a fabulous spa the other day and took one of their brochures. Why? Because even though I wasn’t in town to get a massage that day, it’s something I would love to experience — so, it’s now firmly pinned to my vision board. If I didn’t do that, I would’ve eventually disregarded wanting a sensational 2 hour treatment and would’ve also probably forgotten about the spa itself nevermind it’s location. Now I won’t ’cause I see it every day and smile when I think of going there for my special treat.
  4. Alice in Wonderland QuoteA Pat on the Back. Stop every day to think of the wonderful things you have accomplished thus far in your life. We very seldom stop to let things sink in. It could be the fact that you raised an awesome child (it probably felt impossible when you first looked into his/her eyes as a newborn) or you finally conquered a fear and boarded a plane one day and went overseas for the first time (which may have sparked many other trips). Some things may seem old hat to some and incredible feats to others — don’t underestimate what you’ve accomplished. Even the little things shape our lives. Give yourself some kudos and then keep doing more impossible things!
  5. Burn the Box! You’ve heard of thinking outside the box — which is the Impossible Club’s credo — but burning the box is more potent. In fact, the box never existed in the first place, Schrodinger! Stretch your mind to the infinite possibility of all realities in all directions of space and time. Try lucid dreaming and cruise the universe — let your impossible imagination run riot. The universe is expanding and creating the most beautiful work of art with all its nebulae, solar systems, whirling galaxies and neutron star collisions just to name a few. Expand your mind to take it all in and then apply it to your life. How can you be creatively expansive? How can you use your divine talents to smear this life experience with explosive colour, fizzing verve and sparkling tenacity? Baby, you’re a firework! Thanks Ms. Perry, how right you are.
  6. Rest. Doing relentlessly impossible things all day requires that you need a balance of good R&R. But don’t stop your imagination from thinking of impossible ways to relax. You can dream up a wild bath-time relaxation routine that involves submarines, rubber ducks and lavender oil or you could take some time out to shut those weary little eyes and have a night full of dreaming up new ways to be a super nova!

And remember — you’re the only one who can make the impossible possible.

Law of Attraction fundi’s (a nifty little African word for ‘experts’) will probably resonate with the above definition of this magical incantation — is it ringing a few bells for you?

As you may be aware already, there are 3 fundamental steps to using the LOA:

  • Ask (formulate the desire or thought then write it down/and or verbalize it)
  • Believe (embody the feeling of having what you want)
  • Receive (make believe as if you have it already, act like you have it, speak as if you have it, know that it is coming and…voila!)

Create Your Life Through Magic

Is magic real? The dictionary definition for magic says it all:

The power of apparently influencing the course of events by using mysterious or supernatural forces.”

Well, my friend, you are that mysterious force!

What is the difference between prayers, affirmations and spells? In my opinion…nothing. They are just different tools to accomplish the same thing.

We all know that words are powerful. Their very vibration can heal us, build us up, convey our love or sway us to kill each other, tear us down, cast doubt and pain…you get the picture.

How you use the word is your baby — as is using any kind of energy (words are energetic as they carry a frequency). It’s a responsibility in and of itself.

Hate speech or gossip can greatly affect the lives of the people you are casting the words at or about. Speaking positive, loving words can also affect the ones we are directing the energy towards.

Which Team Are You On?

There are pretty much 2 teams that I know of:

  1. Service to self or
  2. Service to others.

“A person standing in the light has a shadow.  A person standing in the dark has none.  What does this mean?  Even the best of us have shadows.” Read more about the Shadow Self here.

Even Star Wars brings up this concept through the Sith and the Jedi.

The Sith are classically STS and the Jedi are STO. They both know how to use The Force and there is a fine line that separates ‘good’ from ‘evil’ (something we all must discover within — use our intuition/discernment) which is why it is important to work on accepting and understanding your shadow self.

Party Tricks and Life Conundrums

We all use words, don’t we? Every day. For some of us, every second of every day.

I create as I speakOn some level, you have been casting spells all the time. Look back at your life and try to see how the words you use — to describe yourself or your body, your partner, your children/family/friends, your colleagues, your job, your finances, your car, your neighborhood — are all what you may be experiencing now.

It’s one thing to know a good card trick or to pull something out of the hat but it’s another thing to consciously realize that every thought you think, every word you utter is a declaration of what you are calling into being.

Makes you think, doesn’t it? It also makes you want to staple your gob shut! Lol. Good news is, you can direct your words through awareness.

Here’s what you CAN do to be more mindful of the words you are speaking and how it can change your life and the lives of those around you:

  1. You can easily catch yourself gossiping and turn it around or just stop, apologize to whomever you are speaking to and explain that this is not serving anyone.
  2. You can undoubtedly stop criticizing yourself, your appearance, your children, your partner or anyone else when you’re alert.
  3. You can assuredly choose better words to describe your situation, whatever it may be, to reflect a proclamation of what you want instead of what you think ‘is’. Life doesn’t have to be what it is right now if that’s not what you want. What you are experiencing now is the magic performed yesterday. You’re not a victim of circumstance — you can participate right now in creating a new life as if by magic (*wink, wink, nudge, nudge*).

Hocus pocus? Well, if you think so then so shall it be. That’s how magical you are, you prestidigitator!

There are so many beautifully written books on the subject of present moment awareness, my personal favourites being the Eckhart Tolle books, ‘The Power of Now’ and ‘A New Earth’.  But I would like to touch on it a little bit in this blog.

Why must I be still?

When we are still, we are in the present moment.  When the continuous noise of the mind is silent we experience present moment awareness.

Boat on a Lake by Cherie Roe DirksenEasier said than done, of course, but it can be mastered.  With regular meditation (this just means breathing and quieting the mind for as little as 5 minutes a day) and proper breathing techniques and mantras, one can easily become a master of ones thought pattern.  We use mantras and meditations as ‘training’ wheels to the stillness that is at the very core of our soul.

Once you have mastered this you will no longer need the ‘training’ wheels as you will be able to attain stillness instantly.

The Art of Letting Go

For those of you who are new to these practices, some of the techniques used to bring oneself into the present are very helpful but always bear in mind that you will never need anything to realize this potential whenever you want it.

Some people cling to their mantras and meditation techniques and this can become a very stagnant practice as the Earth shifts into a new gear.  Some practices will already be felt as outdated and one needs to change with the times, so to speak.

So when you feel the need to move onto something else or perhaps nothing else, as the case may be, then trust your intuitions.  As practices for the sake of keeping a ritual going is of no good if you are not progressing.

The STOP Signpost

A useful tool to use is the STOP signpost.  Clearly see a stop sign in your mind’s eye, now use it every time you identify yourself wondering into the terrain of useless or negative thought.

STOP! 

Hold up the sign to your mind.  When you do this it is a distraction to get you to stop dead in your tracks.  Try it for yourself.  Be the ‘lollipop lady’ of your mind by holding up the STOP sign and bringing the traffic of mind noise to a halt to let the helpful and positive thoughts across the road.

For what purpose do I need to get to this ‘Present Moment Awareness’?

Now that you have an idea of how to get to the present moment – what does it do?

“If we could all operate in this space a lot of problems would be alleviated.”

Well, it is the grounding force that enables you to truly live.  The present moment is bliss, peace and tranquility.  It is a tool to help you to find clarity.  But intrinsically it is the place where we are most at peace with ourselves and the outer world.  If we could all operate in this space a lot of problems would be alleviated.

When you are in the moment, there is no thought pattern about past or future there is only the ‘now’.  You experience life as it is now.

When the constant stream of mind-numbing thought is detached we have no fear/stress of future or regret/anger about past.  We are supremely concentrated in the ‘is-ness’ of the now.  It is as simple as it sounds.  When you attain this degree of inner peace you will find out just how perfect you are and everything around you too.

Problems will lose their potency and you will be able to laugh in the face of fear.

What could harm a being as perfect as you? 

You are a soul with no beginning and no end.  What a marvelous space to be in!  That is why some people are addicted to meditation and forget to live!  But the true master finds the balance in-between.

We are still human and have to face the outside world but through the practice of being in the present moment and through awareness itself, you will be able to operate in your current reality with a more peaceful and accepting demeanor.

There are so many basic things that we, as humans, have forgotten.  We don’t forget to eat or drink – so why do we forget to breathe correctly?  We don’t forget to sit on the couch and turn on the telly – so why do we forget to be present?

I am scared of stopping for fear of having to confront what it is I really need to address

Most of us are nervous about being still and we try to occupy every bit of spare time we have in filling it up with nonsense.  All this is really just a cover up for the fact that we fear what we may face when we quiet our minds.

We fear the psyche and all the hidden corners that we have not explored.  We fear the clutter that we have stored in there, packing it in boxes and labeling it for another day that we know, deep down, we don’t ever want to face.

We must face these fears if we are to move on.

I’ve been experimenting in the studio with my favourite colour a

t the moment — gold.

I can’t stop myself from adding highlights, splashes and just general copious amounts of gold to my paintings.

I have finished 2 little zebra paintings with these gold overtones and just love how they’ve come out. I can’t seem to catch it on camera, but when the light hits these little pieces they change completely. It’s almost like the hit another dimension…very abstract darling, with a hint of magic 🙂

5 Tools to Stop You Worrying

Why Do We Worry So?

