How to Become the Observer of Reality

Becoming the Observer of Reality

Stepping out of the matrix (our perceived reality) and becoming the ‘watcher’ brings a whole new dimension to life on this plane of existence. When we can observe ourselves in the game of life, we can start to transcend the limitations of belief, purpose and meaning altogether.

Belief, purpose and meaning all hold limitation and keep us locked in details – tethered to the ‘fine print’ and keeping us from experiencing true joy as we constantly try to justify, improve or ‘work on’ ourselves and our lives instead of being happy….like as in ‘right now’.

Playing with belief, purpose and meaning can be gratifying but will only lead you to a certain point in your evolution of consciousness. There is no judgment in having fun with these concepts if that is truly what you are doing – more often than not, we aren’t having fun with them and I think they can be rendered completely redundant.

Cinematic Triumphs

Think back to the Matrix movies – when a person was freed from the matrix, they were able to see that their reality was a construct within which one could manipulate and control circumstances to their advantage. This was clearly demonstrated in the famous scenes of the characters dodging bullets in the most precarious ways, jumping large distances from one building to another and so on and so forth.

As fantastic as this seems, they were still operating in a matrix – a confined reality with rules and regulations.

Saviors in the System

Then came Neo – the chosen one – who transcended the whole matrix program and instead of dodging bullets defied them by seeing through the illusion. The illusion, of course, was that the bullets weren’t real. Why dodge something that doesn’t exist? Neo was merely using the law of least effort and quite rightly so.

Think of the SIMS computer game – there may come a time when one of those characters reaches sentience and realizes that their whole life is merely an illusion

Neo didn’t need to work within the construct of the program referred to as the matrix –  he went beyond it to realize that it was an illusion and that he was infinite possibility in that reality (he even managed to come to this realization out of the program). He therefore did not limit himself to any belief within the matrix.

Banning Belief

Belief, after all, is just limitation through judging one thing as good and another as bad.

For example: I believe to see that life is fair. If I see life as being unfair I am in a negative framework, if I see it as being fair I am in a positive framework (both are polarized and put you in a box). The ‘Neo’ way is to see that life just is. It is impartial. Judging anything as good or bad is just keeping you tethered to the system. Your natural preference system will guide you to choosing what works best for you without judgment.

Aligning with Source

Neo embodied the premise that he was connected with Source and that he had only to think his will into creation and it became so. Without judgments. Ergo without limitation or any kind of belief structure.

It’s the  knowing that the Universe or Creation has your back and everything is as it should be – your only job is to keep expressing joy and love and you will constantly ascend to abundant new heights without even trying. Your inner radar is always wanting to point you to the highest vibration, it’s your natural magnetic north.

Your job is to allow it to do Its job without your constant interference.

Ponder for a moment: are your beliefs holding you back? Are your thoughts aligned with your heart (innate) or your head (ego).

For example: Heart may be urging you to play the piano again and compose beautiful music whilst head is saying, ‘I need to make money from this – how am I going to do that? Maybe I should make a CD and charge $10 then if I sell 100 000 I will finally be happy and rich’. If you let heart win, then you will let go of trying to control the gift and there’ll be no anxiety or high expectations only joy, satisfaction and contentment (which will inevitably bring you into a higher frequency and you will manifest abundance without limitation) as you become fully immersed in the moment in expressing your creativity. Head wants to control how you manifest wealth and it will drive you crazy for the rest of your life as it whines on and on about how you need to manipulate the process. It will keep telling you you need more and you’ll never be satisfied.

One path leads to joy and the other leads to frustration.

The law of attraction is simple cause and effect – you keep on thinking and feeling a certain way and you will cause an effect in your reality (everything you have in your life is a manifestation of the LOA). Using the LOA to effect your life in a more positive manner is a great tool (it’s like those training wheels on a bicycle) but it can also only get you so far before we use it as a belief system and put ourselves (and the LOA) very neatly into another box.

In my most humble opinion, if you want to take the LOA to a new level we are going to have to stop ‘using’ it and simply ‘be’ it. Transcend all the tools and training wheels and start to get that we ARE the law of attraction – we are infinite possibility.

Be like Neo and let it all go so you can rocket and soar above the clouds.

4 Programs That Lead to Blocked Abundance — How Many Are You Running?

Shit Header

The Ultimate Enema

Even the most dedicated Law of Attraction students run into walls that seem insurmountable. There are programs that lurk in the darkest recesses that need cache clearing. Holding onto these ‘junk’ programs will only constipate the flow of positive energy into your life.

Here are, what I like to call, the SHIT programs:

  • S — ‘S’ is for ‘shit happens‘ (a common but deadly troublesome software program) and the belief that life isn’t fair. The rich get richer and the poor suffer. Read related article: The Key to Success That May Surprise You (It Surprised Me!)
  • H — ‘H’ is for ‘humility’…or in this case misplaced humility. This kind of humility blocks us in receiving because it thinks it’s rude or embarrassing to receive help or, God forbid, to ask for it. This form of humility must decline such perceived ‘charity’ or ‘pity’. A program with lonely and bleak consequences.
  • I — ‘I’ is for ‘I’m not worthy’. This is the virus of the system and it’s total bollocks (an anagram of ‘ol blocks).
  • T — ‘T’ is for ‘try’. Yoda had it right, folks. To try is a woolly verb that really just implies more ‘trying’. Try, for me, is getting on a merry-go-round and expecting to go somewhere. Trying is the firewall program that blocks out actual DOING. It’s the ‘I might Be’ equivalent of the ‘I AM’ statement.

Right, so that spells out ‘SHIT’ (I’m always trying to justify my impish need to swear in respectable articles). Now let’s turn this around, shall we? Let’s delve into some deep S.H.I.T.

  • ‘S’ could rather stand for ‘satisfaction‘ (perhaps the Stones were running the ‘Shit Happens’ program when they wrote that they couldn’t get any?). Let’s turn ‘life isn’t fair’ into the reality of the program which is: Life is. It just is — you assign it meaning. So, why not see it as completely stupendous? Run the program that life is so stunningly satisfying that every corner you take there’s something there to make it even MORE satisfactory. Isn’t it just an awesome energy to be in — that of utter contentment and fulfillment? Don’t take my word for it, give it a bash and see if it works better than the ‘shit happens’ program.
  • ‘H’ could rather be used for ‘Hallelujah!’ — kick the hampering kind of humility to the curb! If you’re in a pickle and someone can help you (and preferably if the help is genuine and heart-based) let them! When you deny the energy of accepting you deny the other person the gift of giving. You’ll have your chance to pay it forward when the energy is right, so, accept graciously and stop blocking the abundance energy from flowing into and out through you. Read related article: How to Put the “Believe” in “Ask, Believe, Receive!”
  • ‘I’ can be tweaked just a tad to ‘I am worthy‘ — ’cause let’s face it, everybody is! You’re all divine little sausages (even the vegetarians! Yes, you too are meat encased in skin whether you like it or not). Embrace your divinity (I actually wrote a book about this called, Divine You which really goes into why I think you’re God). You are SO worthy because you are SO God, God is in You (even the religious can’t deny it if God is truly omnipotent)!
  • ‘T’ can translate to ‘transform‘ rather than try. You can change tracks any timeSUBSCRIBE icon 1 you like by taking the reigns of your God-given sovereignty and stepping into empowered responsibility for your thoughts and actions. Being resolute is the new sexy.

I can safely say that this has been an undeniably S.H.I.T. article.

How to Realign with Innate Gratitude

Listen to ‘How to Realign with Innate Gratitude’ by clicking the picture 🙂

When we try to experience the frequency referred to as gratitude, we’re told to be thankful for the roof over our heads, the food in our fridge, the clothes on our back, etc. — which is, no doubt, a great practice and a good place to start when we’re trying to raise our vibration.

5 Senses to Boost Your Gratitude

I was watching a movie the other day about a guy with severe impaired eyesight (as in saw only blobs of shapes and colour). It really got me to see gratitude from a different perspective.

Yeah, I know most of us say we’re truly grateful for everything in our lives — but do we really get how lucky we are?

We have 5 incredible senses that gift us with pleasure, delight and beauty every day! Even one of these senses is a huge blessing. Just try to:

  1. Imagine not being able to see — we take so much for-granted it’s insane.
  2. Imagine not ever hearing music again.
  3. Imagine not being able to taste chocolate. Read related article: Giving Life Meaning Through Cake
  4. Imagine not being able to experience the luxury of a nice hot bath or…no, let’s keep this clean ;).
  5. Imagine not being able to smell the sweet aroma of jasmine or coffee brewing.

Now, if you do have all (or most of) these senses available to you daily…which I’m guessing you do — you have incredible divine gifts to experience this third dimensional reality with. Read related article: Conquering Blocks Leads to Bold Brave Living

Gratitude is right there — immense gratitude. The sheer value of these senses boggles the mind. If you’re having a hard time trying to align with heart-felt gratitude, try meditating on all of your senses and how much pleasure they give you on a daily basis.

I’ll guarantee you’re going to literally see life in a totally different way — through a heart full of gratitude for what has always been there.

Building Blocks and Other Fun Stuff

Raising your vibration to attract general joy and excitement is all good and fine but there’s no denying that you’re going to run into a ton of limiting beliefs on your journey to living your best life.

Read related article: 20 Things to Do At Bedtime (To Raise Your Vibration!)

The Law of Attraction is awesome and it works, peeps, but these sneaky little buggers called ‘limiting beliefs’ (LB’s for short) have to come to the surface for clearing whether you like it or not.

“Every time you face this kind of threshold guardian, know that it’s your right of passage to a system upgrade.”

We have to walk through them if we’re going to be the responsible co-creators of our reality.

Breaking the LB Codex

These invisible walls, responsible for our bloody noses and bruised foreheads, try to highlight LB’s that we’ve taken on and agreed to. So, why not view them as huge reality-shifting friends rather than foes?

Just remember, everything we think is usually rooted in some belief or another. You can change these beliefs any time you want to. It’s called choice and free-will. You are a creator and you can re-create time and time again — there’s no limitation but the one you have set for yourself.

When you face these issues head on you can start to dissolve the BS you’ve agreed to in the past and change tracks to a brighter less inhibited future. The universe definitely has your back, so try that belief on for size!

There are 3 things you should bear in mind when tackling LB’s — greet them with:

  1. copious amounts of self love (and general love),
  2. forgiveness (to yourself and others) and
  3. excitement as to what awaits you on the other side of your limiting belief (hint: it’s usually magic).

The Good News is…

These LB’s usually come at us when we’re about to make a massive breakthrough. So, that’s fab news, right?

We can start viewing our hurdles as lucky-frigging-charms! “Oh look, I’ve hit a block…crack open the champagne, darling!!!

I’ve been in a bit of a funk recently and I had some of my awesome CLN colleagues put perspective to my woes in a recent chat we all had. I highly recommend — when facing your little LB demons — talking about it to your tribe.

It’s really important to find like-minded people/groups/chat-rooms where you can get some real compassionate support. I know a lot of people have a hard time finding people who are on their wave-length (to put it mildly) but a plethora of support is out there if you set an intention to find it/them.

Everyone needs an ear every now and then and — even if you don’t feel like airing your troubles — you never know who may have the key to unlock a problem you’re facing.

Eruptions and Clearings

After I had my ‘a-ha’ moment, my limiting belief literally surfaced. Now comes the clearing — but first…

Let me tell you a funny and rather embarrassing personal truth of mine: When I walk through these LB blocks I usually break out into spots/hives/volcanic eruptions on my face — this time I even got an ulcer on the inside of my mouth — instantly! My husband took one look at me and said, ‘Ah, you’re clearing something?‘.

Believe it or not, the moment I ‘let it go‘ (as in bawled my eyes out) they disappeared in a flash. How cool is that? Aren’t we super-freaky, cool human beans? Everyone is going to work it out in different ways, of course. Not everyone has to go all red, blotchy and utterly unattractive. However, I embrace this weird quirk of mine ’cause I know it’s paradigm shifting shit going down every time it happens — WOOHOO and YIPPEE-YA-YAY!

Every time you face this kind of threshold guardian, know that it’s your right of passage to a system upgrade. Face it with courage and bravery and you’re going to be your own knight in shining armor.

2 Dances You’re Going to Want to Learn Today to Manifest Like a Pro

Manifest Your Bliss

Straight off the cuff, the 2 dances I’m going to step around are avoidance and abundance. Let’s take a slightly different look at these 2 interesting jigs:

Dance no. 1 — The Void Dance

According to Bashar (an entity — channeled through Darryl Anka — whose favorite element happens to be ‘the void’), we don’t need to — in essence — ‘attract’ anything into our lives because everything we could want already exists.

Everything we could ever think of doing is being played out in parallel dimensions, it’s just our job to ‘tune’ into the vibrational match or frequency of what we want/that which brings us the most excitement.

Seeing as we are all creator gods, we don’t need to do anything but hone our vibration to change tracks. To do this, you need to: Believe, think and feel what it is you want AND, to add my twist, engage in avoidance (but not in the way you may think!).

The only thing KEEPING us from experiencing that which we want is the layers of limiting beliefs we’ve clogged our auric airwaves with. So, avoidance could be really useful when using it to samba from a completely different perspective.

The dictionary definition of the word ‘avoidance‘ is:

  1. The action of keeping away from or not doing something. — in this case, deflect limiting beliefs and keep them away from your frequency! Tell those limiting beliefs to take a hike — don’t buy into them anymore!
  2. The action of repudiating, nullifying, or rendering void a decree or contract. — in this case, render your limiting belief contracts null and void! Everything is neutral (void) until YOU give it meaning.

Taking a fresh look at the word avoidance (in the above sense) is a good way to exercise your right to keep away the limiting beliefs and to cancel your subscription tot hem. Do this and let the natural state of being — joy — radiate through!

Perspective is key. This does NOT give you a permission slip to avoid the important things like taking action, looking out for synchronicity and getting clear on your thoughts and feelings!!! Read related article: Why Synchronicity Can Change Your Life

How to Tango in the Void

In the Tao Te Ching you can use the Tao any way you want — it is empty but inexhaustible (sounds like the void, right?). What is the Tao? In Chinese philosophy, it is the absolute principle underlying the universe. It is a combination of yin and yang and signifies the way that is in harmony with the natural order.

Is it hard to use the void? No. Here’s how you can make a start:

  • Align with your thoughts and emotions. Thoughts injected with feeling create everything in the universe. What are you thinking about the most? What emotions are you broadcasting? Be completely honest with yourself. Can you see how you are consciously or unconsciously bringing about manifestations in your life that are aligning with what you think/feel the most about? Okay, most of you probably know this point by now — it’s ‘old school’ stuff — but it’s seriously important and here’s why: Manifesting has become increasingly more instantaneous! It’s actually pretty cool.  I think it’s a result of the ‘quickening’ or ‘awakening’ (or whatever else you want to call it) but, holy crap, my hombre — things are heating up in that void of creation!
  • Manifest wisely. Instant manifestation can be dangerous for some and great for others. This is why getting clear with what your mind is preoccupied with is of the utmost significance now. We’re in a potent manifesting energy, where you are going to have things pop up with much more speed than before — the good, the bad and the darn-right ugly. Sometimes what we think we want could be contrary to what our soul really wants. Keep fine tuning your dial.
  • Use the void as your clean slate. What does this mean? Get clear today — hell, right now — on what you want to see unfold. What you’re thinking and projecting now is going to be featuring in those up and coming NOW moments that we refer to as ‘the future’. Be specific, write it down, read it out every morning and take action where you can. Detach from the outcome (let go and don’t try to control how it happens) and watch out for synchronicities that will guide you to achieve your greatest potential/bliss or whatever you came here to experience with great enthusiasm and excitement (read more about that HERE). Most people don’t even know what they want to manifest so they just leave it to fate. Wake up call! Fate, if you like, is you unconsciously manifesting whatever you’re thinking about the most! So you can become a conscious co-creator of your reality or you can subject your life to your random and vague inner dialogue. Read related article about why life is actually meaningless until you inject it with meaning here: The Key to Success That May Surprise You (It Surprised Me!)

Fluff up your life by dancing in that void and expressing your bliss.

Are You Good at Manifesting Nothing?

The biggest trouble I’m seeing at the moment is people who say that nothing is manifesting in their life. Wrong! If this is you, you are absolutely manifesting more ‘void’ when you say or think that ‘nothing’ is happening. You’re stuck in neutral! Shift into gear and step on that accelerator!

Try a little patience and mining your feelings real deep for any lurking saboteurs — those critters can get into every crack imaginable!