When it comes to concerns about life’s uneasy or potentially disastrous situations, we start to worry.  I don’t think there is a single person in this world that hasn’t experienced a copious bout of the collywobbles in their lifetime — but why do we do this?

There could be a number of reasons, some being:

  • You feel you need to ‘prepare’ yourself for the worst
  • You are a ‘glass is half empty’ kind of person and just expect the worst to happen
  • It is in your experience that disaster always strikes, so worry is a necessary coping mechanism
  • There are so many things that could go wrong and you feel you need to focus on each one to embody it or try to find a possible solution for it in the event of it happening.

Now, if we actually look at this list from a transpersonal point of view — we take ourselves out of the equation and are impartial — these worries are not only a waste of precious manifesting time but they are a reinforcement of nonconstructive potential timelines.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU THINK

Just remember you bring about what you think about the most.  This is not meant to scare you, it’s a preparation tool so that you can steer your thoughts to more positive neurological pathways.  When you reinforce encouraging situations in your mind, as opposed to harmful scenarios (aka worrying), you are creating potential for a more fruitful future.

Easier said than done?

Sure, but it is possible.

Answer this: Has worrying ever solved your problems anyway?

I’m going to take a stab in the dark and say ‘no’ it probably hasn’t, right?  So, what can you do now to alleviate any future concerns you have?

Eckhart Tolle has pointed out three memorable and straightforward options that you can apply here, either: remove yourself from the situation (in this case, remove the worry), change it (transmute the worrisome thought form), or accept it totally (surrender to any future possibility).  But let’s go into it a bit more:

Here are 5 simple techniques you can carry out when you find yourself in a state of worry:

1. Do Something

Swap worrying for doing. Can you actually do something about it now?  If the answer is yes, take those first steps and you will begin to lighten the load off your mind.  Even if it means writing the problem down.  Just getting it out of your head and onto paper can be a relief.  You can even then burn the paper or trash it symbolizing your new stance on worry.  Tell your troublesome thought who’s the boss! The best thing you can actually do is visualize what you DO want to happen — I can’t stress this enough.

2. Find a Solution

solutions quoteMap out a possible solution. Again, it’s always helpful to write it down so that your mind is free of it.  When you can look at some achievable solutions, you may gain a better perspective of how you can change or alter the course of your quandary. Remember to focus on the desired outcome.

3. Acceptance

If there is absolutely nothing you can do, then try acceptance of what is.  If you cannot change what is, you need to let it go and find peace within your situation. How has this situation affected your life? Is there any diamond you can mine from it? Hint: there usually always is a positive learning when you can train yourself to see something from an alternative perspective.

4. Meditate

Solutions will present themselves when we quiet the mind.  There is a wealth of information just waiting for you to tap into when you are in a meditative state.   Clearing your mind of what I like to call ‘mind-static’ (continuous loops of mind chatter — read related article: How to Stop the ‘Monkey Mind’ Phenomenon) will help you to excavate that pearl of truth and gain a lucid perspective. When you step out of the way — solutions can come in. Your higher self never gives you any challenge that you cannot conquer.

5. Positive Reinforcement

Remind yourself that what you think you attract. Do you want to attract more of what you are worrying about? If not, then switch to thinking about what you do want to manifest in your life and let all negative outcomes go — you don’t need them. Capeesh!

“Make sure your thinking is pointing you in the right direction to manifesting your ideal destination” 

The mind can be trained to think differently — you are 100% in control of your destiny.

SUBSCRIBE icon 1You have a choice to rewire your thought process to align with what you want to manifest — don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.  Don’t fall into the trap of being a ‘victim of circumstance’ — this state doesn’t really exist as you create everything and only you can give it the necessary potency.

Playing any kind of victim role is a disempowering stance that you should avoid at all costs.

You are the powerful creator of your reality and you are in the driver’s seat — where are you going?  Where do you want to go?  Wherever you see yourself in the future just remember, worrying never got anyone anywhere — so…

How to Stop the ‘Monkey Mind’ Phenomenon

You’ve heard of the monkey mind, right?

It’s the Buddhist term meaning a restless; unsettled; confused; inconstant; indecisive and somewhat uncontrollable state of mind. It’s when the ego thinks it’s in control and uses the mind (thoughts) as its conduit — a state most of us have found ourselves in from time to time (or, for some, all the time).

Monkey Business

Unfortunately, these ‘thoughts’ think they run the show (from the mind, which is running ape-shit — excuse the phrase but I had to). This impish-rogue, primate mind can only take you so far and no further. That’s why you can reach a stalemate in your life if you’re blocked from your higher states as the egoic mind is only a shadow of the higher mind — a pale and distorted reflection of sorts.

My penny just dropped about how I’ve been trying to manifest according to my unconscious (associated with beliefs), subconscious (associated with emotions) limiting beliefs.

Let me explain:

  1. I am more convinced than ever that reality is an illusion — a playground for our divine, little souls to run amok. Read related article: The Holographic Universe and The Illusion of Separation
  2. The only thing that is ‘real’ per se is our existence or oversoul/individual soul/higher self. Think of the SIMS game — you, the oversoul, are playing in virtual reality creating families, communities and playing with the concept of individuation, freedom of choice and ‘life’.
  3. Now this ‘higher mind’ is the one with the overview (not the monkey mind or egoic mind — it can’t see further than your nose). Think of the higher self as the one cosmic dementia quotestanding on top of a skyscraper looking out on the city below — it can see all the streets and happenings taking place. Think of you, the part of the self in physical matter, as being on the ground — you’re level of perception is looking down an avenue and only seeing what is directly before you. You are not getting the birds eye view of the higher self up there gazing upon all possibilities below. Say for example (and this is going to be a very primitive example but you’ll get the idea): you want a coffee. The monkey mind can smell coffee brewing but takes you on a wild goose chase all over the city thinking it can pin point the location. If you had asked the higher self, it could have told you to take a right and a left and…Starbucks. Headquarters (what I like to call the higher mind) can see the quickest route while monkey mind is still swinging from branch to branch.
  4. Let go of the monkey mind version of how you want your life to transpire and let in the guidance of the higher mind. The egoic mind can only create from past events. It has no idea of future infinite possibilities because it hasn’t been played out across the minds screen yet. That is why when you ask for something you shouldn’t try to conceive of how you’re going to get it — your job is only the asking or the ‘vision’ of what you want not how you’re going to manifest it. Only the higher mind can see the possibilities laid out before you. Have you ever manifested something by letting go of the control aspect? Did you find that you could never have dreamed it possible to show up in the way it did and were fascinated at all the signs and synchronicities (read related article: Why Synchronicity Can Change Your Life) that led you to said manifestation? That’s because your higher self has the overview and not the ego mind.
  5. When you let go and tap into your intuition, cultivating a bond between physical mind and higher mind, you will allow infinite possibilities and realities to flow through you without the resistance and persistence of the monkey mind getting in the way. The ego thinks it knows everything but it doesn’t, it is only necessary to keep you in physicality (as far as I can tell). This means that we need the ego to keep us on earth or we’d probably want to go back ‘home’ — you get my drift, right?
  6. So, let the higher mind pick out the destination (it knows what you came here to do, so let it do its job), you need to be open to receive the package via the physical mind and then interpret it through the physical experience. It’s really quite simple — law of least effort type stuff, savvy?

I recently applied this monkey mind vs. higheSUBSCRIBE icon 1r mind stuff to one of my life situations and had to laugh. I was trying to conceive the situation as ‘thus’ (via my chimp noodle) when the situation was ‘this’ (something completely different and couldn’t have possibly conceived through the ego mind until I let HQ speak up). Suffice it to say, I was WAY off course but things slipped into understanding when I got out of my own way.

So, how do you get out of the ego mind and step into the higher mind?

Easy! Have fun…lot’s of it!

The easiest way to a higher vibration (because that is where all the good shit is happening, my friend) is through joy, excitement, love and all the other delicious higher vibrational feelings. When you’re in a higher vibe, your soul can easily communicate ideas and thought packages to you.

‘Tis the season to be jolly — people all over the globe are dusting off the mistletoe, donning the lip-gloss and puckering up for the long line of friends and family just waiting to be welcomed inside cozy, fire-lit domiciles.

However, there is a darker side to the holidays (ho ho…eh? Bah humbug!).

Being within close proximity to certain near and dear ones — over vast periods of celebratory time — can lead to some harrowing gas-lighting, festering underlying issues (especially as we’ve just come out of Mercury Retrograde and may still be feeling its keen sting hampering our effective communique), compounding anxieties and stresses and — let’s face it — emotional outbursts.

Invariably, some wild and uncouth words could get slung about the Christmas dining table this year!

We’ve all probably experienced our fair share of family squabbling during holiday gatherings but how can you ride out the storm without having a huge blow-out before you’ve even got to sample that hot, steamy Christmas pudding?

Christmas Zen QuoteRemaining calm and peaceful at family reunions is no small feat — it requires a lot of awareness, internal reflection and non-reaction.