You can’t move forward if you’ve got baggage weighing you down (aka limiting beliefs — just remember EVERYTHING is a belief, you get to choose which ones you keep or toss). We’ve all got to do a bit (or lot) of introspection before our manifestations really take off.

Dance no. 2 — The Bun Dance

‘Bun’ dancing (shaking that booty!) is just a great by-product of void dancing…yip, you guessed it, it’s ABUNDANCE — your innate state of being.

When you scrape off all those repugnant limiting beliefs and shine on like a shaft of gold when all around is dark — then you will step into your abundance. Abundance is getting whatever you need when you need it — pretty cool, right?

Wiggle that arse and start a flash-mob-a-bun-dance!

That’s it for today, folks. It was a bit of an abstract article but hopefully it will offer a different perspective to ponder.

Crazy lady over and out.

The Key to Success That May Surprise You (It Surprised Me!)

Do You Know What Modality of Life You Are Experiencing?

1122

I did an online Dr. Joe Dispenza course and something really hit a home run with me in one of the lessons. He was speaking about people being in two modes of living: Survival Mode or Creation Mode.

Now this takes me back to around 2011 when I was being regressed by a metaphysical healer. She took the opportunity to ask my ‘higher self’ the ultimate question, ‘what is the point of living – what’s the meaning to all this?’ to which I answered, ‘Creativity, duh!’

It seemed logical enough and made sense at the time, but, now — with that simple statement and the course I’ve completed in tow — it’s really starting to ignite the cogs and wheels in my mind and they’re turning big time!

Let’s Take anUnadulterated Look at Survival Mode Living

Society gears us to run in survival mode — that ‘fight or flight’ concept. We are continuously stressed out which fires up our adrenalin, which alerts the body to an inherent danger (as in there is a cheetah around the corner). This sparks our adrenal glands to produce said adrenalin that elevates our heart rate and blood pressure (and a whole lot more technical stuff that I’m not going to bore you with here) and basically works us up to ‘react’ — which (in the case of the cheetah lurking around the second bush to your left) would be a welcomed response. However, in our modern day living, only causes us to build up anxiety and — let’s face it — heart disease and countless other undesirable conditions.

“There’s a terrible price to pay for stress in your life – it really takes a hit on your heart”. — Leeza Gibbons

If you’re under constant strain, your organs are under this constant strain — you are going to experience dis-ease. Stress is probably the no. 1 killer in the world and I have backup. According to the American Psychological Association, acute stress is linked to these six primary causes of death: heart disease, cancer, lung ailments, accidents, cirrhosis of the liver and suicide. Stress-related ailments also account for approximately 75 percent of all doctor’s office visits.

And why? Because we are programmed to chase that proverbial dangling carrot (you know the one — it has the colouring of Trumps fake tan and the body shape of Kim Kardashian’s derriere) — we’re trying to survive in a capitalist societal structure that places no credibility on creativity. Creatives are usually mad, right? Mad or broke or both.

This irritating, high-society, titillating carrot can come in many shapes and sizes, usually dressed up as a house in a safe, little suburb (white picket fence optional — nowadays it’s more like an electric 6 foot tall picket fence. Scrap that, make it a Vibracrete wall), the 2 and a half kids running in the back yard (which brings day-care/school/college/university fees and extra mouths to feed and bodies to clothe), a fancy car (because you’ve got to keep up with the Jones’s et al) and a 9-5 job to pay for the lot and keep you firmly fixed on that loop until you can retire at say 65 and get a gold watch and a hand-shake.Whew! That was a mouthful.

Now, don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing off beam with wanting your basic needs met and to raise a family, I just don’t think society is putting too much credence on your well-being in the galvanized modality of contemporary living in the twenty first century.

Now Let’s Take a Look at Creative Mode Thriving

Here’s where we get to express ourselves through ingenuity, imagination and vision. Now this can be anything from the usual suspects: art, music, poetry and dance to pretty much anything else. You can inject creative flare into any job — from landscaping, architecture, being a mathematician to street sweeper, toilet cleaner or house keeper. Let me share my favourite story of a particularly artistic bathroom attendant at our local petrol station. She decorates the basins with beautiful arrays of flowers, foliage and leaves that she picks fresh every day. She does the most outstanding arrangements. Not only does this make you smile when you walk into the facilities (spreading joy) but she gets good tips (energy exchange). It’s her way of beautifying her surrounds and making the experience a good one for others too. We could all take a leaf out of her book (literally and figuratively).

“Creativity is piercing the mundane to find the marvelous.” — Bill Moyers

When we are able to express ourselves creatively, we get into the ‘zone’. That zone brings us infinite pleasure and joy. This affects our surrounds and the people with whom we interact; it also gives us a sense of purpose.

When we suppress our urges to beautify and express, we start to feel anger and resentment — the world starts to hold no meaning for us. Why? In my most humble opinion, it’s because creative mode is our natural state. It’s why we came here. The universe is ever-expanding and we are a microcosm of the macrocosm. Ergo, we want to expand our creative experience too. Creation involves birthing new ideas and innovative ways of being and living, new forms of art and entertainment, it includes physical birthing and raising your children in a creative space and it brings about the desire to beautify your space albeit your office, home, garden, community, etc. We seem to have an inherent desire for beautiful things — we’re like human magpies, we just can’t help ourselves. I think this is perfectly wonderful to feel this way.

When your environment is looking glorious and your garden is lush and green, it immediately gives you a sense of inner peace and calm. When your environment is messy and your garden is dry and dead or full of weeds, it dampens your spirits.

If you are in a job you hate but feel trapped (believe me…I’ve been there, done that!), there is always a way to make a change. You can always choose to experience something different, something that showcases more of yourtrue creative genius — something that will satisfy your soul more than a daily grind. This doesn’t mean you have to quit your job right away. It’s always good to have a game plan. If you don’t know what you want to do, just put it out there. Ask the universe to show you signs and synchronicities as to which direction you should take to make you happy and to enter creation mode. Make a vision board, speak to people about your dream (you never know who might hold an opportunity for you) and set aside time (it can be just 10 minutes) every morning and evening to visualize where you want to be. Don’t worry too much about how you’re going to get there — just put your feelers out and wait for a response from the universe. It will come if you’re willing to look for it and have faith. When the opportunity arises, take action.

I can’t tell you how many jobs I went through before I found what I really wanted to do. I’ve been doing that for over 10 years now, I’m self-employed and I’m loving it! I never thought in my dizziest daydreams that I would be doing what I’m doing now (which is painting, writing and music) and making a living from it. I remember being told that artists either starve, go mad or both and only make it when they die, writers live on the bread line and musicians…well, what can you say about musicians — they’re bums, aren’t they, busking on every street corner?

Well, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Your reality is what you make it out to be. If you believe this malarkey, then this could very well be your reality. I decided to choose not to believe that my chosen skills would bring me a life of struggle and strife — quite the opposite, I chose to believe I would thrive. Now, I’m really glad I chose not to buy into that reality (even though it did take me about 10 years to change tracks). I truly hope you choose a belief that points you towards living the life you came here to experience!

Giving Life Meaning Through Cake

Have Your Cake and Eat It

Let’s Bake a Cake

Say you fancy making something sweet for yourself — a real treat. You get in that kitchen and you start mixing up a storm — you’ve got your self-raising flour, eggs, milk, butter, vanilla and they’re blending with ease.

You set your oven to heat up to the correct temperature to cook your delicious cake. You’re almost about to slip that cake into the cooker when you remember you didn’t add the sugar to your mixture! What a disaster that would’ve been?!

You march over to the sugar container but you hesitate. Maybe you should rather put salt in?

You stand over the sugar and salt debating which one to use and you decide to add the salt.

Seems ludicrous, doesn’t it?

Salt Gets a Bad Wrap, Metaphorically Speaking

  • Without the sugar in the cake, the cake would have been rather bland or neutral in taste, right?
  • If you’d substituted salt with the sugar, the cake would’ve been inedible.
  • With the right amount of sugar, you would’ve been enjoying your confection on the porch right this minute with a nice cup of tea.

This is an allegory for life being neutral/meaningless until you give it meaning (sugar/salt).

Read related article here: The Key to Success That May Surprise You (It Surprised Me!)

Often people dream of achieving something (baking a cake) and then inject their desire with negativity (salt) instead of optimism and feelings of elation (sugar). It seems like a no-brainer that if you’re trying to manifest something, the last thing you want to do is project all the things that are wrong, could go wrong or have gone wrong in the past.

Well, not unless you want things to go horribly wrong.

Adding salt to your cake batter sounds ridiculous but we are doing it all the time in the culinary school of life.

Next time you’re thinking of baking a cake (or cooking up a dream), don’t forget to coat it with sugar! Feelings of love, mirth, elation, delight, optimism, bliss and surety will bring you the sweetest tasting experience.  It’s your job to follow the recipe.

10 TOP Tips to Keep You Happy!

Happy Header

With so much going on in the daily life of the average Joe, it is hard to stay motivated.  We sometimes feel beaten down by society and all the things we occupy ourselves with, voluntary or involuntary.

This can range from commuting, work, school runs, to housework, helping the kids with homework, cooking and finding precious time to unwind — which usually ends  up with us watching TV. But how can we manage our time better to incorporate the things we long to do but feel we have no time for?

Here are 10 tips to get you excited and keep you motivated to enjoy living another day:

1. Quality Sleep

New Divine You CoverThis is one of the most important things you can gift yourself and your family with.  Make space in your night-time schedule to start winding down at least 1 hour prior to going to bed.  You can light some calming, soothing essential oils, such as lavender and chamomile — will assist in good, sound sleep.  You can have a warm, milky drink or some herbal tea.  Switch off all radios and TV’s that are keeping you engaged in noise and ‘action’.  Instead, you can read that book you’ve been promising yourself or listen to some relaxing music.  All of these things can aid you into an alpha brain wave state, which allows your mind to relax and disconnect.  You must avoid falling asleep on a full stomach or, even worse, falling asleep with the TV on.  Your mind still takes in everything it hears, even whilst asleep, and having the TV on will not only disrupt your sleep but possibly cause you to have nightmares.

2. Berry Boost

With a good nights sleep tucked safely under your belt, what better way to start your morning off with than a berry smoothie?  This is quick and easy to make and will give your system a boost of sustainable energy.  These smoothies keep me going for about 4-5 hours.  They are great for your skin too, berries have anti-aging properties and the calcium is good for your bones, ladies!  A quick recipe I use is (for one 500ml serving):  Take 2 handfuls of mixed, frozen berries (or fresh if you like, I like the frozen ones because they give a kind of ‘crushed ice’ effect), 2 squirts of Stevia, 4 tablespoons of plain yoghurt and top up with some milk.  Blend and drink your way to vitality and well-being!

3. Time Productivity

Use your time wisely.  If you commute to work by public service, take this opportunity to meditate or read.  Make it ‘you’ time.  If you can, it is great to shut your eyes in the morning and the evening (could be on your way to or from work  if you are traveling by public service) — for just 10-20 minutes at a time — to meditate and clear your mind.  This will benefit you in more ways than you can imagine.  It also gives you a break from the mind chatter or what I like to call ‘white noise’.  This allows more productive thoughts through instead of the useless and incessant worry that can clog up the mind.

4. Breathing

Huh?  Don’t I do this automatically?  Yes, but most people are in the habit of shallow breathing.  You need to oxygenate your body for optimum productivity and chi (vital force).  Try to, at least every hour, breath in to the count of 5, hold it to the count of 5 and exhale to the count of 5.  This will give you a boost during the day.

5 Easy Steps to Meditating (No Lotus Position Required)

5. Let Loose

This is an integral step for you to de-stress after a long day. Explore an activity that is tantamount to letting the ‘inner child’ out to play.  I find it really helpful to put on some upbeat music and have a sing-song and dance around the house.  Get your groove on and invite your family to join in.  You can do this for just 30 minutes and it is a really fun way to get moving and to unwind.  The best part is you also get a great workout — physically and vocally!  Let your inner diva shine!

6. Keep it Clean

This is a macrocosm/microcosm thing — it affects the inside and the outside world.  When you have a neat, tidy and clean home and/or office, you are happier.  When you have a clean, refreshed body, you are happier.  I have to tell you about my dog.  She hates her bath, as do so many of our canine counterparts, but after she has been through this torturous activity, she runs around the garden like a dog-reborn — smiling, barking and just generally frolicking like a pup.  Bath-time also equates to going for a walk (which she does regularly) but when she walks after her bath, she has a spring in her step and a wag in her tail that is much more noticeable.  This is a great metaphor for how we feel when our bodies are bathed (make your bath-time a treat too — get some nice smelly soaps and bubble-bath and make it an event) and our houses or offices are spic-and-span and organized.

7. Eat Well

Another part of keeping it clean, is keeping the inside of your sacred body clean and invest in a detox every now and again.  Or better still, make it a daily habit to eat healthy fresh foods.  You know the kind I’m talking about so I’m not going to go into detail.  This is a no-brainer, you are what you eat.  Keep it fresh, colourful and simple and your system will be alive and vibrant, leaving you feeling energized and ready to take on the world.  Have you noticed how sluggish you feel when you’ve pigged out on a burger and chips?  Yeah?  Well, you need to get real about what you are putting in and perhaps compare that to what you are getting out!  You may have a Porsche but you can’t run it on horse manure.

8. Creative Space

This is really important.  We all need to express ourselves creatively, no matter if it takes the form of art, writing, decorating, drawing, constructing/ building, etc.  It is hugely beneficial to give yourself some time and a quiet space to be creative.  If it is once a day, that is great.  If you can’t fit it in daily then at least allocate yourself a good few days of the week to squeeze in 2-3 hours of creative expression time.  You can even make this a family activity where everyone gets time out to do something fun.  It will teach you and your family the benefit of taking care of your own needs in an unselfish and productive way.

9. Gratitude

Take time out, especially with your family, to give thanks for all that you  do have in your life right now.  This can be over a meal, as is commonly practiced in the saying of Grace.  I am not a religious person but I do see the benefits of giving thanks.  This could also be done in your quiet time in the bath, or whilst you are commuting, etc.  You can explain the benefits to your family and encourage them to also find a quiet minute or two to reflect on being grateful.  This feeds positivity and will nurture your good feelings ratio.

10. Reflect

When you find the space to reflect on your life, your goals and your dreams, you can keep the picture of your destiny clear and precise.  When you don’t take time out to ponder and to re-align with your intentions, you may lose sight of where you are headed.  You can sometimes slip into a stream that does not fit the destination of your dream.  Make a vision board where you can pin all the things you desire and all that you would like to manifest in your life experience.  Make sure you hold yourself accountable for taking action towards your goals and keep this board somewhere where you will see it every day.

What is most important of all is that you enjoy your journey, this life is precious and special and you can make each day an enjoyable experience.

If you catch yourself falling into boredom or despair, simply remind yourself that you can make a choice to re-align to a more joyful outlook — run through this checklist and see if there is anything you can do or improve on to bring you into a state of balance and fulfillment.

In the wise words of Eckhart Tolle, you can either be enthusiastic about what you are doing, enjoy what you are doing or accept what you are doing.  When you do not fall into any of these 3 categories you set yourself up for feeling resentment or frustration.

How to Create Opportunity

How to Create Opportunity

I have to laugh…whenever I write articles, my first step is to check that I’ve written a kick-ass title. When I typed this title ‘How to Create Opportunity‘ it scored 125%. I didn’t even know that was possible! Clearly the universe wants you to hear this.

Why Do We Have More Opportunity Than Ever?

Here it goes:

I, all too often, hear the same stories of people wallowing in their lives because there is lack of opportunity to get them where they want to be. I’m afraid I don’t buy into that and here’s why:

  • Never before in the history of civilization (Ancient Alien theorists may suggest otherwise but for the sake of the article, let’s soldier on) have we had something called the World Wide Web!
  • Never before in the history of civilization (insert Ancient Alien theory here too) have so many people been literally at our fingertips.
  • Never before has the world been at our feet, like it is today.

Read related article: How to Nuke Limiting Beliefs

Don’t Buy Into Lack

Don’t talk to me about lack of opportunity. The world is literally bulging with opportunities our fore-fathers couldn’t have dreamed about!

So, how do we create opportunity? The answer is simple (and you’re probably not going to like it, or maybe you’ll prove me wrong?).

Take action.

You can make all the vision boards in the world, you can visualize your butt off, you can do mantras and meditations (and all of these things help exponentially) but it is meaningless if you do not TAKE ACTION.