The button-pushers will always try to work their Christmas magic but you’re going to have a Santa sack full of antidotes. Below you’ll find zap-it-in-the-butt recipes to counteract disaster:

  1. Reign (deer) It In — if someone is working on your last nerve ask yourself if you really need to react and cause a potential argument.  Can you simply smile and walk away?  See if you can be the still presence and avoid a hot chestnut from slipping down your trousers.  It’s a great test to be non-reactive — can you pour ice over the coals this Christmas?  Sometimes, when I feel overwhelmed by chaotic vibes I go and take 5 in the bathroom — just sit and take 3 long deep breaths and restore your essential energy/chi/sanity/will-to-live. Walking away and creating space or a break in a quarrel can be the very thing neSUBSCRIBE icon 1eded to diffuse it.
  2. Root (beer) Yourself — ground yourself wherever possible.  Take deep breaths and root yourself into the present moment.  When you are quiet, calm and centered, you move into the space of still presence where you can become the observer and this can be a very illuminating place to be (read related article: How to Hold Your Equilibrium). You might even get some clarity on certain behavioral patterns in others which may lead to a better understanding. When we are being seduced to the dark side of arguments it’s better to keep shtum unless you have something incredibly significant to say — otherwise, you will only be adding fuel to the yule logs. Remember that most of what you say — in these heated situations — isn’t being heard because there is too much tumult around and ears tend to close whilst mouths tend to flap.  Being the still observer offers you a way to stay in control of your emotions and gauge what needs to be said, done or to identify if this is your cue to take a stroll around the garden or build a snowman.
  3. Spread Good Cheer(s) — we all love our family and friends, but if you find yourself in a situation where you truly cannot contribute anything but loving them unconditionally, then do just that and send them love. Remain calm and balanced and focus on the love you have for them. Build on that and project it towards them. Remove yourself from the room if needs be and then do it in privacy — even if it means locking yourself in that bathroom again for a few minutes to gather/center yourself. I guarantee you will have helped them more by doing this then by rising to the bait of drama and argumentative behavior.

7 Things Every Teenager Should Know About Life

I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.~Douglas Adams

Don’t you sometimes wish you could hijack the DeLorean from ‘Back to the Future’ and go back in time to give the younger you some meaningful and helpful lessons in life (never mind a sharp upper cuff)?

Well, you’re here now — older and wiser with experience under your belt — and the pipeline dream of procuring time machines probably just isn’t going to happen.

The brighter side is that we can enlighten future generations of the deeper meanings behind some really profound truths.

Here’s a list of things I wish I knew when I was a little know-it-all:

1. Thoughts Create Things

7 things teenagers should know PINYes, if only I knew about the Law of Attraction at 16 years of age — all the mischief I could have wrought. Well, maybe it was for the best.  Seriously though, how cool would it have been to know — back then — that your thoughts are prerequisite to actually manifesting whatever you want in your life!?!

2. You Can Do or Be Anything

Yup, some of you may have had hippie parents telling you this but for some of us it just wasn’t the case.  You needed good grades and to get a job that pays well — you know, the 9-5 job and the white picket fence deal?

My parents, God bless them, probably were only handing down what they believed to be precious information that they had learned from their parents. ‘Get a steady job that pays the bills, there is no money to be made in mucking about with paint or playing the guitar’.  Oh, how wrong they were!  The sky is the limit with your dreams — go for it, guns blazing into the setting sun shouting ‘Yeehaw!’.

3. You Always have a Choice

Responsible Choices QuoteLife is all about choices, we make them to get in and out of trouble (scrap trouble — challenges is a better word).  You never set yourself up with anything you can’t get yourself out of — within reason, of course.  So, a message for mini-me would have been:  Try to view things from a different perspective, there is always a solution to a problem if you are quiet enough to hear the inner wisdom that is always inherent.  Life doesn’t just randomly happen to you if you take responsibility for your choices.

4. To Forgive is Divine

If only I had known back then that to hold a grudge means extra baggage for you.  This can even, in some cases, manifest as physical weight. Forgiving, contrary to the saying, doesn’t always mean you forget — if the lesson taught you anything, don’t make yourself vulnerable or open to certain situations again. Always be mindful of your lessons but learn how to forgive and walk away too.

5. Taking Things Personally is Disempowering

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and tastes but there is no ‘blanket’ rule over what is the truth as there are almost 8 billion different perspectives on earth right now.

I was told, in my younger years, not to listen to peoples opinions of me, especially if they caused me any distress. I didn’t truly get that when I am insulted I am actually agreeing with what has been flung on my doorstep.  If only I learned to dodge those landmines sooner, I would have a lot less BS to scrape off my boots later on down the line!

6. Conforming is Boring

SUBSCRIBE icon 1I wish I could seriously implant this into the brains of the youth of today, it’s just that important — especially with the crap that’s being pumped at them through social media!  Don’t try to be who you are not (and please don’t try to mimic a Kardashian).  Everyone wants an original not a copy.  Duh!  Thinking out of the box is not even an option — burn the box!  No more boxes, boxes are for things not ideas or people (just ask Schrodinger’s cat).

7. Being Weird is just so Damn Cool

Well, this one just flows so nicely from being a non-conformist.  It’s just completely stimulating being different.  I mean, come on, look at all those Barbie’s and Ken’s out there — yeah, it’s a nice bit of eye-candy, but really?  For real?

Nah, I prefer someone with a bit more kick, vooma and soul — even if the facial features are slightly askew, hell, isn’t that what makes people intriguing?  Give me a David Bowie or a Thom Yorke any day — talent is my sexiness barometer.

So, little Cherie from the past, this is what I would have loved to have been able to time travel to tell you about.

I’m going to try and make this as straight forward as possible. Lately I’ve been playing with the idea that we’re in a construct reality or a ‘matrix’.

It’s been an astonishing revelation as synchronicities and instant messages have come pouring through the cracks.

I’ve always had a great deal of ‘bread crumbs’ from the unseen realm since I began my journey but when I got the proof that I asked for that we are living in a slightly different ‘reality’ (or should I say illusion) than I expected, these memo’s from what I like to call Head Quarters — or ‘HQ’ for short (aka your higher self) — came in thick and fast.

Just for example: I was reading from a book — and had just happened to ask HQ a question — when the radio talk show I was listening to started speaking the very words out of the book I was reading. Mind = blown. It had answered my question perfectly.

Stranger Things…

Once you get your head around the matrix stuff, it’s actually quite liberating. It means you ‘exit’ the autopilot form of plodding along in ‘reality/illusion’ and YOU get to call the shots — or rewrite the program. Something akin to lucid dreaming in the ‘real’ world.

So, how do you do this?

It couldn’t be easier!

I can only speak from my personal experience (obviously) and what I do is literally have a conversation with HQ. You can ask for xyz and wait patiently for your bread crumbs to appear. In some cases, the whole loaf will plop into your lap buttered and all.

I’ve tried it, tested it, prodded the technique and have had some startlingly speedy results.

Don’t forget that the analogy for your HQ or higher self is that ‘it’ is on top of a skyscraper looking down on all the avenues of possibility, you (in corporeal experience) are on the ground level looking dead-ahead. If you want to know the quickest route to a specific destination — check in with the control tower (HQ).

The most important things to remember are:

  1. Get clear about what you truly want.
  2. Get yourself a pendulum (Pendulums 101 – What, How, Where and Why) so you can get a quick no/yes/maybe answer.
  3. I use my pendulum (dowsing is you communing with HQ or your higher self) to check that what I want is something in alignment with what HQ wants (remember: you are here with a ‘blueprint’ or ‘mission’ so if what you’re trying to acquire is not congruent with that assignment, you’re going to hit a wall). Most of the time, I am in alignment with my pre-chosen path. However, I have occasionally experienced straying off the yellow brick road to pursue something that looks shiny and wonderful that’s turned out to be a dead-end pursuit — shit happens, but you can easily avoid these pit-falls if you trust your innate wisdom or just completely trust that the Universe has your back (or dowse for the answer).
  4. SUBSCRIBE icon 1If you do ‘want’ something that is not in alignment with HQ, let it go. You haven’t got time to waste on going in circles and it’s probably something your ego is holding onto. If you detach, you will re-enter the cosmic slipstream — remember that when you want to cling onto outworn dreams.
  5. The last but not least thing is — drum-roll — you have to believe 100% that HQ is there and listening. Sorry, but there’s nothing that kills your communique than doubt. If you doubt, then your wish is granted and you’ll get something to doubt about (I’m a poet and I sure know it). It sucks but that’s how it is and you’ll soon get the hang of it. I was teetering on being somewhere between 75%-80% believing that we are in a matrix/construct program — then, through a series of personal revelations — I went sailing to 100% believability That’s when things REALLY changed for me — instant manifestation 101!!! Just remember to check in at no.1 again. Be sure of what you want, it’s kind of important.
  6. If you doubt, ask for confirmation. That’s how I got to 100% believability. Prepare yourself for a deep rabbit-hole, red-pill experience — it’s trippy stuff.

How to Avoid Misunderstanding Forgiveness

To Forgive is Divine

“We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies.” ~Martin Luther King, Jr. 

The topic of forgiveness harbors much resistance in some — it’s a touchy subject to say the least. The biggest misunderstanding — in the act of forgiveness — is to think that you are condoning the action, whatever it may be.

Forgiveness is actually letting go of the act not necessarily forgetting it (you may need to remember the experience later on in life so as not to be burnt again).

In letting go of the action taken against you, you free yourself from it from this moment on — you no longer carry the weight. You lighten yourself of the burden of holding onto it and give yourself permission to start anew.