Read related article: How to Turn Disappointment into Opportunity

What this DOES NOT mean:

  • You try to control and force something to work
  • You stop doing things like meditating, visualization and making vision boards

What this DOES mean:

  • You get your derriere out the door and mingle with REAL people (there is NOTHING that gets you further than speaking and putting your feelers out there). You can meet like-minded people, people who may hold a piece of your puzzle or people who have ideas that you wouldn’t have thought of. Get out there and talk, you may even have some information that will help others. This life is all about us helping each other, right?
  • When you do something like make a vision board or write down a set of goals — it’s important to stay in that energy and feel what it’s like to have that manifest now but it is just as imperative to let it go. When you let it go and don’t try to control the outcome, you allow the universe to get you there on the quickest slipstream.
  • Meditate on opportunity, ask the universe for synchronicity and when you get it — take action! It may not come in the shape or form that you think, so keep those eyes peeled.
  • Google is a great tool to zip you about the globe. You can read up on what you want to achieve. You can see other peoples success stories or read tips and tricks on your given field. A lot of the times your dream requires WORK. There are so many things I still want to try my hand out at and I know it’s going to take strategy, dedication and some serious time-management with copious doses of patience but it doesn’t put me off.

How to Turn Disappointment into Opportunity

Disappointment - A new way to look at it

Disappointment: Your Passport to Greater Things

“Sometimes when you get disappointment it makes you stronger.” — David Rudisa

Some existential theories suggest that the Universe or our current reality is impartial — it’s neutral, like Switzerland. There is no meaning to life except that which we give it.

Now before this article starts to sound like a downer, I want to interject that this is actually an outrageously great opportunity and here’s why:

  1. If the Universe has no meaning (impartial, neutral, etc) and we are the ones giving it meaning (after all, it is our playground — our realm of freedom to choose) then we can change the game at any time which is cause for massive celebration!
  2. If we truly are creating our reality (as states the Law of Attraction — which, coincidentally, is also impartial. Read more about that here in this 4 part Law of Attraction series: LOA – Aligning with How You Are Feeling), then we are endowing meaning to our existence all the time whether we’re conscious of it or not. How about making a conscious decision to make it a good one, eh?
  3. We are at a tipping point when we are faced with disappointment — we can either choose to see it as a negative experience or choose to see it as some kind of Divine timing and fall into the arms of the Universe and Trust (with a big T) that the Universe has our backs no matter what.

Let me explain: When you trust with a big ‘T’ is simply means you know there is a bigger picture than the one you are experiencing. When someone breaks your trust (little ‘t’) you still Trust that there is a greater lesson for your soul in there. When you can do this, you’re going to put a positive spin on your life and all the situations you find yourself in. I learned this pearl of wisdom from Vicki Howie’s and her wonderful Chakra Boosting Course, which I highly recommend!

Choice — Your Gateway to Opportunity

“Disenchantment, whether it is a minor disappointment or a major shock, is the signal that things are moving into transition in our lives.” — William Throsby Bridges

If life is indeed meaningless and you give it meaning by your choices, you’re in the drivers seat! Every choice you make could be steering you to positive outcomes, if you allow yourself to charge your life in this new way.

My Recent Disappointment

I was recently very let down by someone that I trusted. I thought they were impeccable with their word and — long story short — they weren’t.

At first I vented out my anger and had a good rant. You know the type, ‘how could they do this to me?’, ‘what an asshole!’, ‘why do people act this way — don’t they have any scruples?’. I’m a huge advocate of letting out your emotions. Think of it like a kettle boiling on the burner with the lid on — you’ve got to relieve the lid at some point to let the steam out, right?

When I’d done my venting and had let out of my system all that needed to be — I started to ask myself these 2 important questions:

  1. What was my lesson? I concluded that this person I was dealing with was not impeccable with their word and that I needed to be cautious with them — which is why I got this ‘little burn’. In fact, by heeding the warning signs of this first let down,  I may have prevented having a kettle full of hot water poured down my front by their actions. Rather a little burn than being scalded.
  2. Is there perhaps something better around the corner that this fallen through agreement has made space for? Yes! I believe so. I don’t know what it is yet but I’m paving the way to give this situation a positive meaning. I trust that everything happens for a reason and that the Universe has my back (‘big T’ Trust in action). The timing is indeed Divine and I’ll curiously await either a better opportunity than the one on offer or keep my eyes peeled for an crisis I may have averted.

How Long Are You Going to Stay Stuck in the Funk?

There are 3 main definitions of funk:

  1. A foul smell or odor,
  2. A type of music that combines elements of rhythm and blues with soul, percussive vocals, strong bass and heavy down-beats,
  3. A state of great fear, panic or fluster. A depressed, sad or sorry state of mind.

I’m going to be discussing the latter form of funk.

Funky Town

Any musician would give their eye teeth (what a strange old saying) to get a good dose of the funk — the kind that separates the wheat from the chaff in the music industry. The Red Hot Chili Peppers are doused with the funk and have had a long and lucrative career because of its incredible mass appeal.

However, when life throws us a curve ball and we get stuck in the quagmire of that smelly, crappy kind of funk — that just ‘aint worth singing about.

Thing is we all have a choice.

Bad Taste in Your Mouth? Suck on a Mint

We all have our moment in the sun…and in the shade. When the cloud of despair rains down, there’s no judgment in having a pity party. For a while that is (some people’s ‘while’ lasts a bit longer than others. In fact, some folks’ ‘while’ turns into ‘wile’ and they try to pull others down into their stratagem ’cause they don’t want to shovel out. Misery enjoys company, don’t you know?).

Problem is, many people get stuck at the Mad Hatters Time (and Tea) Guzzling Pity Party for a lifetime not realizing that at any time one can get their Alice on and leave the table to join the path of great adventure again.

Funk, Flunk or Flank

Getting stuck in a funk has its ups too, you know. Nothing happens to you without good reason (here’s where I get pelted with tomatoes ’cause I know everyone loves a cliché). Read more here: Plot Twist! 3 Things You Desperately Need to Know About Game Changes

If you’re brave enough to mine your downs, you’re going to shovel out of the funk ditch without flunking out on life. Even if you flank out of it by fringing around the border of the funk, you’ll make it through to the other side.

Seeing that this article is heading more for a play on words than any philosophical feat (and I’m not to sure where it’s going), let me end on this:

At any given point (you’re never too old, too late, too weary, too ‘far gone’ or whatever other excuse you can conjure up), you can make another choice and completely change direction in your life. Don’t let your circumstances define who you are — only let your choices do that.

If You Love Trees, You Simply Can’t Miss Out on This New Painting!

Lyme Disease: What They’re Not Telling You

What the…?

A friend of mine was recently diagnosed with Lyme disease and she shared a documentary called, ‘Under Our Skin‘ (which I will embed for you to watch at the end of this post). I just had to share it with you all as I was totally gobsmacked after sitting through, what I have to call, a reality check — yup, one of those ‘every human being needs to watch‘ type-things.

It didn’t make it any better that I’m currently rereading Stephen King’s, The Stand (about a runaway strain of the flu that brought down humanity and brought on the biblical Apocalypse).

All jokes aside, I had heard of Lyme disease but wasn’t really clued up about it and was totally unaware of the whole controversy surrounding chronic Lyme disease and the treatment thereof (amounting to the level of ‘conspiracy theory’, I might add!) .

You can read more about this conditions overview and clinical trials at the NHS (UK) site here: Lyme disease.

What is it?

In a nutshell, it is a bacterial infection spread by infected ticks to humans. If detected in its early stages, it can be treated quite effectively but if it is left undiagnosed, it can lead to chronic Lyme disease, which can only be managed at the moment (and to great financial cost and physical suffering).

The sad thing is, not enough research is being done or deemed necessary as to whether it can be spread as a STD or if it is passed on to the unborn fetus in the womb (although the documentary I’m about to share is pretty convincing that it is).

The Unbelievable Divide

For those of you who don’t know, there is a split in the medical field over chronic Lyme disease — some doctors deny it even exists whilst others try their best to treat patients suffering with this debilitating illness. Treatment is hard to come by in certain countries and some doctors even brush the disease off as being psychosomatic.

The doctors who are ballsy enough to treat the conditions are often sued and lose their license to practice medicine (paper trail leading back to frustrated medical insurance companies who aren’t too happy about paying for long term treatments).

The most common symptoms (although the list is as long as your arm!) are:

  • extreme pain and swollen joints,
  • nervous system conditions such as numbness, pain in limbs, memory loss and paralysis of facial muscles,
  • heart problems,
  • sensitivity to light, migraines, stiff neck due to inflammation of the membranes surrounding the spine and brain

As I said, the list is long, and can also include rashes and shaking. There are reasons to believe that this bacteria could indeed be linked to MS, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer, fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (to name a few common biggies).

But don’t take my word for it, please watch the documentary below — it’s a real eye-opener! And please share it with family and friends so we can all have a broader range of compassion for the souls who are dealing with this or have a loved one who is. Thank you.

  1. Conforming is nuts, weird is way cooler —  Don’t try to be who you are not.  Everyone wants an original not a copy — thinking out of the box is not even good enough…heck, burn the box! Most people who truly make it in this life have brought something truly unique into the world. If non-conforming get’s you the nickname ‘weirdo’, wear it with pride and read this article to prove how spectacularly awesome being weird is: Why Being Weird is Unusually Cool!
  2. Don’t take things personally — Being young certainly came with inadvertently taking on the opinions of our peers and family. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and tastes but there is no ‘blanket’ rule over what the truth is as there are over 7 billion different perspectives on earth right now. You’re never going to have universal appeal so be happy with the unique you. Read more about throwing out things that don’t serve you here: 8 Tips on How to Stop Caring What Other People Think of You
  3. Don’t hold a grudge — to forgive literally means to release from a debt. If only I had known back then that to hold a grudge means extra baggage for you! Read related article: Want to Live Longer?
  4. Make good choices — our choices define who we are more than our abilities sub button(paraphrasing here from J.K. Rowling’s character, Dumbledore, from the Harry Potter series). We make big and small choices daily and, let’s face it, those choices carry weight as they affect our lives.  If you take a tumble from the bandwagon, there is always a solution to any given problem — that’s if you are quiet enough to hear the innate wisdom that is always inside your heart (read related article: How to Use Your Heart Wisdom).  Life doesn’t just randomly happen to you if you take responsibility for your choices — good and bad.
  5. Your thoughts are uber powerful! — How utterly cool would it have been to know — back in the day — that your thoughts are the catalyst (along with your feeling frequency) to manifesting whatever you want in your life!?! Damn, all the things I could’ve done with the Law of Attraction in my youth…alas. Good news is, it’s never too late to start taking the bull by the horns and direct your life with new thoughts and feelings that serve you (instead of work against you). It’s truly incredible that you can do or be anything you want to be by aligning your feelings with where you want to be or with what you want to achieve. Read related articles here: LOA – Aligning with How You Are FeelingLOA – Are You an Accident Waiting to Happen?LOA – Baby Steps That Snowball! and LOA: Getting Ready to Manifest the Best 2017 Possible!

2 Things People in Relationships Forget About that Lead to Disaster

As I began to wake up this morning and my dreary, sleepy eyes adjusted to my surrounds — a thought popped into my head.

In fact 2 thoughts managed to creep in there.

I wondered why I was having these thoughts — as they seemed totally unrelated to the happy dream I was having about a monkey, an umbrella and a packet of crisps — and then I remembered, it was writing day today and I guess the field of potential wanted you to hear this.

“You’re not in competition with your partner, you’re supposed to be a complimentary team.”

I’m going to jump right in and say that, in my experience (and I do feel somewhat qualified as hubby and I are celebrating 21 years of marriage this year — proving that I’m an applied romantic and not just a theoretical one!), there are 2 key expressions (that we often overlooked) that we need to show our partners without hesitation:

  1. Awe
  2. Compassion

Let’s take no.1

Awe — there’s a reason you chose your partner. What was it? Remind yourself of what makes you revere your partner. What brought about those butterflies in the beginning? For example: What attracted me to Michael was his raw talent, his kindness and tenderness, our shared sense of obscure humor, his ability to always be the container for me and hold a space when I’m venting and, of course, his dashing good looks don’t hurt either. Never let this spark of awe die out. You’re not in competition with your partner, you’re supposed to be a complimentary team.

Subscribe buttonCompassion — compassion covers a lot of things like empathy, understanding, non-judgement and love. It’s vital in a relationship because, at some point, one of you is going to go through something that the other needs to hold a space for. Sometimes this requires that you put your own problems aside for a moment to allow your partner to work things out. Too often I see people in relationships compete for who’s problem outweighs the other persons woes. For example: If your partner says he/she feels like he needs time out today cause he/she’s just worn out. Instead of throwing your toys out your cot because YOU’VE had a far worse week than him/her, rather allow him/her to rest without guilt or justification. Maybe this has interfered with your plans but try and see things from their perspective. Can you put your plans on the back-burner for now? 9/10 times you can. Another important tip is to learn how to listen without always having to give advice — try just being a sounding board for them (unless you really have something to offer of value).

Read related article: 5 Fundamental Steps to a Thriving Relationship

Often we slip into competition with our partner, as mentioned above, who’s had a worse day, who has more problems, who’s better at what — instead of seeing it in duality, try seeing your situation as a whole. How much appreciation do you have for this person in your life? A lot? Then tell them (awe). How much do you care for this person in your life? A lot? Then learn to identify when they are going through something difficult and help them through it without judgement or comparison (compassion).

If you do this and show the person in your life how much they mean to you — by giving them genuine compliments of appreciation and by showing them you truly care — you will improve and sustain your relationship exponentially.

Zombie Apocalypse: Avoid ‘Team Walking Dead’ with these Simple Tricks

What is Dopamine?

It’s the kick-butt chemical that charges the motivation/reward center of the brain and it could be the reason for the zombie apocalypse we find ourselves facing today.

Studies have now shown that excessive device use (smartphones, iPhones, iPads, etc) release this chemical. It’s no wonder that people get sweaty palms when threatened with having their smart phones taken away from them! It works in the same way as going ‘cold turkey’ in the world of narcotics.

When we’re addicted to checking our texts, feeds, e-mails, ‘likes’, etc we are feeding the continuous loop of dopamine which ends up having us in a carrot-donkey situation.

  • The more information we glean the more we want.
  • The more ‘likes’ our posts get, the more selfies we take. This attention-seeking activity finds youths (and adults alike) trying to find some kind of self-esteem in the number of ‘likes’ and comments they can clock up on various social media platforms (such as instagram and facebook).Y?

Society’s addiction to devices has become a disease.

Death by Selfie

Did you know that according to the Washington Post, 2015 saw at least 27 reported people die trying to take selfies in dangerous areas or situations? And, although the majority are of a younger age group 24 years and under, there were reports of older people in these statistics too. India is the country with the most reported ‘death by selfies’ in the world.

The race for fame and glory is on and everyone wants in on the action — well, at least it seems that way when you’re walking through a mall and most peoples noses seem to be glued to their screens. Take a look at this video clip:

Yeah, it’s funny and no, it’s not.

I took a trip to a mall last year (yip, I don’t get out much living out in the sticks and about 200km’s from the nearest shopping center) and was amazed that at least 70% of the people mulling about in the mall were on their devices — literally walking and surfing at the same time. I was amazed that no-one fell down the escalators!

This Sh*t is Real

We’re in big trouble, folks. Our addiction to these devices is gob-smacking. I value the internet and the opportunity it brings but I’m very aware of the insidious downside.

Try answer these questions honestly:

  • Are you neglecting hobbies you used to engage in (such as reading, drawing, writing or cooking) because you’re spending oodles of time on your phone?
  • Are you neglecting family or friends because you keep in touch over your apps, so you feel you don’t need to physically go and visit them?
  • Are you ignoring your immediate family because you’re too busy online to go outside and play ball with your kids or cook and eat a meal together whilst sharing your tales of the day?
  • Do you constantly check your phone for messages or spring into action to check it when it goes off?
  • Even worse, do you constantly check your phone or allow unimportant interruptions while you are visiting or meeting someone who’s taken the time out to be with you?
  • Do you feel you don’t have enough time in the day to do what you want to do but you have enough time to sit on your device checking your feeds every few minutes?
  • Do you break out into a sweat if you’re phone has been left behind somewhere, or the battery is dead and you’ve no instant way of recharging?

If you’ve answered yes to any of the above, it’s time for a reality check. I’m no angel, I constantly rein myself in and do the check. I often find I’ve fallen prey and try to realign myself to the below suggestion list. do we reclaim our power and take back control?