Looking Deeper

This doesn’t mean that you have to be bosom-buddies with the perpetrator (you may choose to cut them out of your life completely, which may be completely appropriate in your given circumstance) nor does it mean that you indemnify their actions — it simply means you have compassion for the person. You have empathized enough to have understanding as to why the action took place.

An example would be that an abuser may have been abused — this will be your chance to step into the shoes of the ‘villain’ (who was the ‘victim’) and to see the course of events that lead to the ‘act’. You may grapple with the fact that some abuse victims don’t ever become abusers — that abusers choose their course of action. This is true — our lives revolve around choice. However, the course of action (in the case of the incident having already taken place) is set and all you can do is have compassion for the individual who, should we say, strayed from the path. When you can do this, it is easier to practice forgiveness.

Forgiveness = compassion and understanding.

Forgiveness does not mean condoning or forcing yourself to see the person as ‘innocent’ or the actions carried out as okay.

Prayer: Where Did it All Go Wrong?

Whether you are someone who never skips prayer time, a ‘once in a blue moon’ beseecher or an affirmation junkie — there’s something you need to know about the different modalities of prayer and the one action that actually makes it work…

A Wooly Topic

image015I was watching Gregg Braden’s, ‘The Science of Miracles’(if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend you do), and a couple of pennies dropped. The revelation had to do with the way we — in the western world — are taught or believe we should pray. It’s all wrong!

“The feeling IS the prayer, not anything you incant on a loop.”

I was raised a Roman Catholic and, at an early age, already developed a big problem with the system of ritualistic recitals of verses and prayer during mass. I would witness the older folk getting up to perform a stanza, then sit down…then get up to incant something else, then sit down, then kneel, then up again, kneel again, sit — rinse, wash and repeat. I was so confused!

In my experience, there was no feeling (and very little understanding) infused into what was being said. I would look at these grown-ups intoning the words from their handbooks and they reminded me of robots — or to coin a rather poignant modern phrase: sheeple (no wonder the congregation is referred to as ‘the flock’ and Jesus is ‘the Shepherd’).

The only feeling I ever got going to church was utter boredom — sorry, but it’s the truth. Suffice it to say, Roman Catholicism wasn’t my bag and the church and I parted ways — I’m the black sheep, baby!

Humour aside, I’m not out to bash religion nor to offend anyone — my philosophy is ‘each to their own’ — I just want to emphasize the importance of the feeling part of prayer which is the true essence of the motion.

Feel it to Reel it

In ‘The Science of Miracles’, Gregg Braden says that when we pray in western culture, we are usually asking for something — ‘let there be peace in the world’, ‘I’m begging you to let me make my bills this month!’, ‘please heal my sick mother and I promise I’ll visit her more often’. The very asking or praying for something implies that you do not have it. Ping! Praying for something that is not in your life is sending out feelings of lack. I often hear questions like this: ‘But I don’t have it in my life, how can I lie and make believe it is there?

It’s really quite simple. This cause and effect universe works on vibration, energy and frequency — so what you put out is what you’ll get back. Feel lack and you’ll bring in more lack. Pray for something that you clearly see you are not experiencing and more ‘not experiencing it’ will be yours. With all the Law of Attraction teachings, we are told that we need to feel as if what we want is already ours. You’re not kidding yourself, or ‘lying’ to yourself when you change your frequency to feeling the said manifestation. You are merely aligning to the assigned emotion to bring it in.

All it takes is a tweak. Tweak your emotional dial to feeling that what you ask for is already present in your NOW moment and you’re feeling will be reeling it in. In fact, you won’t even need to bring it from the ‘outside’ to your ‘inside’. If you can feel it on the inside, it is yours — you may only need a couple of dimension shifts to actually see it in your reality but know it’s there and those preferred dimensions will be aligning themselves to you pronto! Patience, in this case, is certainly a virtue worth practicing.

Gregg Braden recounts a story of a friend who wanted to pray for rain in his village. He didn’t recite any drawn out invocations — he simply felt the feeling of what it was like to have squishy mud between his toes and the smell of the village after a heavy rainfall. And, voila, the rains came down and the floods came up only a few days later.

Come on Capetonians, get your Noah on!

Oh, What a Feeling!

The feeling IS the prayer, not anything you say on a loop. If repetition gets you to the feeling, then great — but always remember it’s the feeling of having what you want and not how many mindless ‘hail Mary’s’ you do (*confession flashback*).

Want peace in the world? See soldiers putting their weapons down, children safely playing in the street, people shaking hands and hugging each other, smell the fragrance of flowers being passed about and feel the dust being kicked up as the masses dance for joy. Feel the relief, feel the love, feel the celebration.

Want more money? See the cheque deposit in your bank, smell the grotty but welcome odour of the notes — fan yourself with those wads of cash, see what you’re going to do with all that money: see yourself boarding that plane or buying all those beautiful plants for your garden, smell the roses (yes, literally!). Feel the freedom, feel the contentment, feel the gratitude.

The simplicity of pray is to invoke a feeling — to feel its existence already clear and present in your life. It’s fun, especially if you can turn it into a game that you play daily. If you can brush your teeth twice a day, you can take time out to pray once a day.

Hang Ten

Here’s how I pray: I get comfortable on my couch and put my feet up. I take three deep breaths. I set my phone timer for 10 minutes and I go into a deep meditation. I get utterly absorbed in a daydream about what I want and how it feels to have it (let your imagination run riot!). I give oodles of gratitude throughout.

You won’t believe how quickly those 10 minutes fly by and it always ends with me having a massive, beaming smile on my face coupled with feelings of blissful elation that last well into the day.

No-one likes boring ritual or any kind of rigid task, so make your daily prayer/visualization time pleasurable — something to look forward to. There’s nothing more important than making time for this, it’s your future investment.

Quirky New Designs: Putting Pets to Good Use

Fur and Feathers

My hubby and I recently adopted a new kitty, Tilly. She had 24 hours before she was going to be put down (yikes!).

We never looked back.

She’s adorable, playful and just a breath of fresh (albeit energetic) air. She looks like she could be our other cats (Purdy) sister as they are both tortoiseshells. Adorbs!!! I find a wealth of inspiration watching these two interact.

Then there are our wild birds…we live out in the sticks of the klein Karoo, South Africa, and we have Cat Christmas Card 1a huge garden full of flocks of different birds demanding feeding morning and night.

We love animals and the great outdoors, so this is all just peachy keen for us. But tuna and sunflower seeds don’t come cheap…

I recently acquired a tablet (with digipen) for my birthday and have come up with some funky designs. I’ve just launched some fabulous products (just in time for some early Christmas shopping too! lol). Let me start off by showing you my Cat Christmas Cards (to the right and below)…Cat Xmas Card

3 Ways to Tap Into the Matrix of All Possibility

The Matrix of all Possibility

I came across the above quote on my Facebook feed this morning. It was a well-timed synchronicity as it’s a concept I’ve been mulling over the past few days.

My ruminating was about music and the impact it has on our lives. Many musicians claim that they literally pluck songs out of the ether. I know this to be true as my husband is a musician and some of his greatest songs — he told me — were ‘given’ to him by, what Gregg Braden referred to as, the Divine Matrix (in his book of the same title).

The Cosmic Menu

Ideas, music, inventions, art — all these things have been known to come to creatives whilst meditating, dreaming or daydreaming. 3 really important ways of tapping into this field of potentiality is to:

  1. Meditate — surrender all thinking and let your mind take a break. See what comes up in the space between your thoughts (hint: that’s where the magic lies!).
  2. Daydream — children do it all the time and they have some pretty inventive ideas (and the most fun too)! Get into the habit of letting yourself daydream every day. Let your mind wander and see what emerges.
  3. Dream Journaling — try to make a habit of writing down your nightly sojourns in the outer realms — there could be a treasure trove of insights in there for you if you train yourself to remember your dreams. You can even declare/ask that you want to have direction/inspiration in your dreams before you turn in for the night.

Tapping into the ‘matrix’ in this way also begs the question: Is anything ever original? Yes and no.

If everything is in the ‘ether’ already (or the Mind of God or whatever other phrase rocks your boat) then nothing is original but what is original is you and your take on it.

You’re a ‘one of a kind’ — as unique as your fingerprints. So when the ‘quantum muse in the sky’ selects you to manifest a creative package, you will channel the information through your unique experiences/soul/spirit and give the world a truly unoriginal original 🙂

Of course, there are many musicians (or people who call themselves such) who channel nothing of the sort. This goes for any genre really — there are a few artistic duds coming directly from the ego and being controlled by the head not the heart.

Goodbye 2016! We Rocked You Out…

Last year (2016) was — numerologically (gawd…that was a tongue twister! Does that word even exist? It does now) speaking — a year of cyclical endings (2+0+1+6=9 and 9 is a number of completion). So, it was befitting that my Rocking Art Series was to finally be exhibited in all its glory!

The event took place on the 23rd December at the funky Karoo Art Hotel and we all had a blast!

A big THANK YOU to my gorgeous, Templeton, for agreeing to do the aftershow with me — we rocked out to a song from each artist in the exhibition (unfortunately no video footage was taken but see the photo’s at the end).