  • Consciously Limit Your Time — if you have to check your facebook feed or if, indeed, you run a business and need to post something — have a time limit. Anything from between 20 minutes (casual) to an hour (business). Any more than this is dangerous, in my point of view. You can get caught up in feeds and waste a lot of valuable time.
  • Walk in Nature — this is a combo-deal as you get fresh air and exercise. Nature and exercise also makes us feel less stressed, anxious or depressed. Ditch the phone though, make it a device free venture.
  • Garden — get in touch with the earth and grow things. Gardens give us hope for the future and make us happy. So what are you waiting for? Why not take on a fun project like growing your own vegetables? You don’t need your phone in the garden, put it down for a couple of hours and go acquaint yourself with the fresh outdoors! Read related article: Gardening Your Way to Zen
  • Read a Book — remember those hard-cased objects stuffed full of paper with black ink on every page? Get reading again, it’s character-building. Turn your phone to silent mode when you read — far less distracting.
  • Space to Relax — turn your device off and just zone out. Put your feet up and daydream or meditate. Get in touch with yourself and who you are — know thyself. Our devices stop us from being in the now and have us always looking for ‘stuff’ to occupy our minds. Give yourself time to unwind without being on call. Read related article: Harvard Scientists Found Something Surprising About People Who Meditate
  • Meet and Greet — make contact with real people (the bona fide, fleshy ones). Engage in real conversation with eye-to-eye contact and don’t forget to turn your phone off!
  • Get Cooking — make delicious home-cooked meals prepared with love. Invite people over and share in laughter, good food and company — nothing beats it!
  • Device Free Sleeping — don’t leave your phone next to your bed so it can ping all night long. Put it in the next room and have a device free sleep.

Doing these things might just save us from an insidious Zombie Apocalypse. What is your greatest pet peeve when it comes to our new age of technology?

Make Money Creating Beautiful Recycled Goodies Today!

Garbage for Energy!

I want to start this article off by giving Sweden a big pat on the back for being huge trend setters when it comes to effective recycled waste management. You can read more about their initiatives here: Sweden Is Recycling So Much Trash, It’s Running Out

Turning Trash into Treasure

I’m a big fan of upcycling and getting people to reuse things they would otherwise throw away (which either leaves our streets dirty, our oceans polluted, our tips full to brimming or — the lesser of the evils — recycled into something else via a recycling depot).

But how about actually earning an income selling your beautiful recycled wares? It’s cheap as you don’t have to lay out much money for materials and the finished products are amazing!

I started running a weekly craft class at the beginning of last year at our local youth upliftment center (called ‘Net vir Pret’ — Afrikaans for ‘Just for Fun’) here in South Africa and it’s been a great journey of discovery. Not only is it a pleasure working with these talented students from disadvantaged backgrounds but I’ve discovered loads about turning trash into treasure (picture to your right is my class making beads out of magazines)!

They are now selling their wares at our local market and this is how you can too!

Life’s All About Learning, Caring and Sharing

We’ve got a bit of a problem here in South Africa with litter. It’s a subject close to my heart ’cause, let’s face it, nobody thrives in an environment strewn with garbage. So, I wanted to offer these kids a fun way to, not only clean up the environment, but to make money with the crafty things they can do with it.

Pinterest was my saviour! You can check out some of the ideas I’ve collected on my board HERE.

I’ve been scrolling the many ideas on Pinterest, in my free moments, gathering a treasure trove of ideas to implement. I want to share these ideas that I’ve tried and tested with all you creatives out there wanting to make a bit of extra cash whilst letting the inner child out to play!

Read related article: 5 Amazing Super Powers You’ll Develop When You Get Creative

Below I’m going to share some of the crafty recycled tit-bits I’ve been making in my classes to give you some quick and easy ideas of how you can turn your garbage into gold. Not only can you sell these but you can give them as gifts or make useful things for around your own home.

Polystyrene and Magazines

These cards were made out of magazines and polystyrene.

Find a picture you like for the main focal point of the card and glue it to some polystyrene.

Then cut it out and glue to the card for a great looking raised effect.

These really look super in real life and a great way to impress friends and family at birthdays!

Bottles and Bottle Caps

Old soda, beer or wine bottles are great for making these vases or candle stick holders.

(Left photo) I apply my design with an acrylic glass paint tube — let that dry — and then fill in the color with acrylic paint. When that is dry I use an epoxy to glaze over the bottle (now you can safely hand wash it).

These are good sellers and make excellent gifts.

(Right photo) This project is done using any glass jar (this one happened to be an empty olive jar).

You glue the entire bottle with craft glue and then wrap twine or string around the bottle.

Then, to decorate, get some old bottle caps and cut out pictures
from magazines, old cards or wrapping paper — stick them inside the caps and glue them to your jar.

I use a bit of varnish or epoxy to glaze the pictures inside the bottle caps — it gives it a nice finishing touch.

The card is also made using bottle caps.

Magazine Craft

This is an old trick I learned when I was young — recycled magazine beads (see photo to your left).

This is done by cutting magazine pages into strips. The strip is done from the top to the bottom of the magazine page — start cutting at 2cm width and taper to a point.

Apply glue to the one side. Now take a match stick and — with the widest part of the strip — start rolling the strip onto the match stick. Keep guiding the strip towards the center as you are rolling to give the bulbous ‘bead’ shape.

You can dazzle your mates with the fabulous jewelry you can make with these super easy beads.

The white bracelet (also in the picture to your left) is made by braiding a plastic bag and then taking a glue gun and sealing the edges to form a bangle. It doesn’t get easier than that!

Plastic Bottles

This is by far my most favorite thing to make — flowers!

I stick these in my garden and use them in vases.

They are made by cutting a plastic soda bottle in half and then cutting leaf shapes and bending them to form a flower.

You use both sides of the bottle to accomplish this and then glue them together. I also use the bottle cap for the center of the flower. You practically use the entire bottle! How cool is that?

I then use acrylic paint or spray-paint to decorate.

That’s all the recycled stuff I’ve done to date. I hope I’ve given you some ideas about turning your trash into treasure!

Happy crafting!

Ditch the Resolution, Start a Revolution! Odyssey Digimag Issue 5 Now Out

image004It’s easy for us to make big plans for gargantuan change on New Year’s Eve but not so easy to stick with the program come January. Especially when, in the words of Robbie Burns, “the best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men gang aft a-gley” or, in plainer English, have a tendency to go slightly off the rails.

Resolutions can be monotonous affairs with ones inner struggle to become happier/healthier/or whatever your intention may be. Trouble is, the only resolution that’s going to work and stick is more of a revolution.

The definition of revolution is:

  1. A forcible overthrow of a government or social order, in favour of a new system.
  2. An instance of revolving.

I love the latter definition as we lean towards making these ‘resolutions’ at the end of an Earth’s revolution around the sun. Drop the ‘r’ and you’ve got evolution — even better! The definition of evolution is the growth, rise, expansion or advancement of something. Now we’re cooking!

Changing Perspectives

Let’s look at definition no. 1 — overthrowing the old, outworn structure to bring on a new, rejuvenated system. That’s really what resolutions are about.

Instead of making unreasonable vows to never eat carbs or ice-cream again (let’s face it, it’s a grim prospect) or to spend 3 hours a day at the gym — why not pledge to make a lifestyle change that  is gradual and attainable?

Like for instance: I’m going to make healthier lifestyle choices

The above statement doesn’t enforce depravation of any kind. It’s harder to break a new way of being if restrictions are not stringently placed upon it. Use this as your mantra every morning and become more mindful of what you’re putting in your mouth every meal-time — you’ll start to develop an awareness of healthier foods and you’ll begin making better choices on your sojourns down the aisles at your local grocer or market. Baby steps make strong foundations for change.

Go one step further and start a veggie garden or a vertical balcony garden. If you have absolutely no space — approach your local council or community representative and start a communal garden.

Start making better activity alternatives like taking your bicycle into town to buy that bunch of bananas for your fruit salad or climbing the stairs to your apartment instead of taking the lift. Carry lots of pure drinking water to wash away what the body doesn’t need and to keep you hydrated.

If it’s happiness you’re after start pledging to do more things that make you happy. Make a list of all the things you’d like to try, do or devote more time to. If you don’t have time, start affirming that you’ve got all the time in the world and then start cutting out hour-guzzling activities like social media and staring at a box with flashing pictures on it (as much fun as it is, 2 hours a day is ample time to spend watching the telly).

LOA: Getting Ready to Manifest the Best 2017 Possible!

loa-manifesting-a-great-2017

It has been an exciting and, at times, hair-pulling 9-year journey of Law of Attraction discovery for me. For the last 3 weeks, I have discussed the ups and downs and how to soldier on through.

You can recap on those blogs by clicking the links below (they are in order of release):

In this blog I want to simply give you my tried and tested keys to using the LOA in all its glory.

“Using the LOA is a life-long COMMITMENT. If you want to see the changes start to roll in, you’ve got to stick with the program!”

Please remember that:

  1. The Law is Impartial. Don’t think of it in terms of being fair or unfair, it just is. How you use it will determine your success.
  2. It’s not a competition. If you take longer than someone else to manifest something — don’t take it as a sign of defeat. Never give up!
  3. Always be 100% honest with yourself. If you’re not manifesting something, get real about how you feel about it — not just what you’re thinking and affirming. And question yourself if you’re taking appropriate action and using synchronicity to your best ability (read related artilce: Why Synchronicity Can Change Your Life and How Weird, Little Synchronicities Can Actually Be the Bomb!).

Now, let’s get to the juicy bits:

  1. Get clear on your thoughts. Negative thoughts will not manifest positive lives. You can brush up on your thoughts by tackling them one at a time. If you have a barrage of negative inner dialogue then just start by becoming aware of it. Then you can begin to filter them out one by one. It takes time and practice — persevere because it’s worth it! Every time a little gremlin thought tries to pay a visit to the watering hole to multiply, extinguish it by being aware that it doesn’t serve you and that you can change any negative thought stream into something positive and beneficial. For example: ‘I’m always tired, I feel terrible’ can instantly be changed to, ‘I am healthy and am going to align to feeling great, energetic and full of life’.
  2. Abracadabra — speak and it shall be done! Find out the real meaning of this magical word HERE. Verbalize your affirmations aloud, it gives them more vooma. You can also meditate on your goals and dreams — gift yourself with a really nice long lucid dream about what it would be like if you had what you’re asking for now.
  3. Feel ‘dem vibes. If you’ve got to fake it to make it then do it! If you’re not feeling abundant and you want to manifest wealth — visualize, daydream and project abundance as much as you can. Start out small, like trying to manifest $10 and then step it up and up and up a notch. As I mentioned in the last blog (READ HERE) you take baby steps until it snowballs. Inject as much feeling as you can into your affirmations — smile, giggle, dance and do what it takes to truly imbibe your desire. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to fake it to truly make something happen. Even if you have to tell a different story as to what’s really happening — do it (as long as it harms none)! For example: You hate where you live. Instead of reiterating to everyone you see how much you dislike your abode, rather talk about how happy you are in your space. Watch how things change in unexpected ways!
  4. Leave it to the LOA. You’ve got to relinquish (I can’t STRESS how important this is!) the how’s and what have you’s. Don’t try to control how you manifest something. Speak your desire and let the LOA take over. It will get you to your goal in the SUBSCRIBE icon 1quickest way possible. If you try to manipulate it, you will probably just delay or hamper your progress. For example: You want to get tickets to the game but you’re low on cash. You want your brother-in-law to give you his spare ticket, the one he mentioned he had. You ask the LOA to arrange that he gives you his spare. You focus on his ticket only (as if that were the only channel available). You didn’t realize he promised it to someone else and you just missed the ticket your neighbor would’ve freely given you because he couldn’t make it but had no idea you were interested in going. Moral: Just ask for the ticket not who and how you are going to get it.
  5. Speak as if it is, thank as if it is. When you think and verbalize an affirmation, phrase it in the present and with heartfelt gratitude. For example: ‘I want a car’ will only bring you more of the wanting of a car. I want is not a strong affirmation — it’s a transition word that brings perpetual longing. I AM or I HAVE are strong, manifesting words. ‘I have a great car’. ‘I love my new car’ and ‘I am so grateful for my new car!’ ‘Dem is manifesting words, buckaroo! Practice phrasing your mantra’s right and watch those dreams become reality! Try and be as succinct as possible — no room for airy-fairy, wafty wording. I verbalize out loud all the things I want to manifest when I do go for a walk. It’s a great way to keep the flame burning. There is a massive hill I hit the moment I leave my neighborhood, so that is my cue to start speaking my mantra’s and affirmations out loud. Try phrases like, ‘I am healthy’ or ‘I am abundant’. I also give thanks for all the wonderful things in my life after I’ve done my affirmations. Using the LOA is a life-long COMMITMENT. If you want to see the changes start to roll in, you’ve got to stick with the program! Be dedicated and, soon enough, using the LOA will be like brushing your teeth. It will become second nature.
  6. Get it down. Make a vision board and write down your goals on a regular basis. Sometimes we change our minds about what we want to manifest, so make sure you keep on top of it! I have a vision board I made at the beginning of 2016 and I’ve manifested 9 out of the 13 things I had on there so far. You should put your vision board somewhere you will see it on a daily basis — good places may include putting it on your fridge, bathroom mirror or computer desktop. Don’t see this as a chore — look at it as something exciting. I put small and large things on my vision board (from a dress I may want to an overseas holiday). Making goal lists is also a great way of decluttering your mind. When we feel we have no focus it may be because there’s too much going on upstairs. Making lists is a great way to get on paper what you want to see manifest and to hone in on what you truly want.

May your cup spiilleth over now, in 2017 and beyond!

Share the Love and Create More Abundance and Joy Worldwide!

When you master the LOA and start creating a life that you love, don’t forget to share the experience with others! Tell people about what you’re doing and how it’s working for you. Let them know what is possible.

Silently cast blessings of abundance on random people in the street, fling ‘safe passage’ affirmations at cars that pass you by on the road, pray for a peaceful world — let all your good thoughts be hooked upon the sky to start dowsing the flames of the old, fearful energy we have had for millennia.

No thought goes astray. Make them good thoughts.

LOA – Aligning with How You Are Feeling

Don’t Believe in the Law of Attraction?

I happen to believe — 100% — in the power of the LOA (I’ll be divulging, in more detail, about why I believe so vehemently in next week’s blog).

I believe in the LOA as much as I believe in the force of gravity. Some people say the LOA isn’t fair. Well, neither is the law of gravity if you’ve just been pushed out of a 10 story building.

But it’s one of the laws that govern the universe whether you like it or not. Problem is, if you don’t believe in it, so shall that be according to the law. If you believe that we are victims of circumstance, then that is what you will create.

We are all self-fulfilling prophecies.

Frustrations Over Injustice

I saw a question the other day that went something along the lines of ‘Why do starving children not manifest full bellies when, surely, all they are thinking about is food?’

The way I understand the LOA is that to merely think of something isn’t enough. You need to think, verbally affirm and FEEL it.

How can these poor children possibly feel full when their bodies are telling them they are starving?

The only feeling they are able to emit — in that dreadful position — is lack. When you are thinking of what you want but feeling the lack of it (and they have very little option to feel anything but) that is all you will be attracting.

It’s not fair but, that’s how I understand the LOA works — it is impartial just as gravity is impartial.

What Can We Do?

If the starving child got a good meal and was taught to anchor that feeling of having a full belly and keep emitting that thought pattern — then the LOA should respond by giving that child more food (or the sensation of being full or satiated).

Unfortunately, that child may never get the opportunity, however, I also believe in the power of our thoughts (or prayers/mantras/affirmations or whatever you feel comfortable calling it).

What you can do, besides physically going to help or supporting a charity that benefits a cause you feel drawn to, is pray/affirm or meditate on all the children in the world having full, content bellies.  Try and ground the affirmation by feeling that it is the truth — try to stay in that space for as long as possible.

You Can Help No Matter Where You Are

Same goes for animal abuse or anything else that vexes you about the world we live in — if you feel helpless then that sends out a negative vibration into the ether and, in my opinion, compounds the problem.

You can’t put out a fire by adding gasoline.

sub buttonTry to catch yourself every time you slip into despair over something that seems insurmountable and turn it around by sending out a positive affirmation (preferably verbally) or meditating on your positive mantra for at least 3 minutes.

Even if you don’t believe this will make a difference, you have to admit — it’s worth a try. If everyone did this it would expedite a positive energetic shift. If people were speaking and thinking good thoughts, we would be living in a different world.

Besides, what skin off your nose would it be to try something new? Do you really think naysaying or bitching is going to solve anything? Why not try something different then? I think it’s worth a shot.

“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”  — Albert Einstein

Just remember, it is not going to work if you are saying one thing and feeling the opposite. There is immense power in your thoughts and words.

4 Effective Ways to Say ‘No’

how-to-say-no

  • Are you the type of person who doesn’t like letting people down even when it doesn’t suit you?
  • Do you eventually end up letting yourself down — time after time — with your yes’s which should’ve been no’s?

Then this blurb is for YOU!

“Saying no doesn’t make you a horrible person — you are merely a person with healthy boundaries.”

People Pleasing 101

Take it from a people pleaser — it ain’t easy saying no…or is it? In my 40 odd years on this planet, I’ve only recently discovered it’s actually quite easy and painless to say no if a situation doesn’t suit you.

Most times, people move on and ask someone else or respect you for your honesty. Some people (the ones who need to realize the world doesn’t revolve around them and their needs) don’t appreciate no’s (these are the ones people pleaser’s are most afraid of).

Thing is, you don’t have to please everyone. If you are going against your grain in doing something you would rather not do — you have every right to say NO. Please read this article which explains more: Boundary Setting 101 — Target: Empaths

4 Phrases to Commit to Memory!

Without hurting or being unreasonable — you can actually decline a request.

There are 4 easy ways to say your no’s, here they are:

  1. ‘I’m sorry but I won’t be able to’ — and you NEVER have to justify why you can’t — you don’t have to give up voluntary disclosure. Don’t fall into the trap of rambling on and on about why you can’t. You simply can’t do it — your reasons are your own. If they ask why not, you can just say you are busy or have too much on your plate right now – finito.
  2. ‘I’ll have to think about it, I’ll get back to you’ — this can buy you some time to work out your succinct excuse and bow out without physical confrontation, if needs be.
  3. ‘I’m going to have to decline as I have plans for that day/I am busy that day’ — again, as in no. 1 — you don’t have to get graphic.
  4. If it’s about lending money then this one works a treat, ‘I have a strict policy about not lending money’. If they try to twist your arm, you can always say that you have been burnt in the past and will not be swayed. End of story.

Saying no doesn’t make you a horrible person — you are merely a person with healthy boundaries. When you can help someone out, do. Bear in mind that to do something against your true wishes is never going to send out a good vibration — for you or the other person.

2 Dire Growth Problems Our Youth Face

We Desperately Need to Abandon the ‘One Size Fits All’ Approach

Gardening Your Way to Zen

gardening-zen

It’s Time to Go Green!

  • Are you a gardener?
  • Do you like to be in nature?
  • Did you know it can be one of the most beneficial things you can do?

I was never really into gardening until we bought our first home. The garden (all 900m² of it!) was a bit of a wreck and there was (and is) much to be done.

“The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just on the body, but the soul.” — Alfred Austin

Two years down the line, hubby and I are still landscaping, planting and enjoying our time outdoors.

Instead of slipping into complete overwhelm at the task ahead, I took my father-in-laws advice and began small — doing one square meter at a time. Eating that elephant one bite at a time really worked and the benefits of seeing my garden now — in all it’s glory — are astounding!

6 Reasons to Get Your Shovel On

Not only does gardening give you a sense of:

  • accomplishment
  • joy
  • peace

But it also has several even more outstanding qualities in this helter skelter, fast-paced life we find ourselves fumbling in. Here are some of the main benefits:

  1. Creativity — you get to flex that creative muscle. You get to build garden beds and choose the right colors/plants for it. You get to plan and build water-features, walls, create bird-baths, pathways, stepping stones and a host of other fun things. I’ve started doing recycled garden projects too — you can find some great and easy ideas on Pinterest.
  2. Meditation — gardening is a great form of meditation — you don’t have to don a lotus position to meditate! Meditation can come in the form of weeding (weeding is like cleaning out your house/cupboards/garage — you get a great sense of relief as you declutter that lawn or veg patch), raking and pretty much any monotonous, mind-clearing garden activity. When you’re done clearing the yard — you can make a good, old-fashioned bonfire to burn the debris. There’s nothing more therapeutic than to have a cleansing, trans-inducing fire and watch those flames licking away at they sky. Why not write some new intentions/goals down on paper and offer them to the flames?
  3. Grounding — if and when you can, try garden barefoot or take your shoes off for a minute or two and stand on the grass. You connect with Mother Earth and it’s a great grounding exercise. Read more about grounding and its importance here: 8 Methods of Grounding and Connecting to the Earth’s Frequencies
  4. Exercise — gardening is an absolutely fantastic fitness activity. Heavy yard work (landscaping, moving rocks, hauling dirt) burns about 400-600 calories per hour. Raking and bagging leaves incinerates 350-450 calories per hour. General gardening like pulling weeds, planting flowers, etc. sears 200-400 calories per hour and mowing the lawn: 250-350 calories per hour. Not bad, eh?
  5. Zenning Out — when you’ve finished up your gardening and you relax in a deck chair with a cup of tea, there is a tremendous sense of ‘zen’ that washes over as you look out on your landscaping canvas of creation. You get to know all the creepy crawlies and birds in your space which gives you a real feeling of being in touch with nature and your surrounds. It get’s your heart chakra all riled up and pumping. Read related article: How to Use Your Heart Wisdom.
  6. Nourishment — gardening will not only nourish your soul, boost your vitamin D levels (if you’re lucky enough to have a bit of sun) and sense of well-being but can nourish your body too if you start a veg/fruit patch and/or a herb garden. There’s nothing better or more worth your time and effort than to start growing your own food. Revolution starts with everyone becoming self-sufficient in some form or another.

Don’t have a garden?

Start window box/balcony gardening. Here’s a great way to get you going — READ HERE and HERE. Or why not start a community garden? Go speak to your local representative and start your gardening revolution today!

You can even make use of your friends garden — they’ll love it if you come over and weed their garden! I’m forever inviting my friends to come and weed (haven’t had a taker yet though…don’t know why :/).

The Impartial Law: Trump vs LOA

trump-vs-loa-the-scream

“Let’s cut to the chase. Yes, I am considering a run for president. … Unlike candidates from the two major parties, my candidacy would not represent an exercise in career advancement. I am not a political pro trying to top off his resume. I am considering a run only because I am convinced the major parties have lost their way. The Republicans are captives of their right wing. The Democrats are captives of their left wing. I don’t hear anyone speaking for the working men and women in the center.”

— Trump, Wall Street Journal, Sept. 30, 1999

Blowing My Trumpet

Well, well, well…who could have predicted that presidential outcome?

I’m pretty much Switzerland when it came to choosing a ‘favorite’ — excuse me while I jump on a fence. To me there wasn’t really a choice, I wouldn’t have picked either (as I’m sure many American citizens felt too).

Read related article: Sorry Beyonce & Jay-Z, Susan Sarandon Isn’t Voting for Hillary Clinton and Here’s Why.

Watching the election news from my side of the globe (I’m South African, as most of you may not know) was riveting.

Even we South Africans — with our very own dubious, polygamist president (with his 4 wives, acquitted rape charges, literacy problems and corruption debarcles) hitting the news virtually every day with a variety of distasteful, scandalous incidents — felt sorry for the voters of the USA with that questionable selection of presidential candidates.

The Trump Card

However, we have to give the man credit (Trump not Zuma!). Since his first mumblings — back in the last decade of the millennium (and probably further back in Trump the Young’s own head) — he did assert that he wouldn’t have a problem being elected.

I smell a man with an extraordinary belief in himself (key to manifesting what you want) and ‘sky is the limit’ capabilities, who also affirms out loud what he’s going to do and how successful he will be at it.

What I’m trying to get at here is: the man is a walking, talking example of using the Law of Attraction!

I was going to write this weeks blog about the astonishing amount of manifestations I’ve been experiencing in my life using the LOA lately. I’ve been manifesting left, right, center and instantaneously too — it’s been way cool. The more you believe it works the more it works and near impossible things become totally believable.

I was going to give you all my examples of what’s been going on in my life just this last week — then I ran into a meme of Trump on my Facebook feed and stopped dead in my tracks.

All I saw was a prime example of how this law works — whether you’re a good person or a total asshole (I’m pointing no fingers – Switzerland here, remember?).

“The law of attraction is a law of nature. It is as impartial and impersonal as the law of gravity is.”

Rhonda Byrne

As we know, the LOA is impartial. It only reacts to the energy you are sending out via your thoughts, words, feelings and actions. Trump defied ALL odds and became the president of the USA!!! However, he planted seeds decades ago and never gave up. Kudos, Trump.

Wasn’t Hillary also affirming her presidency? Of course, look how close the elections were. Did she truly believe she was going to win? I can’t answer that — all we can do is look at what transpired.

Be the Inspiration You Seek (Odyssey Mag – Issue 4 – Out Now!)

be-the-inspiration-banner

There are simple yet effective habits that free-thinking, progressive people adopt to raise their vibration and stay in a place of joy, creativity, serenity and love. If you’re feeling lost or disconnected from your life purpose, passion and spirit, then Cherie Roe Dirksen may have some helpful tips to keep you pointed in the right direction as well as being an inspiration to others:

The Many Distractions of Modern Day Life

Many of us mere mortals find it difficult to keep our motivation in a constant, healthy flow — sometimes our muse takes a vacation to Ibiza and leaves us holding the fort back home without ink in our wells or paint in our palettes (or Chardonnay in our fridges).

It also doesn’t help when life throws constant distractions our way — the good, the bad and the downright despicable.

We tend to fall into the trap of circumnavigating what’s really important in lieu of catching that new mini series that everyone’s been talking about — and being sucked in for a season or six — or endlessly perusing sites and social media in an attempt to get nowhere in a slow and time-consuming manner.

Time is precious, use it shrewdly.

What does it take to be inspired?

If you feel like you’ve lost the plot and your inspiration levels have ground down to zero then there is a solar powered light at the end of your tunnel. There is great wisdom to be gleaned in the enlightened words of Lao Tzu who penned:

In dwelling, live close to the ground. In thinking, keep to the simple. In conflict, be fair and generous. In governing, don’t try to control. In work, do what you enjoy. In family life, be completely present.

Let’s take a look at the ways you can bring this concept into your life. You too can stay grounded and connected to source and that infinite supply of inspiration by:

  1. Feeling Your Spirit — when you tap into your innate, you’ll find the peace that dwells within. Engaging in that peace (through meditation, breath-work, yoga, prayer, being in nature, etc.) will bring about more and more harmony. Being in this space not only brings you closer to Source but it’s the breeding ground where all bodacious types of magic and inspiration are born.
  2. Paying Close Attention to the Natural World — when we ‘live close to the ground’ we engage and interact with Gaia — the spirit of this physical world we were born into. When we literally get dirty and immerse our feet in the soil, breathe in the sweet and fruity fragrance of the spring blossoms, dip our hands into a cool brook, study the busy activities of the birds up above and contemplate the majesty of a delicate flower — we step into awe and wonder at a system we cannot fully comprehend but are full of respect for. Paying very close attention to the natural kingdom can show us meaning and understanding in our own personal struggles. Become more aware when you are outdoors — look, listen, learn and drink in the beauty that surrounds and wants to interact with you.
  3. Seeing Divinity Everywhere and in Everything — it’s easy to forget that Source is omnipotent. When you remind yourself and experience the verity that the God-force is in every living thing, you can begin to shift your perspective to align with gratitude. Source is ready to commune with you — are you willing to receive the blessing?
  4. Aligning Your Thoughts with Spirit — our thoughts can steer us in the right or wrong direction. Don’t forget to check in with your innate, on occasion, to monitor if your feelings or gut instincts are in vibrational alignment with your spirit. If you’re veering onto a path that feels wrong, you can always change your destination by choosing new thoughts.

Change: One Thing You Can Rely On and Use to Your Advantage

advantage-of-change

“To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” — Winston Churchill

You guessed it, the only constant thing is this mortal coil is change. It’s the definitive dichotomy of our existence.

Now — seeing it’s the only thing you most certainly CAN rely on — let’s look at how we can use change to our benefit:

“If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” — Wayne Dyer

1. Perspective

When the earth around you shakes, the only thing you can do to keep your head above water is to adapt. When you allow yourself to see change as a prelude to something greater, you can learn how to cope with it more easily.

Changing the way you look at something will ultimately give you a bigger picture and more coping skills. Staying stuck in rigidity will only make you less flexible and fearful.

“Without a struggle, there can be no progress.”  — Frederick Douglass

2. Progress

When the earth was terraforming, it must have been an awesome sight to behold. Continents shifting, mountains being pushed up from the depths of the ocean and molten lava spewing out of the earths core to create new land. It must have been sheer chaos but without the changes the earth experienced, we would not have the beautiful planet we experience today.

Sometimes things seem harsh but, in the long run, can be leading to a more exquisite conclusion — something you couldn’t have expected in your dizziest daydreams.

Exercise your mind to embrace reformation and to expect the world around you to keep evolving to an even better state of existence than what you are experiencing now. When you do this, you are always laying seeds for a positive outcome.

“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” — George Bernard Shaw

And, finally:

“The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.” — Alan Watts

3. Prepare

Play with reshaping your environment — gracefully accept the dance and move with redirective flow. You can take small steps today to train yourself in accepting change such as:

  • Rearrange your home decor periodically,
  • experiment with your wardrobe,
  • shuffle things about on your office desk,
  • plan a new jogging route,
  • attempt a new zesty meal plan for the week or test out a different restaurant,
  • try something new this weekend instead of doing the same old same old — inject change into your daily life and break up stringent regimes.

The human race is fixated on routine and stability and, although those qualities sometimes have their place, we could do with learning to accept and even instigate transformation once in a while to build that flexibility muscle.

Be the master of change and see how life becomes easier and more joyful.

“You must take personal responsibility. You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself. That is something you have charge of.” — Jim Rohn

social-networking-header

The iPhone Generation or Zombie Apocalypse

I was listening to a radio program where a psychologist was talking about the problems this new generation face — one being a high rate of teen suicide due to lack of coping skills or ability to communicate with others.

The expectations (and most are fake or supremely fudged over) that the young adults of today face are insurmountable — the ‘look like this’, ‘have a body like that’, ‘look how happy we are’ statuses and the constant flood of societal dictation of what beauty, brains and normal is.

God forbid if you think for yourself, dress how you want, love your body for what it is or stand up for others who are being ridiculed by their peers and not follow this preordained trend.

Read related article:  9 Truths to Stop You From Caring What People Think

To the trained eye and savvy social media peruser, it can even be a difficult task to filter out the fake from the true. Can you then imagine how difficult it must be for a developing adolescent to figure out what’s going on? The pressure and high intensity of our current techie age must be daunting to an impressionable mind!

Calling it What it is…

We need to help guide the youth to trust their instincts, follow their dreams, think for themselves, question everything and be comfortable in their own skin.

We also have a duty to warn them of these 2 inherent dangers that are about to stunt their personal growth, as I see it:

  1. Lack of Humility/Modesty — this new social media age is breeding a monster called ‘selfies’. If I see another duck face on my Facebook feed I think I might take a long walk off a short plank. I fear, this syndrome has not only captivated the youth and teens — it has some adults in its firm and fierce-some grip too! To continually post photo’s of yourself (as taken by yourself and not to be confused with good ‘ol holiday snaps or ‘capturing the moment’ snaps as taken by others) on any social media platform is just darn-right vain. I have some acquaintances who do it several times a day and they’re adults! I can’t actually believe this kind of behavior and cringe when I see my whole feed taken up by fish faces. I don’t even think one a week is healthy (which reminds me of a status I saw: ‘I didn’t have time to take a selfie but you can rest assured that I still look fabulous!’…he he). Some people find ANY excuse to take a pic of themselves and don’t hesitate to hit the share button…again…and again. It shows either a massive ego at play or a very small one (lack of self confidence hence wanting constant affirmation of ones beauty/relevance). I saw a quote the other day that sums it up nicely: “Never before has a generation so diligently documented themselves accomplishing so little” (credit on photo: http://www.thefreethoughtproject.com). If we don’t nip this in the bud, we will be breeding a world full of egocentric individuals more focused on what other people think of them/their abilities instead of just getting on with the job quietly without pomp and ceremony (‘Dare, Do, Keep Silent’). Our children need to be made aware that to be humble in service to others and help our fellow human beings builds immense strong character — to be of service only to self whilst blowing your own trumpet creates none. Selfies could indeed paint a more grim picture than we might have imagined. Our children need to be taught that relevance, appropriateness and subtlety is key.
  2. Lack of One-on-One Communication — the other problem our youth face is not being able to effectively communicate with others. With faces firmly glued to screens for most of the day, it’s little wonder that this generation lacks proper social relations. This is more of a problem than it may appear on the surface. Of course, it’s annoying (and bloody rude) when people are constantly checking in on their phone apps whilst with you (read related article: Stop (Wi)Frying Yourself — Starting Today (Especially Family Units!) but the more inherent problem is when these youngsters really need help and to talk about their problems but have no skills to relay or open a dialogue to discuss their issues either with their parents, elders or peers. sub buttonCommunique with others predominantly via electronic devices leaves out the imperative one-on-one contact you get when corresponding in the flesh. You don’t get to develop your skills at body language, eye contact and a host of other things. This can lead to faulty judgement and/or complete lack of confidence when corresponding in the outside world. Our youth will need this kind of report when seeking employment or any other grown-uppy kind of thing and how are they possibly going to manage when they have no clue when it comes to physical interface?