The list was a tall order to fill but we somehow made it through and played to a packed-like-sardines audience.

There are simple yet effective habits that free-thinking, progressive people adopt to raise their vibration and stay in a place of joy, creativity, serenity and love. If you’re feeling lost or disconnected from your life purpose, passion and spirit, then Cherie Roe Dirksen may have some helpful tips to keep you pointed in the right direction as well as being an inspiration to others:

The Many Distractions of Modern Day Life

Many of us mere mortals find it difficult to keep our motivation in a constant, healthy flow — sometimes our muse takes a vacation to Ibiza and leaves us holding the fort back home without ink in our wells or paint in our palettes (or Chardonnay in our fridges).

It also doesn’t help when life throws constant distractions our way — the good, the bad and the downright despicable.

We tend to fall into the trap of circumnavigating what’s really important in lieu of catching that new mini series that everyone’s been talking about — and being sucked in for a season or six — or endlessly perusing sites and social media in an attempt to get nowhere in a slow and time-consuming manner.

Time is precious, use it shrewdly.

What does it take to be inspired?

If you feel like you’ve lost the plot and your inspiration levels have ground down to zero then there is a solar powered light at the end of your tunnel. There is great wisdom to be gleaned in the enlightened words of Lao Tzu who penned:

In dwelling, live close to the ground. In thinking, keep to the simple. In conflict, be fair and generous. In governing, don’t try to control. In work, do what you enjoy. In family life, be completely present.

Let’s take a look at the ways you can bring this concept into your life. You too can stay grounded and connected to source and that infinite supply of inspiration by:

  1. Feeling Your Spirit — when you tap into your innate, you’ll find the peace that dwells within. Engaging in that peace (through meditation, breath-work, yoga, prayer, being in nature, etc.) will bring about more and more harmony. Being in this space not only brings you closer to Source but it’s the breeding ground where all bodacious types of magic and inspiration are born.
  2. Paying Close Attention to the Natural World — when we ‘live close to the ground’ we engage and interact with Gaia — the spirit of this physical world we were born into. When we literally get dirty and immerse our feet in the soil, breathe in the sweet and fruity fragrance of the spring blossoms, dip our hands into a cool brook, study the busy activities of the birds up above and contemplate the majesty of a delicate flower — we step into awe and wonder at a system we cannot fully comprehend but are full of respect for. Paying very close attention to the natural kingdom can show us meaning and understanding in our own personal struggles. Become more aware when you are outdoors — look, listen, learn and drink in the beauty that surrounds and wants to interact with you.
  3. Seeing Divinity Everywhere and in Everything — it’s easy to forget that Source is omnipotent. When you remind yourself and experience the verity that the God-force is in every living thing, you can begin to shift your perspective to align with gratitude. Source is ready to commune with you — are you willing to receive the blessing?
  4. Aligning Your Thoughts with Spirit — our thoughts can steer us in the right or wrong direction. Don’t forget to check in with your innate, on occasion, to monitor if your feelings or gut instincts are in vibrational alignment with your spirit. If you’re veering onto a path that feels wrong, you can always change your destination by choosing new thoughts.

Change: One Thing You Can Rely On and Use to Your Advantage

You guessed it, the only constant thing is this mortal coil is change. It’s the definitive dichotomy of our existence.

Now — seeing it’s the only thing you most certainly CAN rely on — let’s look at how we can use change to our benefit:

“If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” — Wayne Dyer

1. Perspective

When the earth around you shakes, the only thing you can do to keep your head above water is to adapt. When you allow yourself to see change as a prelude to something greater, you can learn how to cope with it more easily.

Changing the way you look at something will ultimately give you a bigger picture and more coping skills. Staying stuck in rigidity will only make you less flexible and fearful.

“Without a struggle, there can be no progress.”  — Frederick Douglass

2. Progress

When the earth was terraforming, it must have been an awesome sight to behold. Continents shifting, mountains being pushed up from the depths of the ocean and molten lava spewing out of the earths core to create new land. It must have been sheer chaos but without the changes the earth experienced, we would not have the beautiful planet we experience today.

Sometimes things seem harsh but, in the long run, can be leading to a more exquisite conclusion — something you couldn’t have expected in your dizziest daydreams.

Exercise your mind to embrace reformation and to expect the world around you to keep evolving to an even better state of existence than what you are experiencing now. When you do this, you are always laying seeds for a positive outcome.

“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” — George Bernard Shaw

And, finally:

 “The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.” — Alan Watts

3. Prepare

Play with reshaping your environment — gracefully accept the dance and move with redirective flow. You can take small steps today to train yourself in accepting change such as:

  • Rearrange your home decor periodically,
  • experiment with your wardrobe,
  • shuffle things about on your office desk,
  • plan a new jogging route,
  • attempt a new zesty meal plan for the week or test out a different restaurant,
  • try something new this weekend instead of doing the same old same old — inject change into your daily life and break up stringent regimes.

The human race is fixated on routine and stability and, although those qualities sometimes have their place, we could do with learning to accept and even instigate transformation once in a while to build that flexibility muscle.

Be the master of change and see how life becomes easier and more joyful.

Loving the Alien

My earliest memory of the legendary David Robert Jones was when my mother bought a record of his and I saw the cover (I think it was ‘Space Oddity’). I was 9 years old and fell madly in love with this androgynous, mysterious, beautiful, outrageous looking creature.

He was the poetic and rebellious inspiration I needed in my teens and I never outgrew his innovative and ground-breaking style of music. He inspired me to write, to be a musician and to be insanely weird…and proud of it.

Under Pressure

I have been practicing madly this week for a David Bowie tribute concert that I have agreed to do (I play the bass guitar) next Saturday in Cape Town. Within a couple of weeks of the show being announced it was sold out — a real testament to the popularity of this British musical icon even in the Southern most tip of Africa!

I had the privilege of seeing him live in action at Wembley Stadium, London, when he was on his ‘Reality’ tour. He was well into his 60’s at the time but his performance was monumental — an evening I shall never forget.

Rehearsing for this gig has given me a new-found respect for Mr. Bowie as his songs are some of the most complicated and difficult I’ve ever attempted. But what speaks to the soul must be pursued.

So, having Bowie on my mind — I’d like to share some zany quotes from the Thin White Duke:

  1. “I’m in awe of the universe, but I don’t necessarily believe there’s an intelligence or agent behind it. I do have a passion for the visual in religious rituals, though, even though they may be completely empty and bereft of substance. The incense is powerful and provocative, whether Buddhist or Catholic.”
  2. “I always had a repulsive need to be something more than human. I felt very puny as a human. I thought, ‘F*ck that. I want to be a superhuman.”
  3. “I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring.”
  4. “On the other hand, what I like my music to do to me is awaken the ghosts inside of me. Not the demons, you understand, but the ghosts.”
  5. “Don’t you love the Oxford Dictionary? When I first read it, I thought it was a really really long poem about everything.”

I’ve got a library that I keep the ones I really really like.   9. When asked what the quality you most like in a man? “The ability to return books.”
  10. “You can neither win nor lose if you don’t run the race.”

Okay, no. 8 and 9 aren’t exactly THAT spiritual but I liked them anyway. Anyone with a fetish for reading and books would understand the hair-pulling anxiety of lending books.

I love no. 7 because we should all strive to please ourselves and stop trying to placate those around us forsaking our own needs and creativity. That should not be taken as a selfish thing but a self love thing. When you’re happy, you’re going to exude joy and that will affect all of those in your sphere.

Need a Constant Flow of Money? I’ve Got Something For You…

Oh boy, ABBA got it right — it is a rich man’s world!  Financial flow is a sticky and uncomfortable topic.  We all want a constant stream of income to live well, whatever your version of ‘well’ is.

“Money is only a tool. It will take you wherever you wish, but it will not replace you as the driver.” — Ayn Rand

Personally, I care not for Porches, Gucci handbags or Mansions — I want money to travel and enjoy the finer things in life (haute cuisine, theater and Belgian chocolate are more up my alley). But no matter what you want to do with your money, we all want that financial security at the end of the day because money brings choice — the spice of life!

Even better, we want to earn this money in a capacity that fulfills us. A show of hands from all the people who want to earn cold hard cash doing what they love!

So with that in mind, I knocked up this little visual money affirmation.  I hope it helps to shift your attitude or feelings towards money. Give it a try — you’ve got nothing to lose.

Doubting Thomas?

If you still have reservations as to the power of affirmations, I don’t blame you. I, too, struggled with just repeating phrases over and over in the hope that they would come true.

That kind of parrot fashion manifesting didn’t seem to strike a chord within me until I questioned:

  • all my inner dialogue — I got real about the thoughts I was projecting when I wasn’t in affirmation or meditation mode,
  • my feelings — were they in alignment with what I was saying or was there a tampering emotion emerging that needed to take a back seat? Aka — doing a wealth affirmation but feeling poor, and…
  • what was it I truly wanted — sometimes I would think I wanted something but probing further into my desire, there was an underlying reason for it. In other words — I wanted money only to realize I wanted to go on holiday or buy some new clothes, etc.

Turning Music into Art and Feeling

To recap on the last video blog (New Concepts: What Does a Bach Masterpiece Look and Feel Like? (Video Included)) CLICK HERE.

This week I tuned into another one of my all-time favourite composers, Claude Debussy.