We all like the comfort of having the world at our fingertips via our phones but we also need to be aware of the downside and curb excessive and unnecessary use — and that goes for all, young and old.

Limit your time on your phone and have a cut off point where you pack it away and spend quality time with your friends or family — phone free. Do this and you will be an example to your children (and/or other peoples children).

Feeling Down For No Reason?

Let’s cut to the chase — are you experiencing any of these symptoms:

  • drained of energy/feeling low,
  • always getting sick,
  • feeling depressed,
  • feeling drained after being with or talking to certain people,
  • lacking good sleep or feeling uneasy,
  • attracting negativity or negative people into your life,
  • feeling thwarted in your personal life or career?

Yes? You may be under psychic attack or have some kind of negative entity in your personal sphere/energetic field. Have no fear because help is at hand and you are not alone!

Many people experience this kind of phenomenon.

There can certainly be circumstances when one feels one has done everything to become more spiritual, self-aware, make better food choices, think good thoughts, meditate and, yet, some still feel stuck in a rut or experience severe blocks.

It can be really frustrating to hit a wall and not find any door to pass through. This obstruction could indeed be caused by a pesky or even insidious ‘space invader’ (alien/dark entity/not-so-alien-type-being) — a presence that has been stealing your chutzpah or just plain wreaking havoc in your life.

What Can You Do About It?

There are many energy healers who can help you to overcome such negative influences — such as the uplifting Margo Mateas (who was recently featured on Coast to Coast). Her site is called Freed By The Light and is well worth perusing.

However, if you feel you want to act now — here are some pointers to help you protect yourself and get your life back on track:

  • sub buttonDeclare that you are sovereign. Read more here: Here’s Your Crown — You Are Sovereign!
  • Protect yourself by envisaging a white, healthy, glowing, impenetrable aura. Do this in the morning and in the evening. Read related article: 12 Great Ways to Cleanse & Strengthen Your Aura
  • Cut any chords you may have with others. You may not even realize that you have an etheric chord binding you to someone (or many someones) — it’s never healthy to have these, even to people you love. Everyone must be God Sovereign, so these kinds of chords drain you/the other(s) of their energy and block you/other(s) from being in your entire power. Here is a simple, soothing and loving chord cutting exercise with Doreen Virtue: CLICK HERE TO DO MEDITATION.
  • Revoke/Release any soul contracts you may have made now and in the past that have you tethered. Sometimes we are not even conscious of these agreements either because they predate our current lives (ie. from past life experiences) or they are made unconsciously (ie. inviting negative/lower astral entities into your energy field via Ouija board/not knowing who or what you are summoning for help). I hope these tips help you to reclaim your divine vessel and space that you have 100% rights to!

How to Recognize a Dream Thief

dream-thief-header

Deepak Chopra implied in his book, The Book of Secrets (very good and worth a read!), that one should hold on to some dreams and desires and keep ones cards close to ones chest. In other words, there are some goals you should never share with others — they are personal and that kind of secret is okay.

At the time of reading this, I was an open book. I was the kind of person who tells everyone everything and doesn’t hold back. I trust people very easily so I didn’t quite get this at the time…I was soon to learn!

Devious Encounters of a Friendly Kind

On my journey of becoming more self aware and, naturally, becoming more aware of others — I encountered some people (disguised well, as friends and kindred spirits) who have proven Dr Chopra right.

Unfortunate as it is, there are folks out there who like to trample on peoples dreams and instead of being encouraging — they tend to quash your spirit.

They can do this outright (more obvious to spot) but some do this in a covert and subtly insidious manner. They can make you feel like they’re doing you a favor by ‘saving you from yourself’ when the reality is — they themselves are inept at attaining their goals so they can’t have you stealing the spotlight (even if they weren’t going to use it).

Spotting a Thief

Trouble is, they come in many shapes and sizes. They pose as friends (or even family members) but are cunning at disguising their true intentions which usually becomes more apparent when the green monster rears its head and you’re about to outshine them.

They work well in undermining your dreams in a sometimes very nice and polite way. It can be confusing when a friend or loved one subtly puts you or your dreams down in a way that seems like they’re only looking out for you. Before you know it your bonfire has been well and truly pissed on.

And you’re left holding the psychological pieces of the puzzle that was once your dream that now lays in pieces on the cold, dead coals.

Employing Armed Response and Protecting Your Dreams

It’s usually the softies that get crushed underfoot (I used to be one, so I know what goes through a people-pleaser’s self-doubting mind). We tend to take people at face value and trust that they have our best intentions at heart. We even think that other people probably know better than us.

I’m sorry to say that that bubble needs to be popped, the sooner the better!

It’s okay to walk away from people like this. I always felt guilty doing it, so I would stay in a friendship just to ‘keep the peace’. Thing is, I wasn’t keeping my own peace. Bottom line is:  it’s just not worth sacrificing your own inner peace for friendships like these.

I still like to adopt a ‘innocent until proven guilty‘ approach with people but I now have a well honed bullshit-o-meter. I’ve had too many experiences with borderline narcissists to know what one sounds like especially when my gut instinct is sounding alarm bells.

Things you can do to combat such dream thieves are to:

  1. Develop a good sense of inner discernment/gut feeling or instinct or whatever else you want to call it. Look out for people who hype themselves up whilst subtly putting you down. Stay far away from these people or at the very least (if they are unavoidable) do good aura protection mantras. Read more here: 15 Protection Tips That Keep Out Negative Energy
  2. Maintain a healthy ego/pride. This is in no way egotistical, it’s just having enough self love to have faith in your innate wisdom and to go ahead with any dreams or goals you want to pursue without letting other people dissuade you. Related article: Do You Feel Worthless? 2 Reasons Why You Need to Love YOUFrom the wisdom of Wayne Dyer: “Regardless of how absurd your inner callings might seem, they’re authentically yours. They don’t have to make sense to anyone else. The willingness to listen and act on your inspiration, independent of the opinions of others, is imperative.”

sub buttonKeeping Good Company

It goes without saying that if you associate with the inspired and the inspiring, you can’t go wrong. Positive people will lift your spirits and motivate you to push your own perceived limitations and boundaries.

You can’t lead an inspired life by hanging around people who are a constant source of negativity — that makes about as much sense as a bird tying weights to its wings to gain more height.

Your mom was right — sometimes ‘hanging out with the wrong sort‘ could be a make or break situation. It takes time, trial and error to know these things but it’s a lesson well worth learning.

Choose your company wisely!

one-size-fits-all

Getting Into a Tight Squeeze

“Truth is multi-faceted and can’t be squeezed into one or two concepts. We need to leave room for expansion especially for the things we cannot explain nor understand right now.”

We have a local store where I live that sells clothes. My husband bought a belt from them recently. He is a very slim chap and when he got home he was horrified to discover that the belt did not fit him.

I bought myself a smashing pair of leggings that said ‘one size fits all’. When I got home, they did indeed fit me except for one little detail — there was no room for a derriere! Comically, when I wear them, the front pulls up A-Okay but there is a major underpants revealing sag to the back end.

Perhaps in the location where these items were made, the bodies of the people are a tad bit smaller? Either that or my husband and I have entered megalithic proportions.

All jokes aside, this concept has been threatening me too many times for it not to have some underlying, sound metaphysical synchronous advice. As I sat yesterday — absorbing a rather dichotomous talk show that got me thinking — a little message popped into my head and said, ‘one size doesn’t fit all‘.

Throwing the Baby Out With the Bathwater

The above adage simply means to lose valuable ideas/things in an attempt to get rid of what is not wanted or,in other words, rejecting the essential along with the inessential.

For example: You may absolutely detest conspiracy theories and every time you catch a whiff of one, you dismiss it as utter nonsense without doing any research into the matter or checking in with your innate wisdom or gut instinct.

There is undoubtedly a lot of misinformation out there when it comes to conspiracy theories and there is certainly ample speculations to throw out. However, to lump them all as ridiculous, shields any endeavor at viewing something from a different perspective — even if doing that inevitably leads you to still toss the idea out.

When you do a little investigative work before kicking something to the curb, you have then covered your derriere instead of leaving it exposed! The ‘one size fits all’ has been sized up.

Bombshells and Tin Foil

The same could be applied to a lot of spiritual information out there.

Let’s face it, the internet is being bombarded with YouTube videos, articles (like this one *blush*), books, coaches, radio shows and all sorts of other ways we can communicate with others about our personal philosophical truths and existential theories about life, death and everything in between.

The problem arises with being ‘overloaded’ with information and, for want of a better phrase, not knowing your ass from your elbow.

There is so much information out there — a lot of it can be quite contradictory not only to others opinions but sometimes we find someone who contradicts their own thesis (albeit covertly) — I sometimes feel I need to don an aluminium hat to shield myself from a possible meltdown!

Take a Knee and FEEL Your Truth

On our path to ascension (or spiritual awakening or whatever else you want to call it) it’s only natural that we strive to know more and find out as much as we can — it can be an exciting trip down the rabbit hole to venture out into the world of the alternative — but never lose sight of the fact that intrinsically your soul already knows and all else is merely reminding you of that.

That’s why any teacher, guru or master usually proclaims that if anything they teach doesn’t resonate, you should not take it on board. This may be for many reasons, two being that:

  • this is not true for you or,
  • you are not ready to take it on board yet (have you ever read a spiritual book that didn’t gel with you at the time of reading? then you pick it up years later and…bingo! You hit the wisdom jackpot because you have now grown into your ears, so to speak)

We can easily flip from one article to the next, one talk show to the next — absorbing a plethora of energy and data — just remember to give yourself much needed time to integrate any new information.

This is where you can commune with your over-soul and glean your personal truth by sitting in stillness and asking for integration and clarification.

Gift yourself with time to mull things over because one size certainly does NOT fit all. Truth is multi-faceted and can’t be squeezed into one or two concepts. We need to leave room for expansion especially for the things we cannot explain or understand right now.

5 Tips for a Lasting Relationship

“Love is a two-way street constantly under construction.” — Carroll Bryant

Head Over Heels

20 years ago I married my school sweetheart. Yeah, we got married young (I was just about to turn 21 and he was 23) but we were head over heels in love and had been dating for over 4 years. We just knew it was the real deal and we were unstoppable.

We had many hurdles to overcome in our early years of marriage as we were still growing into our adulthood but, luckily, we survived the bumpy ride and the trying times made our connection even stronger.

Sometimes love alone doesn’t guarantee a lasting relationship — successful entanglement comprises of many things.

Read related article here: 5 Fundamental Steps to a Thriving Relationship

In the article above, I discussed 5 important steps to a healthy, loving partnership which covered:

  • communication
  • trust
  • excitement
  • ‘I love you’
  • ‘thank you’

I highly recommend you read the fluffy bits of this article as they are uber important if you want to nurture your happily ever after.

Taking the Sour with the Sweet

Relationships never stop growing and mutating — I learn something new about my partner every day (especially as we both work from home and are in each others space 24/7 — funny thing is, I wouldn’t have it any other way!). It’s exciting and can also be, at some times, eye-opening — as in ‘wow, I didn’t know that about you‘.

Yup, revelations still happen many years into a relationship.

There are always ups and downs — there’s no candy-coating that fact. We’re all growing and learning all of the time (with a bit of luck), it’s especially trying in these auspicious times as we quicken into a global spiritual awakening. Relationships are going through the ringer!

The real trick is to always try remember to view things from all relative perspectives. There are a few more points I’d like to pick over, things I’ve discovered over these 2 decades of marital bliss:

  1. Perception — this is a tricky little blighter as we are so used to seeing things through our own perspective. We must always remember that everyone has their own version of the truth and it pays to put yourself in someone else’s shoes every once in a while. You’ve got to honestly ask yourself if you are being fair in viewing someone or something from a multi-dimensional standpoint.
  2. ‘I’m Sorry’ — it’s a prudent practice to admit your mistakes — especially to your partner. It really sucks when you have a one-sided relationship with a know-it-all. Humility goes a long way and it strengthens that trust muscle for you in your partner. Never be too proud to say you’re sorry or to acknowledge that you may have stuffed up.
  3. Tolerance — there are junctions in a relationship where you may need to concede and ‘agree to disagree‘. Your partner is entitled to their opinion just as much as you are. No-one has to convert anyone else to their truth. Your real test in this situation is to have tolerance and non-judgment — it goes a long way and shows a sense of maturity that your partner will appreciate.
  4. Detachment — now this is a strange attribute to put in a discussion about relationships. Aren’t partnerships supposed to be about being attached? Yes and no. You work together as a team constantly but you must have respect for your partners privacy. Every person needs a bit of space to explore their own sense of self and that should be respected. Therefore, practice detachment every now and again with your partner in a loving manner. Allow them to have unquestionable space and time alone without feeling hurt or rejected or making them feel guilty. You may discover that you need this periodic freedom too. It is not healthy to be so attached to someone that you forget where you end and they begin. It may be a romantic notion in a novel or movie to be so inseparable that you’re two halves of one unit. In my experience, you need to be a complete unit and your partner needs to be a one too — there are no half measures! You both need to be whole and independent before you enter into co-dependency — a bit of a dichotomy at first but well understood when you enter a serious commitment.
  5. Patience — remember that old adage, ‘love is patient’? It’s true — when you love someone you will periodically need to exercise patience — let things unfold naturally without unnecessary force. That’s how you grow as a couple.

I hope these tips help you to step up your game and keep your relationships healthy and thriving!

Time to Take Your Life a Little Lighter

“It is bad to suppress laughter. It goes back down and spreads to your hips.”
– Fred Allen

We could all use a laugh every now and then but we can’t all carry our Monty Python DVD box set with us to work or have our funny bone tickled by Trevor Noah YouTube clips when the main honcho isn’t looking. This being said, you can print out some tasteful quotes and stick them to your desk when you feel you need to take a quick chuckle break.

To have a good belly wobble has been proven to reduce stress and boost your feel good frequency. Point is, you’ve got to get in a decent laugh every hour or so (with a bit of luck) and that’s no laughing matter! Laughter is serious business — you’re health is at risk if you don’t have a good guffaw on a regular basis (tell that one to the boss!).

On That Note

I’ve selected a smorgasbord of funny life quotes that ring absolutely true but are delightfully dichotomous and just plain pant-wetting. You’ll see what I mean…enjoy:

  1. sub buttonAlways remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else. — Margaret Mead
  2. Do not take life too seriously. You will never get out of it alive. — Elbert Hubbard
  3. People who think they know everything are a great annoyance to those of us who do. — Isaac Asimov
  4. If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn’t sit for a month. — Theodore Roosevelt
  5. I can resist everything except temptation. — Oscar Wilde
  6. I love mankind; it’s people I can’t stand. — Charles M. Schulz
  7. All generalizations are false, including this one. — Mark Twain
  8. It takes considerable knowledge just to realize the extent of your own ignorance. — Thomas Sowell
  9. Why do they call it rush hour when nothing moves? — Robin Williams
  10. Being negative only makes a difficult journey more difficult. You may be given a cactus, but you don’t have to sit on it. — Joyce Meyer

Hope you had a good giggle 😀

Could Depression and Suicide be Linked to this Parasite? 1 in 3 People Affected!

Indebted to Ted

I’m not one to promote fear-mongering (as I’m sure my title to this piece evoked some kind of startled reaction) but when I recently watched a TED talk by Ed Yong titled, ‘Zombie roaches and other parasite tales‘ I was stunned and felt compelled to share this with as many people that will listen (as TED talks normally galvanize us to do).

Ed Yong’s delivery only took 13 minutes and I highly recommend you watch — he is most entertainingly witty (video to follow blurb).

This really struck a chord with me as I know several people who have been through conventional and holistic medicine and therapies for their depression and nothing has helped. It is my belief that we hold the answers we seek regarding depression from within but, in this case, I’ll make an exception. There could indeed be an external cause for some types of depression.

Toxoplasma Gondii — Tales from the Litter Box

Toxoplasma Gondii is a single-celled protozoan that lives and breeds in cats — more specifically, in a cats gut — and it’s egg-like cells are emitted through cat poop.