The feelings that came up after listening to Debussy were:

  • Whimsy,
  • Magic,
  • Playfulness,
  • Fluidity and
  • Fun.

Sampling Tasty Meanings

Other words that describe ‘whimsical’ are fanciful, mischievous, fantastic, excitable, unusual, impulsive, curious, mercurial and ‘quicksilver’ (meaning ‘fluid’ — curious indeed as that is one of the words that came up whilst doodling to the music!), changeable, unpredictable and kaleidoscopic (what an awesome word!).

Don’t you just love the tone and feel of those words?

It tends to transport one to childhood — those days spent in the sun, exploring the garden and being in awe over the smallest ant to the splendiferous veins of a leaf.

It’s little wonder that the drawing that transpired whilst listening to Debussy was a tree and garden (the whole start to finish process video is below).

The Importance of Play

subcribe buttonThe overall effect I got from the enchanting sounds of Debussy was expressing the fun aspect of the self — the inner child.

How can we tap into our neglected mini me?

Try incorporate more:

  • Time in nature — go for walks, swim in streams, run barefoot in the sand, hike, climb mountains, get creative in the garden.
  • Be playful — dance like no-ones watching, play board-games, build sandcastles on the beach or mud-pies in the garden after a good downfall! Get your hands dirty and put being an adult on the back-burner.
  • Laugh more — have a good belly wobble as often as you can EVERY day.
  • Be creative — make things, experiment, colour in, let the inner artiste loose!
  • Be curious — don’t think you know everything. Study new things, take courses, try more classes. Never give up on the wonder of the world.
  • Listen to Debussy! — apparently he helps with drawing out all of the above! 😉

New Concepts: What Does a Bach Masterpiece Look and Feel Like? (Video Included)

Channeling Music into Emotive Art

Before I launch into my Bach revelation, I want to give you a little bit of background about where I’m coming from: I embarked on an auditory and visual journey in 2012. I decided to try to combine my love for music with art and subliminally paint to inspiring composers/musicians to see what would emerge onto my canvas.

I wanted to explore this realm of sound and discover why some of us are drawn to certain types of music.

I’d enter a meditative state — trying to blank out my mind with no preconceived ideas — put on the music and let it rip! What transpired since then has morphed into one of the most exciting, mind-bending trips of my life — my Rock Art Series!

 You can take a peek at that HERE (each painting in the series — so far — has a start to finish photographic journal along with a written account of the emotions that arose whilst listening and painting to the music).

In a nutshell, the Rock Art Series was a project I started to probe the bands and musicians who made a huge impact on me — even from childhood. I started off my early life in a rock band as a bass guitarist and was hugely influenced by 70’s rock and the 90’s grunge period. But why?

  • Why was I drawn to their music?
  • Was there more to their music that met the ear?
  • Why did it seem to resonate with me and a handful of peeps but did not seem to impress others?

I set out to do 10 paintings (one for every band/artist). I am currently on painting no. 9 and am still as captivated by this process as the day I started the first painting.

Now, I want to take it a step further…

Air on a Heart (G) String

I want to mine the sacred sound field of classical music. There must be a plethora of hidden meanings and deeper understandings waiting to be excavated in just this one specific genre.

I started this new project off to ‘Air on a G String‘ by Bach. It was the first piece that sprang to mind as it literally creeps into my heart and starts tugging on my tear strings!

What a Feeling!

Below, you will find a video where I talk about what came up for me in this classical masterpiece AND I whip out my whiteboard and draw for you — live — to the music (okay, I’ve sped it up a little cause it took me almost an hour to complete and I thought you wouldn’t want to sit through that whole process! It’s now a neat and tidy 1:30 minutes…very palatable, darling) 😉

I have posted the end result picture beneath the video for you to download and splash with your creative genius — so dust off those coloring in pencils, crayons and pens (or just go and steal them from your kids room) and let that inner child out to play! Pop on some Bach and see what emotions arise in you (don’t forget to leave your comments in the box below).

  • Remembrance
  • Divine connection
  • Divine Flow
  • We are all connected
  • Sorrow of seeming ‘separation’
  • Joy — ‘all is well’

3 Ways to Tap Into the Matrix of All Possibility

I came across the above quote on my Facebook feed this morning. It was a well-timed synchronicity as it’s a concept I’ve been mulling over the past few days.

My ruminating was about music and the impact it has on our lives. Many musicians claim that they literally pluck songs out of the ether. I know this to be true as my husband is a musician and some of his greatest songs — he told me — were ‘given’ to him by, what Gregg Braden referred to as, the ‘Divine Matrix‘ (in his book of the same title).

The Cosmic Menu

Ideas, music, inventions, art — all these things have been known to come to creatives whilst meditating, dreaming or daydreaming. 3 really important ways of tapping into this field of potentiality is to:

  1. Meditate — surrender all thinking and let your mind take a break. See what comes up in the space between your thoughts (hint: that’s where the magic lies!).
  2. Daydream — children do it all the time and they have some pretty inventive ideas (and the most fun too)! Get into the habit of letting yourself daydream every day. Let your mind wander and see what emerges.
  3. Dream Journaling — try to make a habit of writing down your nightly sojourns in the outer realms — there could be a treasure trove of insights in there for you if you train yourself to remember your dreams. You can even declare/ask that you want to have direction/inspiration in your dreams before you turn in for the night.

Tapping into the ‘matrix’ in this way also begs the question: Is anything ever original? Yes and no.

If everything is in the ‘ether’ already (or the Mind of God or whatever other phrase rocks your boat) then nothing is original but what is original is you and your take on it.

You’re a ‘one of a kind’ — as unique as your fingerprints. So when the ‘quantum muse in the sky’ selects you to manifest a creative package, you will channel the information through your unique experiences/soul/spirit and give the world a truly unoriginal original 🙂

Of course, there are many musicians (or people who call themselves such) who channel nothing of the sort. This goes for any genre really — there are a few artistic duds coming directly from the ego and being controlled by the head not the heart.

Finished AD 2I’m going to be exploring, in up and coming articles, the realm of music and art. I’ll dive into just what compels us to seek out beauty.

7 Ways You Can Conquer Stress

Stewing in Your Juices

I’m normally quite a chilled person. Nothing phases me. Until…

  • I take on too much work
  • I get into my ‘yes’ mode and make arrangements and dates that clog my diary
  • I volunteer my services willy-nilly
  • My housework starts to mount
  • My ‘to do’ list grows around the garden (especially as I’m trying to do the whole sustainability thing)
  • I have awesome ideas but have to implement them (adding to the head clutter and time/schedule disaster)

I’m sure you can probably relate to most of the above. Then what happens is that chilled out person who thought they could take on the world in a heart beat starts to panic.

The Signs of a Meltdown

The walls of my diary close in and anxiety starts to rear its ugly head.

  • Panic attacks
  • Sweaty palms
  • Emotional outbursts (usually involving tears)
  • Temper whirlwinds
  • Depression
  • Feeling defeated and impotent
  • Losing it over the smallest things

We can experience the above on a smaller or larger scale, depending on the level of anxiety and what looms ahead.

Okay, so what can be done?

Anxiety Be Gone!

Well, I’m trying to give myself a well-deserved pep talk here ’cause I suddenly realized the other day that I was slipping off the cliff of the ‘work’ I had piled up.

Amid my darkest moment, I came to the conclusion that it was going to be done whether I fretted about it or not. And what couldn’t be done was just not going to be done. It’s really quite simple.

So, on a practical level, try to:

  1. Get what’s in your head down onto paper (this works a treat!)
  2. Now you can make a priority list
  3. Schedule your time wisely and you’ll find you can fit a lot into your day
  4. Don’t stress about how much you’ve got to do by getting tangled up in the future tasks — concentrate on the task at hand
  5. Read no. 4 again.
  6. Yip…read no. 4 and 5 again!
  7. As Yoda said, ‘Do or do not’ — in this context, do what you must do and stop whinging about it. Have you ever stopped to think how much time we waste worrying or bitching about what we have to do instead of doing it?

Example: I have a mountain of clothes to pack away. Every morning I get up and look at this mountain and feel despair. It affects me greatly. I don’t like a messy bedroom — that’s where I’m supposed to go to relax, not stare at a heap of rags.

What not to do: Whine about the job. Look at the heap in deflated impotence. Complain about how much other stuff you have to do. Sit and have a cup of coffee and catch up on your Facebook feed. Or, in my case, write a blog about it, whilst — out of the corner of my eye — I can see into my bedroom and the washing pile is staring happily back at me.

Solution: Do it. A 5 minute rant could have you half way done by now. You can have that cuppa AND pack the washing away (what a novel idea!).

There is actually plenty of time in a day when you use it wisely. The above example is small fish compared to some of the whoppers we have to face in life and prepare for. However, inevitably, we are remarkable creatures with an ability to squeeze a lot into our lives when our minds are prepared well enough.

Let’s go back to no. 4, 5 and 6 of the tips list. This tip has helped me exponentially over the past few days. I’m a Virgo and a control freak. When my schedule starts mounting up and I feel like I’m losing control — it’s a blood bath! I have the tendency of looking ahead at what I have to do tomorrow, the next day and so on into infinity. This makes matters worse.