Here’s where it gets even more shitty…

Zombie Apocalypse — Fact or Fiction?

It is estimated that 1/3 of the globes population have these parasites living in their heads!

Scientists speculate that this single-celled trouble-maker may indeed be affecting the brains of the infected and altering thoughts and behavior. They have even stipulated that ‘Toxo’ could be a possible explanation for our cultural differences in some instances.

Researchers from the Stanley Medical Research Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, suggest that mothers who have high levels of Toxoplasma Gondii during pregnancy, may be predisposed to giving birth to schizophrenic offspring.

Don’t take my word — read for yourself HERE.

Not a nice thought, eh? Especially as so many of us seem to be hosting this potent little parasite. Wait…there’s more!

Depressed or is Something Else Muddling Your Emotions?

Toxoplasma Gondii could very well be linked to neuroticism, depression and suicide.

The excerpt below is taken from the article Toxoplasma’s Dark Side: The Link Between Parasite and Suicide from Scientific America.

The link between neuroticism and suicide is well established, thus if the parasite does make people more neurotic, it’s not surprising that it influences rates of self-violence.

How does a parasite affect how we think? The authors suggest that our immune systemsub button may actually be to blame. When we are infected with a parasite like Toxoplasma gondii, our immune system goes on the offensive, producing a group of molecules called cytokines that activate various immune cell types. The trouble is, recent research has connected high levels of cytokines to depression and violent suicide attempts. The exact mechanism by which cytokines cause depression and other mental illnesses is poorly understood, but we do know they are able to pass the blood-brain barrier and alter neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine in the brain.”

Symptoms Can Include:

  • a high temperature (fever) of 38C (100.4F) or over.
  • aching muscles.
  • tiredness.
  • feeling sick.
  • sore throat.
  • swollen glands.

Natural Cures?

Thankfully, nature also holds the cure.

In this case there are several things you can take for Toxoplasma Gondii besides anti-biotics which include garlic, black walnut, organo oil and nutmeg essential oil.  Please read realted article: 5 Natural Remedies for Toxoplasmosis: A Common Parasitic Disease You Can Get from Your Cat

Straight From the Horses Ass Mouth

I’m a people-pleaser with strong boundary awareness.

It’s taken me years to weed out and recognize time-wasters and/or emotional vampires and nurture the relationships with the people I’m willing to give my attention to (read related article:5 Ways Energy Vampires Steal Your Time and Life-Force). My radar is set to blast out the moment I sense someone is taking a fat chance with my time and energy (I’ll discuss more, in a bit, about how you can sense them too).

People-pleasing is part of my nature and, to some extend, my upbringing. What I thought was being polite or well-mannered has gotten me into a plethora of icky, gooey manure at various stages of my life until I learnt about boundary setting.

Bottom line is: You’ve got to set dem boundaries, folks!

Advantage Takers

There are always going to be people who find every opportunity to take you for a ride — be it emotional, financial, energetic or just a cruise in their latest hot wheels (that kind is fine #justsaying).

I like wearing my rose-colored glasses and try to seek out the best in people. However, you’ve got to use your glass case too when the situation calls for it. Especially if you’re empathic…you’re like a moth to a flame for users.

What I’ve Learnt About Setting Firm, Strong Boundaries

Let me cut to the chase here — there are a few warning signs I want to share with you on how to implement your God-given right to protect yourself:

  • If you were raised to be polite and well mannered, it is still okay to say no or walk away from someone who is clearly using you. You can still be in your integrity — after all, there is such a thing as a calm and polite ‘no’.
  • It is equally okay to draw a line in the sand when you cannot extend help because you are busy — putting your own needs — or your family’s needs — aside for others is not always the solution. Use your discernment, of course, sometimes we do have to drop things in order to help someone out — just make sure you have the energy to give and the matter is of genuine importance.
  • Don’t care what people think of you if you say no or walk away from them in a case of you detecting energy vampirism or negativity. You have every right to protect yourself and they can think what they like about you — that’s their problem.
  • Psub buttonrotect yourself and your loved ones from people disguised as friends who bring you down. Even if you’ve been friends for ages — it’s okay to walk away at any given time when something or someone is not serving your highest good. Sometimes we let these relationships drag on forever because we think it might change or we feel uncomfortable ‘breaking it off’ but you can’t live your life and sacrifice your joy to please others. Those friends who do not resonate with us any longer will find other people who are on their frequency — just remember we are all on a path of learning and understanding so don’t deny them of their lessons by letting bad behavior slide for the sake of keeping the peace (who’s peace anyway? There is no such thing as one sided peace).
  • Your time and attention is valuabledon’t let other people use it like it isn’t. The moment your bullshitometer detects a disturbance in your vital force — set them boundaries, buckaroo! If someone is stringing you along, cut the chord.

Complacency: A Big Mistake Some Creatives Make

“The further you get away from yourself, the more challenging it is. Not to be in your comfort zone is great fun.”
~Benedict Cumberbatch

Whether you’re a rocket scientist or a hairdresser — if you think you’re in your groove and that’s where you’ll stay, you’ve got a big surprise a-coming.

There’s nothing wrong with being on top of your game (and leave room for evolution) but when you think you’ve accomplished all there is to achieve in your field or you’re in a creative comfort zone — you block vital expansive energy.

Change is the Only Constant

With change being the only thing you can rely on in this universe, it’s actually quite pleasant to luxuriate in the understanding that there is always room for growth, new opportunities and new avenues of expression.

When we limit ourselves through thinking we know it all we severely cut off essential learning curves that could catapult your talents to new heights — as you will see in the video below:

“Pushing the envelope of creative expansion breaks down any illusion of limitation. Once you step out of the box, infinity beckons your every whim. Bask in the knowledge that existence is infinite, as are all possibilities. We create in a field of pure energy potential.” ~ Excerpt from Creative Expression — How to Find Your Inspiration

Why We Detest Indifference (Odyssey, Issue 3 — Out Now!)

Issue 3My first published article in the fabulous holistic mag, Odyssey (Issue 3 2016), has just come out. For a taste of what you can find in there (and it’s all FREE), here is an excerpt from my article:

It’s one of the biggest pet hates in the world. it’s something most of us have come up against at some point in our lives or even deal with on a regular basis. it’s something that most flesh and blood human beings just cannot handle: being ignored!

Written by Cherie Roe Dirksen

I was astounded, back in 2006, when I watched that metaphysically mind-blasting documentary, ‘What the Bleep Do We Know!?’ Do you remember it? Its abstract concepts about reality and beyond begged me to stop and rethink my whole life — something I’m sure most viewers had to undertake to some degree.

What really struck a chord were the experiments on water by the now late Masaru Emoto — I was especially awed by the three bottles of rice trial.

In this particular test one bottle was marked ‘I love you’, one marked ‘I hate you’ and the third bottle was just ignored. In the experiment the one marked ‘I love you’ endured whilst the bottle labeled ‘I hate you’ decayed but not to the effect of the bottle that was disregarded completely — which was the most ill-affected jar as it started to rot first.

This test reiterated the widespread belief that even being hated is better than being unnoticed.

“Indifference and neglect often do much more damage than outright dislike.”– J.K.Rowling

You often find this with children – particularly in the case of the middle child (but not isolated to) who lacks the attention of the first born or ‘baby’ of the family. This child tends to strike out in a negative manner because even this type of behaviour is receiving a response from the parental figure albeit an undesirable reaction.

Why? — Because we humans tend to recoil at the thought of alienation more than anything. Loneliness or the fear of being alone is one of the top causes of depression.

Origins of the Effects of Aloofness

Some say the fear of indifference dates back to prehistoric man for the reason that when a member of the clan was shunned, it meant certain death to the individual. Ergo we all have a strong innate sense to stay alive.

However, barring our primitive instincts to survive, it’s just darn-right annoying to deal with people who display the traits of indifference — which is also disguised as apathy, disregard, insensitivity, disinterest, negligence, nonchalance, coldness or detachment. This is especially irksome when you’re trying your best to be in your integrity and treat others with the antithesis of indifference — such as attention, kindness, compassion, concern and interest.

I’m sure most of you know at least one person who never seems to have the common courtesy to reply to a message or e-mail, or lets you down frequently and/or doesn’t even bother to take the time out to let you know they’re going to be late or cancel an appointment — that friend or family member who only calls you when they need something. Does this behaviour sound familiar?

I say ‘behaviour’ because that’s what it is – don’t confuse a person’s actions for who they truly are. The cause for me outlining this is because someone very close to you may be doing this — someone you may love dearly. It could be a childhood friend, family member or, God forbid, your boss/colleague (someone you may have to see on a daily basis)! You may feel you can’t reciprocate and ignore these people indefinitely because at some point you still have to deal with them on a regular basis.

The Gift of Giving

“Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more.”
~H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

To All Those Loners Out There…

I was taught not to ask for things, it’s just how my parents were brought up and what they thought was right. I’m sure a lot of you can relate to that.

I’m now an adult who struggles to ask for things — I’ve got this, ‘I’ll do it myself’ attitude. It’s got me far in life — I’ve learnt a lot and can achieve almost anything I set my mind to — but not as far as I could have got had I just bitten the bullet and asked for help when I needed to.

Let’s face it, sometimes we hit rough spots on our journey and we could use an extra helping hand.

Related article: How To Ask For Help and Let Love In

In light of this new discover, I’ve been a bit more loquacious in areas where I feel I need a bit of help.

For instance: At the beginning of the year I started teaching a craft class at our local center for disadvantaged kids (called ‘Net vir Pret’ — Afrikaans for ‘Just for Fun’).

There was a ton of things I needed and the center provides the funds for me to get what I want for the classes but I have about 10 students, so I need quite a bit of stuff. This got me pondering — what would happen if I just put out, into cyberspace (aka on our towns local Facebook page and e-mail chain), that I needed crafty things — goodies that are lying about the house gathering dust?

So I did. I said that anything from beads, paint and cardboard to coloring pens and crayons would be most welcome.

Hold Onto Your Hats!

Well, as you can imagine, I got one hell of a response from the community and was collecting box after box of the most amazing craft supplies.

My class is ablaze with color, vitality and super things for the kids to do thanks to team spirit! People were SO willing to give that it truly warmed my heart.

Lessons in Life

Doing things for yourself can build character, strength, perseverance and all sorts of other desirable traits — however, there is nothing wrong with asking for a little boost when you need to. Especially when pooled effort has a ripple effect (i.e. benefits all).

The one thing I have learned from this experience is that most people love to give. When you don’t ask, you deny others of this gift. A lot of our locals wanted to be of service to the center but didn’t know what they could do to contribute — they were only too pleased that they could contribute in this way.

Related article: Are You Having Problems Receiving? You May be Interested to Know That it is Just as Important as Giving…

It is wonderful to receive but giving can also be one of the best feelings in the world! Don’t deny people the chance to step up to the plate if you honestly need assistance. Giving makes people feel useful.

Givers: I’m not talking about being someones doormat — you’ve got to decide for yourself whether something or someone is worthy of your giving.

Receivers: Don’t take advantage of people, that’s also not what this is about.

Why Anybody Can Be Creative

How to Not Fall into the Trap of Complacency

2 Signs That Inflexibility is Setting into Your Life Experience

2 Signs That Inflexibility is Setting into Your Life Experience

“The Universe is ever expanding and gives rise to new opportunities for creating and orchestrating planetary and galactic development. So, if the Universe is pushing ever on outward, why set boundaries for creativity on any level?

Never limit yourself because anything can be achieved if doubt is removed.

The Universe is not set — why should you be?”

~excerpt from ‘Creative Expression — How to find your inspiration’

The Boxes We Create

There are 2 main dowsers of our creative flame:

  1. Doubt
  2. Rigidity

1. Doubting Thomas

We all have experienced doubt on some level or other. When it comes to our own creative expansion, doubt is the little monster that comes to urinate on our freshly lit fires.

To have a little bit of doubt is natural, what isn’t natural is to let it win over in your life!

When we come up against doubt, we need to closely examine it — see if it’s just a threshold guardian that we have placed in our own way (hint: it usually is). Doubt is a stumbling block to growth, and it’s our job to overcome our uncertainties. We need to push out of any comfort zones we’ve created for ourselves.

Each time we are faced with self-doubt and overthrow it, we add another building block of strength and character to our personality.

Lesson from the Universe: Take the ‘ubt’ out of doubt and DO.

2. Rigid Ruthy

Rigidity is when we don’t move forward. We get stuck in our mental body (which almost always leads to us getting stiff in our physical body and unbending in our emotional body).

We tend to get jammed in:

  • thinking we know it all or we’re the best in our field,
  • thinking there is nothing more to learn or add to our experience or what we can offer others,
  • thinking that it’s all been done before and there’s nothing new anymore,
  • feeling way too comfortable where we are and not leaving any more room for personal growth.

Lesson from the Universe: I am limitless and ever expanding (macrocosm), so are you (microcosm).

Please watch the video below for a more in-depth and slightly peculiar look at what the universe can teach us about creative expression…

Why We Get Scared to Move Forward

In the video below, I take a look at how we can be our worst enemies when it comes to living to our fullest potential.

Self sabotage is more common than you may think. We are beings who are scared beyond belief at our own power.

Say what?

It’s true. A lot of us not only have a fear of failure but a fear of success too. It’s sometimes more comfortable to stay in the box and never have anyone (or ourselves) expect anything more of us. It’s just too much trouble to venture out and dare to be darn-right spectacular!

Maybe you fear:

  1. drawing too much attention to yourself (some people are taught to ‘keep it real’ or ‘play it small’)
  2. feeling that people will think you overly ambitious (after all, who do you think you are?)
  3. generally fearing what other people will say about you (read this related article:8 Tips on How to Stop Caring What Other People Think of You)
  4. worried you may not live up to your own expectation (how will you know if you don’t try? Isn’t it better to give it a go then to be left wondering?)
  5. or maybe you’re concerned about the added responsibility of success? But, truly, you came here to live a saucy life…the added responsibility is going to be a drop in the ocean compared to all the fun, thrills, escapades and blissing out you’re going to have to deal with (ah shucks, poor you!)

If you fall on your butt in the process have a good laugh and pick yourself up. There are so many avenues of adventure you can take so if one doesn’t work out, pick the next.

Watch the video…you’ll see what I mean 😉

I hope you enjoyed that. Next week I’ll be taking a look at the dangers of entropy and how you can avoid the pitfalls of degeneration.

Why You Need to Tap into Your Muchness for Self Confidence

Leap into Muchness

What is Muchness?

Muchness can be described in many ways. Here is a list that best describes what your muchness really encompasses:

  • greatness,
  • moxie,
  • spunk,
  • backbone,
  • adventuresomeness (yes, it is a real word!),
  • tenacity,
  • valor,
  • spirit,
  • braveness,
  • determination,
  • grit.

Makes you want to leap up off your chair and punch the air, right?

Trouble is, a lot of people tend to play it small, hide in the shadows, stick to what ‘works’, play it ‘safe’… generally die of boredom — I mean really!?!

Turn on Your Moxie and Tap into the Divine You

Why is it important to tap into your verve? It combats a variety of self-inflicted ailments, such as:

  • Jealousy — if you are all you can be and you strive to do your best in all you undertake, you’re just not going to have the vibration of jealousy enter your space — it won’t fit. You get jealous (in my experience) when you see someone doing or being something you have failed to accomplish (yet). Think about it. Being in your muchness will make you leap with joy when someone is doing something you want to achieve and is successful. Why, it’s letting you know that it can be done! Heck, maybe you could even do it better. Even if you’re jealous of your boyfriend commenting about the pretty lady sitting at the bar — you should agree with him if you think she’s pretty and not explode at him for looking at another one of God’s lovely creatures. Let’s be honest here, don’t we all ‘look’ at beauty regardless of what sex you are? I admire beauty in both men and women. If you are taking care of yourself and taking pride in your appearance, expressing your truth in everything you do (from your moral attitude to the clothes you wear), you’re investing in cleanliness and love your very unique and individual construct of protoplasm (aka your body) — you’re going to be in a space of feeling wholesome love for who you are and what you represent. Nothing is going to get in the way of how you feel about yourself and if someone can’t appreciate that about you…well, there’s the curb — use it!
  • Boredom — you can’t possible get bored when you are expressing all the many facets of your awesomeness. You are constantly bombarded with motivation and inspiration because you know that your sense of adventure will never be satiated. There’s too much to do, be, explore and create. You would need many lifetimes to fully encapsulate all you want to do and be here on Earth, but instead of getting overwhelmed you take action. You just know that talking the talk is empty but walking the walk is empowering and is the quickest way to fulfillment, bliss and happiness. You can just feel that you’re going to pop your clogs if you hear another person whining on about what they need or want to do but never do anything about it because you know the secret to a tasty, action-packed life is to DO.
  • Self-Worth Issues — you’re totally over your negative self-worth inner dialogue ’cause you’ve realized that you are glorious! You are perfect! You may have some perceived faults but you know they’re there for a reason and you use it to your advantage. You know that the many hiccups in life are a path to a more refined soul expansion and you are itching to tackle every one of them with your new-found knowledge. Why? Because you know that nothing crosses your path that you cannot handle or turn-around to your greater well-being. Your frequency is tuned into joy and growth and lack of self-worth just doesn’t even make sense anymore.