All we have to concentrate on is what lays before us today. You can deal with tomorrow, well, tomorrow! If it’s really a pickle, then set aside 10-15 minutes of today to work out a game-plan for tomorrow so you can at least get some sleep.

If there is ever something to remember about anxiety it’s this: one step at a time! You’re amazing and you’ll do it all, only if you tackle what’s in front of you now. As my dear mother used to say, ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’.

Creeping in Through the Cracks

Fear is a mighty strong emotion. It could be said to be the driving force behind our collective impotence.

Why does it have so much force in our lives?

It get’s flung at us constantly via the media — TV, movies, adverts, the general public, etc.

And when we’re not ‘out in the world’ overhearing all the crime statistics and getting fed bad news from people on the street, we rush home to fall into the escapism of our daily Facebook feed because there’s nothing there to be fearful of, right?

Wrong! We get a slipstream of everything that’s messed up in the world (barring, of course, those sweet little kitty meme’s and quirky quote feeds — although even those are starting to take their toll on social media addicts).

One has even come to fear the next ‘Be Like Bob’ post or cradle in terror at the thought of another cat in a pot photo. All jokes aside…

Getting Down and Dirty

We need to take responsibility for what we give our attention to and for how we allow, yes allow, the media to manipulate our emotions and pervade the airwaves with such repugnant negativity.

We are the ones giving credence to and creating our own fears — we can literally asphyxiate ourselves with things to fret or find fear about.

Every time you give into fear you feed negativity and give it more power. Fear is a choice, like it or not.

The Different Types of Fear

There are, of course, many different types of fear but they are all grounded in the act of giving your power away.

When we come up against fear, we are presented with a chance to be aware, brave and face up to it.  Get to the nitty-gritty and uncover the truth about why we are so afraid or uncomfortable (i.e. the fear of heights/snakes/natural disasters/terrorism/clowns/Uncle Sam/Aunt Betty/’fill in the blank’).

When we mine ourselves for the ‘why’s’ and ‘what-have-you’s’ of our own fears, we can face them and move through them.

If there is nothing we can do but send our love, compassion, empathy or prayers to a fearful situation, then do that! Stop giving rise to a tidal wave of negative emotions.

Either do something about your fear (fight or flight), make an effort to get to the bottom of why you feel a certain way (be it through meditation, inner-examination, therapy, etc) or stop thinking about it — turn your thoughts around!

What you think about you bring about — your attention, good or bad — always feeds the probability giving it more gusto. So stop gusting away at those fearful ruminations!

Incapacitating Fear

In order to work fear back into the light, we need to find its polar opposite — LOVE.  When you inject love into fear it evaporates — it has no stronghold in the presence of love.

But how does one start projecting love when ones knees are knocking?

Well, let’s address what is called heart-centered living — I’m sure you’ve all probably heard that word by now.  People are throwing it about a lot these days (including me — guilty as charged!). As airy-fairy and lace-clad as heart-centered living may seem — there is a nugget of gold in the finding!

Quickening the Heart

When you work through your heart, based primarily upon how you are feeling about something (as opposed to working through your mind and how you think about something), you are guided by a more truthful resonance of picking up subtle nuances from your surroundings rather than being directed by what reason dictates.

So even though we are in need of our minds and pensiveness, we have been dominated by left-brain thinking for centuries.  A shift is occurring, not to totally disregard our thoughts but to channel through the heart and then process through the mind.  In other words, not just to go straight to the head and bypass our hearts or how we are feeling intuitively.

Rationality can be useful but it has, in some cases, left our instinctive abilities to wither in its stoic presence.  Sometimes our ‘logic’ has actually hindered our bliss. This could be because ‘society dictates otherwise’ or ‘the norm is to be…’  — well, be careful of whose ‘norm’ you are conceding to.

It’s that age old conflict between science and spirituality (left-brain versus right-brain) — the solution to which is using both in balance.

3 Key factors to transmute fear are remembering to:

1. Spend Your Emotions Wisely 

Don’t buy into fear.  Think of all the things you have feared in the past — did any of those worries come true?  If yes, did you survive it?  I take it you did if you are reading this.  The energy or vibration of fear draws that which you worry about into your life.  Have you ever been with someone who is not afraid of dogs but you are.  When a dog comes running at you both, it goes for you, my sweaty-palmed friend, not your companion! Why?  Animals, as you probably know, can sense fear — so can the universe and the universe is impartial.  It acquiesces to what it thinks you desire via your frequency output.  If your emotions are dialed into fear, expect life to become frightening.  The only thing you should fear is fear itself (thanks, President Roosevelt!).

2. Know That Love Conquers All

Get used to being tuned into your feelings and steering them to safer shores.  When you are in fear, inject some love into your aura by thinking of someone you love, your favorite pet, the infectious chuckle of your child or grandchild or a blissful memory. Change your vibration! This is how you get to expand on the feeling of love in the face of fear.  Show fear that you have too much love in your heart.  Fear is a mental construct in the absence of love.  Trust your instincts and obey your heart. Send love and compassion to all those who suffer or who are in situations you fear to be in. Even send love to the perpetrators of heinous crimes. Why? Because you won’t solve hate by chucking more venom at a situation. When you can send love to the victims and perpetrators alike, you are diffusing the energy and making a space for healing and learning to occur. The perpetrators of violent crimes will not ‘get better’ with negativity, hateful thoughts or jail sentences (that is not to say that they shouldn’t have to ‘pay’ for their crimes — we all have to face the music for our actions) but, in sending love and compassion, there may be a glimmer of hope that they will have a true awakening to spirit and show remorse or have a change of heart.

3. Take Control

Short, sweet and to the point.  If you want to be self-empowered then the first things you need are awareness and the ability to take responsibility for your actions.  These two fundamental principles are gateways for you to realize your inherent potential.  You are a co-creator, take responsibility for that and take control from this point onwards.

How wrong I was!

What changed my mind?

I’ve been getting SO many requests for the prices of the originals of these pieces that I just decided to bite the bullet and set them free into the wild unknown.

I’ve grown very attached to many of them as they are dotted all over my house — from flanking my bed to gracing my hubby’s music studio. It’s time for me to detach and let someone else enjoy the depths of these works, in the flesh.

Who’s Next Up on the Easel?

I am still effectively busy trying to complete this series.

The next painting I announced was going to be David Bowie. I was devastated to hear of his passing earlier this month and it feels strange now to carry on with my plans knowing he is no longer with us. But, who knows, perhaps he’ll make an appearance in spirit like my Jeff Buckley painting. 🙂

Let’s Talk About Green Stuff — It May Not Be What You Think!

Green is the New Black

When I say ‘let’s talk about the green stuff?’ what does your mind spring to?

  • money? Show me the bunce?
  • marijuana? Totally far out dude…
  • sustainable living — doing your reduced carbon footprint kind-of-thang, all cool and hippy like? Or
  • jealousy? The green-eyed, envy monster awaiting in each of us like Mr Hyde or our own personal Hulk.

Well, cast aside all the above notions because I want to talk about pure green.

Going for Gold

I remember an old British TV comedy series called Blackadder. One character, Lord Percy, decides to try his hand at alchemy (you know, making gold out of base metal). He manages to fashion something he called ‘pure green’. Lord Blackadder — who was broke and rather counting on Percy’s success — was utterly disappointed when, after being told by Percy that he was triumphant in his pursuit, his eyes fell on the green stone and not a nugget of gold.

My written reenactment has not done the actual comedy moment any good, I fear, but the point I’m trying to make is we do have something in our world that is better than gold. And, as Lord Percy discovered inadvertently, it is green.

The colour of nature.

Why is Green So Important?

Why do you feel more relaxed in a park? Or on top of a mountain? Or lying under a tree on a bed of green grass? Why does the sight of green rolling hills peek every poet and artists interest? Why are we drawn to green? Would it be as effective if it was red? Doubt it. Nature knows what she’s doing and here’s why:

The colour green is associated with:

  • Balance

It is the center colour of the spectrum (look up a rainbow and see for yourself!) — being in perfect balance even there! It is associated with abundance (lack of famine), water and everything plentiful on a primitive level.

The colour psychologically effects us all.

It is also a hue that is connected to:

  • positivity,
  • harmony,
  • refreshment,
  • universal love (it is the colour of our heart chakra),
  • rest and restoration,
  • reassurance and
  • peace.

Say NO to the Brain Fog!

Most of us are subject to sitting behind a computer screen or desk getting very little to no time in nature. Electronic devices and the addiction to social media is clogging our airwaves (both physically and mentally).

This leads to brain fog, stress, anxiety and a host of other things.

We are being disconnecting from our very source — nature and the balance, peace and harmony it brings.

There is light at the end of the tunnel though because just spending 15 minutes out in nature will make a difference to your mind, body and soul. Obviously, the more time you spend in nature the better it is.

Try it and see for yourself. If you’re feeling stressed out, go sit under a tree or take a walk in a park — or even just stare out at some treetops (best done outdoors though for the fresh air effect). Focus your gaze upon the green you see, try to put your attention on how you feel when you take it all in. Can you feel a drop in tension within your body?

The green we find in nature is meant to be our own personal therapy — go out and use it wisely whenever you see a gap!

When you’re sojourning overseas and you’ve got tons of luggage — it’s a real schlep, right? It’s much easier airport hopping when you’re traveling light. And a lot less to think or worry about too.

Life is no different.

Let Go Of the Bone And Try Something Fresher

You can’t expect to be light-hearted if you’re holding on to the past.

There’s a prime piece of T-bone steak waiting in his bowl but the Rottweiler is hanging on to last night’s dried up, old bone. Sound familiar?

Letting go of our past isn’t easy — no-one said it was. No matter if you are grieving a physical loss or an emotional wound — we all have ‘baggage’. Our job is to unpack it.

You don’t want to go the rest of your life carrying a backpack, do you? Not only will it give you back ache but it will also slow you down, tire you out and rob you of your present joy.

Baggage Was Never a Forever Thing

Your past was never meant to be carried as a burden. What happened to you — no matter what it was — all had a soul teaching for you to move through. Your job is to get the lesson.

If you’ve experienced abuse — perhaps your discovery is that you found your strength to move on or  your power to forgive. If you’ve experienced death — maybe your pearl of wisdom came in the shape and form of learning to let go in love or to find peace in vulnerability.

These are merely suggestions as we all have vastly different reasons for going through certain life experiences.

Every time I look back at the tougher times of my life, I can see there was always an illuminating teaching for me. You can very rarely feel it when you’re in it. It takes time to work through grief and heartache — which is perfectly natural and everyone’s period of mourning is different — just don’t get lost in the past.

A Personal Metaphor For Loss

In 2002 my husband and I moved to the UK and stayed there for 3  years. It was a thrilling experience but I did miss my homeland.

After a year of being there, I lost my father. It was such a devastating experience and I had to catch an emergency flight back to South Africa to help my mother with the necessaries.

When I flew back to the UK I began to shop. I bought everything and anything — it was pure compulsive behaviour. And to make matters worse, I shipped it all back to my mother to keep for me for when I returned, which she did.

I spent more posting the boxes of ‘stuff’ back than I paid for the items…true madness.

When I returned home for good, my mother led me to her garage where all these boxes were stacked to the ceiling. I couldn’t believe how much I’d sent (and spent)!

I went through all the treasures I had sent myself to find it was all…well, for want of a better word…crap!

I didn’t need it and ended up giving most of it away.

The Diamond in the Tale

What I did learn, in hindsight, was that I was filling a void left by my father’s death — shopping was my coping mechanism.

I could have kept the boxes but I knew that would have been holding on to the past and those boxes would turn out to be made of cement, holding me back and filling space I needed for my future.

It was the most freeing thing to do when I gave all that junk away. It even turned out to make two very special ladies extremely happy!

As I was clearing out the boxes from the garage, two Xhosa ladies came walking up the road selling beautiful hand-made baskets.

They saw some of the things from my boxes and asked if I would consider trading with them. I told them they could have the stuff but they insisted on giving me two awesome baskets. They literally danced and sang in joy back down the street with boxes piled on top of their heads.

I still have those baskets and every time I look at them I am reminded of this lesson with a smile on my face.

Christmas Fireworks!

It’s the season to be jolly — dust off the mistletoe and pucker up for that long line of friends and family just waiting to be welcomed into your house for another round of yearly festivities.

However, there is a darker side to the holidays (ho ho….humbug).

Being within close proximity to certain friends and family members over vast periods of celebratory time can lead to some festering issues, mounting stress and hair-raising quibbles.

Invariably, some wild words could get slung about the Christmas dining table!

We’ve all probably experienced our fair share of family squabbling during holiday gatherings but how can you ride out the storm without having a huge blow-out before you’ve even got to sample that hot, steamy Christmas pudding?

Remaining calm and peaceful at family reunions is no small feat — it requires a lot of awareness, internal reflection and non-reaction.

The button-pushers will always try to work their Christmas magic but you’re going to have a Santa sack full of antidotes. Below you’ll find zap-it-in-the-butt recipes to counteract disaster:

  1. Calm Christmas

    Reign (deer) It In — if someone is working on your last nerve ask yourself if you really need to react and cause a potential argument. Can you simply smile and walk away? See if you can be the still presence and avoid a hot chestnut from slipping down your trunks. It’s a great test to be non-reactive — can you pour ice over the coals this Christmas? Sometimes, when I feel overwhelmed by chaotic vibes I go and take 5 in the bathroom — just sit and take 3 long deep breaths and restore your essential energy. Walking away and creating space or a break in a quarrel can be the very thing needed to diffuse it.

  2. Root (beer) Yourself — ground yourself wherever possible. Take deep breaths and root yourself into the present moment. When you are quiet, calm and centered, you move into the space of still presence where you can become the observer and this can be a very illuminating place to be. You might even get some clarity on certain behavioral patterns in others which may lead to a better understanding. When we are being seduced to the dark side of arguments it’s better to keep shtum unless you have something incredibly significant to say — otherwise, you will only be adding fuel to the yule logs. Remember that most of what you say — in these heated situations — isn’t being heard because there is too much tumult around and ears tend to close whilst mouths tend to flap. Being the still observer offers you a way to stay in control of your emotions and gauge what needs to be said, done or to identify if this is your cue to take a stroll around the garden or build a snowman.
  3. Spread Good Cheer(s) — we all love our family and friends, but if you find yourself in a situation where you truly cannot contribute anything but loving them unconditionally, then do just that and send them love. Remain calm and balanced and focus on the love you have for them. Build on that and project it towards them. Remove yourself from the room if needs be and then do it in privacy — even if it means locking yourself in that bathroom again for a few minutes to gather/center yourself (your family and friends might wonder if that egg nog is acting as a diuretic but better that then a festive altercation). I guarantee you will have helped them more by doing this then by rising to the bait of drama and argumentative behavior.

Passing the Time

I was listening to a Dolores Cannon lecture yesterday (read more about her extraordinary life and her sad passing HERE), she said some profound things. One, however, really stuck out for me.

Time does not exist.

Yeah, I know that’s nothing new or revelationary but it’s still a hard concept to grapple with for most.

I mean who doesn’t wish for time to simply cease chiming away?

We’d all be youthful (no time, no age!) and less stressed or anxious as we wouldn’t have to scuttle about meeting our daily, hectic schedules. Let’s face it, we’d be able to fit a lot more into our lives without time because we wouldn’t have that sword of Damocles hanging over our head in the form of a ticking pendulum!

Set it to the Clock

On the other hand, time can be a great way to keep appointments. There’s nothing more exasperating than someone arriving late for a date! Time helps us to organize ourselves and to not waste…well…err…other peoples time.

You can also use a timer to boil an egg — another handy way to use ‘time’. The list could go on and I do get that time keeping can be an extraordinary useful tool. However, the emphasis is on tool, not fact.

Time — all our watches and clocks — is nothing more than a tool. There is no clock in the sky.

I know Einstein spoke about time being the 4th dimension and it is scientifically taken as such, however, I find it’s an iffy topic for me simply because it’s still a man-made construct.

Time is still an illusion. The planets, sun, solar system, galaxies and such are all on a course and that course has structure and dependability but ‘time’ isn’t real. Hence why some people still work on different calendars.

But what if everything is all happening at once? I don’t mean to lay into poor Einstein ’cause I think he was brilliant but we do have to question certain things or, at least, rethink what they mean and how much power we give that meaning.

We as human beings, have taken time on too literally or, should I say, linearly. Dolores Cannon went on to say that, in her many case studies, she was told that we are the only planet that observes time. We’re kind of a cosmic joke. Binding ourselves to it’s influence and rigidity.

They say that when we get rid of the concept of time, we will finally be able to travel interstellar! Well on that note, I’m ready to throw my time piece in!!!

Metaphors About Time

We’ve been told that you can liken time to a circle – never ending, never beginning.

Some say time is like a layered cake. You are experiencing your current moment as the top layer but if you cut into the cake you’ll see all the many other layers (points in time or other lifetimes) on top of each other — still there and existing.

I’ve heard great analogies of time being like a DVD. You can watch the story from start to finish and you can skip around the chapters and scenes at any point you wish, which is why some philosophers claim you could — theoretically speaking (although many people have already experienced this in dreams, altered states and in meditation) — visit the past and future.

It all sounds fabulous but my a-ha moment is still to come…

The Penny Drops…

It’s so simple, it’s maddening.

In the lecture I mentioned at the beginning of this article, it was said that we should stop using the word ‘time’ and replace it with ‘event’.

Huh? Is that it?

Yes, but it’s so acutely concise. Instead of referring to points in time, we should refer to them as events. Because time actually doesn’t exist but events do.

Meet the Astral Traveler

Say you can astral travel. You astral travel back in ‘time’ to your 13th birthday party. That party is still happening as an ongoing event — think of time as that layered cake example. You could even speak to yourself in ‘real time’ — in other words you are having a conversation with your pubescent self.

You would probably get back to your present moment and then suddenly remember the conversation you had with this ‘spirit being’ (who was actually you from the future) when you were 13 years old and this event will catch up with you in your present (lol…it’s a mind bender alright!!!).

You have now entered a new timeline from that specific event.

Say the same astral traveler decided to go further back in history to visit Beethoven. He sees this German composer working hard at his grand piano. He takes a peak over Ludwig’s shoulder and notices he’s writing Symphony no. 5!

The astral traveler is actually witnessing ‘history’ which would be Beethoven’s present moment.