Throw caution to the wind and step into you muchness today! Exercise your personal brand of creative flare, stand strong in your truth and start loving this life, this body, this opportunity you came here to have.

Page 2 of ‘Creative Expression – How to find your inspiration…‘ tackles the fact that creativity comes in many shapes and forms. People who chime that they haven’t got a creative or artistic bone in their body seriously need to see this — I hope I can twist your arm about that.

I’m going to explore the many avenues creative expression can take — see if you can identify with them and nurture them in your day-to-day living.

When you tap into your own divine, unique form of creative expression, the joy and happiness with spill over and out of your own life to positively affect the lives of those around you.

For what is creativity but an enhancement and beautification of the life you came here to live?

  • Do you now recognize any creative traits within yourself?
  • Are you going to take them to the next level?
  • If you did connect the dots and have a secret passion lurking in the shadows waiting to see the light of day, will you be willing to gift yourself more time to be in that space of creative expression?

5 Simple Steps to Avoid a Burn-Out — No. 2 is a Must!

Burn Out Header

“The flame that burns twice as bright burns half as long” — Lao Tzu (Tao Te Ching)

As I was skimming through the enlightening pages of the Tao Te Ching my eyes fell upon the verse above.

In our modern, face-paced lives, we often fall prey to burning out. Stress and anxiety are growing — compacted by obligations, travel, deadlines, family, school activities, parenting, care-giving and the list goes on.

We try to squeeze in a yoga class at lunchtime or rush to the gym after work — perhaps take in a meditation on the train home — but even the list of what you must do to zen out can add to the stress!

That candle is blazing and we’ve lost the ability to just maintain a healthy flicker.

Here are 5 tips to ignite that wick into balance:

1.Keeping a Journal

I’m a huge advocate of keeping a journal.

Always keep one handy so you can jot down any ideas you may have that you don’t want to forget or get out what’s in your head, in general, so you can ‘tidy it up’ (schedule your time better in order to facilitate what must be done). This way you can also filter out what isn’t really important or what needs to take a back seat for now that can be readdressed later.

When you write down what’s bugging you (or things you still need to do), half of the stress is already alleviated and isn’t flurrying around upstairs, tap dancing on the floor-boards of your mind — driving you insane!

2. Keeping it Real

Right, now I’m talking to you — you know who you are. The person who has a million and one things to do and can’t find time for themselves!

There are a few simple questions you can ask yourself to keep it real. Here they are:

  1. Is what I’m doing necessary?
  2. Am I overloading my life with appointments, classes, engagements, work?
  3. Are all these ‘busy’ things that I think I need to do adding to my quality of life or taking away from it? Ask the same for your child — are all the extra classes they are taking making them happy or stressing them out? Can they pick 1 or 2 that they really excel at and want to do instead of 5?
  4. Are there any things I can let go of to give myself more time to just simply be?

I’ve spoken to parents of children whose schedules are so chock-a-block full of extra mural activities, PTA meetings and functions that it left my head spinning. Sometimes just dropping 1 or 2 things from their schedule can help them and you to function better. If, for instance, you drop a class like ‘painting/craft’ — you can always make time to do something creative with your child over the weekend (it will be a fun thing to do for you and your child will benefit from your company and attention).

I have also spoken with people in the corporate world whose routines and work hours are beyond ridiculous.

These ‘things’ that we think we must do are only choices. They are not set in concrete.

It Can Happen! Listen to this…

A close friend of mine, who worked in the corporate world for decades and was slowly killing herself through unreasonable work loads and shifts that extending into the early hours of the morning (and being on call over weekends), quit her job and is now living her dream!

She has just got back from a retreat/course in Mozambique where she has become a yoga teacher — something that she’s wanted to do for ages. She only thought she couldn’t do it when she had trapped herself in thinking that things were impossible.

Now she is making better choices.

I tried to convince her for years that her job was zapping the life from her but she didn’t want to see it at first. She had children to school/clothe/feed and mortgages to pay off — a reasonable argument but not without a solution.

  • What did she do when she quit her high paying job?

She started off slowly, doing things she enjoyed to do to make an income. She first started a home baking business and then went for her dream of becoming a yoga teacher. She down-scaled her home and sold off any excess debt incurring things.

  • Was she scared?

I’d say she was petrified but I think the thought of living an unfulfilled life scared her more.

She never had time before to enjoy the smaller things in life — watching sunsets, taking strolls on the beach with her dog or painting a picture.

3. Keeping it Simple

Life shouldn’t be just about mortgages, paying bills, keeping up with the Jones’s and dying. It needs to have the juicy things in there as well.

One of the biggest, juiciest things you could do for yourself to destress is to go BE IN NATURE. It is where our bliss is. It’s where our connection to Source is always available.

Related article: Science Proves What You Suspected: Walking in Nature is Good For Your Mental Health

The ‘busy-ness’ is not natural, the computers and electronics are not natural.

We can use them for certain things but don’t let them become your life, don’t let them take over. Most of the crankiness we experience is from sitting in front of a screen too long. It drains our very life force! Go be in nature if you want peace, happiness and bliss.

4. Know Your Limits!

Know where your cut off point is. If you’re stressed from a hard day at work, don’t come home and immediately swap your computer for a TV screen.

Take in some classical music, go for a walk around the neighborhood or in the park or even in your garden (if you have one), sip a glass of wine on your veranda and take in the sunset or the night sky — do something that will let you unwind naturally.

Watching TV may be something you think is relieving your stress but it is a form of zombification. It’s not a natural way to pacify your soul.

I’m not saying you can’t watch TV ever again. Just be more selective about what you watch, trim down how much time you sit in front of the box and try to take up a new activity like reading or painting instead of always reaching for the remote.

Remember: You can do most anything as long as it’s in balance.

Example: It’s okay to have an ice-cream cone every now and again — it can be a real treat. But when you have one or more a day, it’s no longer in balance and it is hardly a treat anymore.

5. Be Kind and Compassionate to Yourself

Don’t forget to include things like pampering yourself — whatever shape or form that may come in.

Take nice long, hot baths, get your kids to paint your toenails for you (if you’re a man, get them to give you a nice neck massage), take yourself and/or the family for picnics where iPhones are forbidden and give yourself guilt-free time and space to just sit and look at the wall if you want to (or read a book, enjoy your pets, think of 6 impossible things you can do tomorrow).

Ponder Time…

You don’t have to burn the candle at both ends or burn yourself out in this life. Find the balance, find the simplicity and find your key to a happy, natural, wholesome life.

If you feel you need to work hard to get the latest car, a grand house or the latest gadget/wardrobe then you may be sadly missing the point of life. You can still be rich and content in a log cabin driving a low cost reliable old skedonk and you’ll have far more time to enjoy the subtle pleasures in life that materialism may be robbing from you.

Think about it.

Burn out and into an early grave (possibly in vast amounts of debt) vs. living an abundant life your way NOW.

5 Super Easy Exercises to Creating a Positive Life!

Positive Thinking Banner

“In order to carry a positive action we must develop here a positive vision.” — Dalai Lama

Stepping Up to the Plate

You’re probably familiar with the saying ‘what you think you create’ but how can you seriously filter every bad thought? There is a way, I promise. But before we delve into the amazing powers each of us possess, we have to get one thing straight…

There’s only one person responsible for what you think and do and that’s YOU.

If the thought of being the creator of your reality scares the willies out of you, then read on…

The Freedom to Be Happy

Can you remember learning how to swim or ride a bike?  Can you see how determined you were to succeed because you knew the pay-off was going to be huge?

You may have started off with water-wings, splashing about aimlessly— gulping in water — or peddling your heart out whilst trying to maintain your balance even with the training wheels on!  But that child never gave up.

Then what came next once the wheels were removed?  Probably scrapes and bruises the first week but did that deter you?  Did you give up then?  Probably not.  You wanted to ride!  You were hell-bent on feeling the wind on your face and the freedom that would bring with it.

Same goes for swimming — gliding about in the water refreshes and frees your body of weight.  You knew that swimming was going to be the biggest trip ever!

Where am I going with this?  Your thoughts need training wheels/water-wings if you want to experience the same freedom from negative thought.  And here’s how you’re going to do it…

Getting Real Right NOW

Here are a few things you can start to do today to become more aware and proactive with your thoughts:

  • Morning Motivation — When you wake up, give yourself 5-10 minutes to think about what how you want to see this day play out.  See if you can catch any worrisome or negative thoughts before they take hold of the exercise.  Put up a STOP sign in your mind and gently kick those blighters to the curb.  Then bring your focus back to visualizing your positive day ahead.  Try to smile and see/feel yourself enjoying this bright new day.  Emotions back your thoughts into manifestation. Read related article: How Good Are You Out of Bed?
  • Mind Mangle Cleanse — During the day (if you are but a mere mortal) you will probably find yourself slipping into worry, blame, anger, despair and an array of other harmful mind banter.  You may even find that your head is throbbing because of all the distorted ‘mind mangling’ that’s going on up there.  Here’s  your chance to hold up that STOP sign again and see if you can look at things from a different perspective.  Most of what we worry about never comes to pass and most judgments/situations when seen from a different angle can evoke empathy instead of anger.  See if you can alchemize your thinking — in other words, find the treasure in the trash. Read related article: 3 Ways to Alchemize Chaos
  • Marrying the Mind — When you start to get a hold on your thought stream and just how much power you DO have over it, you can start to have a better relationship with your thinking.  You are now in control and you can focus your inner dialogue on what serves you instead of calling in all the unwanted experiences.  Start your affirmations off with a strong ‘I am…’.  For example ‘I am going to have a great day today’, ‘I am going to have a safe trip’, etc.  Try avoid the phrases ‘I desire’ or ‘I want’ because it only brings more desiring and wanting for the future.  When you use ‘I am’ it is in the present tense and is happening right now not in some future timeline.
  • Re-Member — We often get lost in ‘doing’ and not ‘being’.  Try to remember all the things that make you happy and bring you joy. When you smile the world smiles with you.  So, remember to feel gratitude for life, nature and the people that make your world spin.  Look at every magnificent dawn or sunset as a blessing, every fragrant flower or birdsong as a gift, every smile or hug as a gesture of love and draw on those experiences when you’re in a negative frame of mind.  See if you can remove yourself from a negative situation and sit under a tree or listen to some soothing music.  Seek out those small but beautiful moments in your life and embrace them.  Hold them close to your chest and bring them out when you need to.  It’s bound to make you smile. You can always alter your reality at any time.  Don’t forget that.  If you choose to stay in the gloom, then just know that ‘this too shall pass’.
  • Over and Out — At the end of the day, review what happened and see if you can pick out any situations that you have turned around in reality.  Did you manage to have a good day?  Did things turn out like you affirmed in the morning?  Or close to?  Or can you do better tomorrow?  Keep trying and if you do see results it’s going to make you more determined — just like that little tike on the bicycle, gearing up for the next day’s practice.  Because you know that practice makes perfect!

“You cannot have a positive life and a negative mind.” — Joyce Meyer

You will get a grip on your oh-so-powerful thought stream and you’ll be able to eventually steer those thoughts to benefit your life in ways that will make your head spin — in a good way!

Now it’s up to you to give yourself a reason to smile every day.

Plot Twist! 3 Things You Desperately Need to Know About Game Changes

Lookout Point by Cherie Roe Dirksen

A friend posted a quirky quote to my Facebook wall the other day — it read:

When something goes wrong in your life just yell, “Plot Twist!” and move on.

I had a good laugh and then a light-bulb went on in the old noggin — that’s totally true and a helluva great life strategy!

Here’s why:

  • It was Shakespeare who cited that all the worlds a stage and all the men and woman merely players. Bearing this in mind, we are all in a kind of giant theatrical production and can, at any point, be the actor, director, script writer or producer.
  • Being part of the cast and crew is great news because whenever there is a twist in the tale or the plot thickens, we can interpretatively work it out and move along with the other players — yes, a bit like a pantomime.

How Can We Rewrite Our Scripts to Better Suit Our Needs?

I can’t help you with absolutely every twist and turn — inevitably life is going to throw a curve-ball, surprise or unexpected hurdle in the path of every living player — all I can do is offer perspective.

Here are 3 things to contemplate when you come across a “Plot Twist”:

  1. sub buttonReason — I know a lot of people despise the old adage, ‘everything happens for  a reason’…but, really it does. You may not be able to see the end result from where you’re standing but there is a greater scheme at work in our lives. If you want to call that major playwright God or your Higher Self, be my guest, but if there’s one thing I’ve noted in my life, it’s when I think I know what’s best for me and try to control my destiny — I get a plot twist. And I don’t think it’s a form of punishment, not at all. From my experiences these ‘plot twists’ have always worked better for me than anything I could have tried to dream up for myself. It’s like a slipway to your destiny. When we try to control everything, we can be very shortsighted. The universe is trying to work with you to get you what you want quicker than you could ever attempt. So when we seem to hit a bump in the road, it could be a detour to a better situation even if it may not look that way at first. Sometimes it takes years to see the outcome of one of these ‘twists’.
  2. Rhyme — this is when you end with a sound that corresponds to another. Huh? Oh come on…I had to work rhyme into reason! But seriously, we can write the scripts of our lives to some extent. If you encounter a plot twist and you feel things are unraveling at the seams, write your own ending! Use the curve ball to add an interesting turn in your life. In other words, from this moment on, get down on paper how you want to see this specific ‘scene’ turn out. Then inject the outcome with feeling, like it’s already on DVD. Rewind and replay this episode in your mind knowing that the conclusion is something you really want and can feel.
  3. Playfulness — seeing you’re already in a play, you may as well be playful! Or, in other words, find the humor in your plot twist. There’s always something to laugh about, it may as well be our pickles as much as our pleasures. Nothing kills a bad mood more than laughing. When you can do this you can be lighthearted. When you’re lighthearted it’s easier to find the up in the down. There’s nothing wrong with being down for a while but at some point, one must make the effort to get back up — humor is always going to be your greatest ally.

Have I lost the plot completely? Gone round the twist? You’ll have to wait for the sequel!

The Secret Ingredient to Happiness

True Happiness

‘Love is what binds us, respect is what unites us. To have love and respect for all life forms guarantees you an excellent quality of life because you will be walking around in sheer reverence to all you come across. There will never be a dull or uninspired moment.’

You want to know what that tangy little secret ingredient is, right? You clicked on this article because you’re itching to find out if you own this substance — if it’s hiding in your pantry waiting to be shaken in to the soup of existence. You want that brilliant and fulfilling life, don’t you?

Well then, you may initially be disappointed to know that the secret is not going to be found in:

  • great looks (sorry…pouting for the next Instagram selfie just ain’t going to bring you lasting satisfaction),
  • money (money can’t buy you love — thanks Mr Lennon/McCartney for those words of wisdom),
  • stardom (celebrity is as celebrity does…you can have fame and be happy — if you possess the ingredient — but fame itself is barren without it),
  • recognition (it’s nice to be ‘noticed’ for your achievements but that still won’t fill the void).

While all the above attributes may bring temporary satisfaction, none of them will necessarily contribute to lasting joy.

That can only be found in one tasty ingredient.

But first let’s examine what could bring this entire planet into alignment (metaphysically speaking, that is).

What We Can Do NOW to Expedite Love in the World

In Lak’ech Ala K’in is a Mayan saying that simply translated means ‘I am another you‘ or ‘I am you, you are me.

This principle begs us to treat each other with appreciation — it asks us to see our sisters/brothers from other mothers as our own kin. It implores us to love all the children of the world as if they emerged from your own womb/seed. We need to rekindle the spark that respects everyone and everything’s right to life and a reverence for existence.

When you are able to love yourself (not to be mistaken with narcissism or selfishness), you naturally begin to love and respect others as well as every other form of life you encounter — including inanimate objects.

Huh?

Everything on this planet has a presence, from the rocks, plants and animals to the soil, worms and the very core of the earth itself.

Imagine a world where everyone had the exact same amount of love and respect for EVERY life form as they do for their own self (assuming that you have mastered the ability of self-love, that is).

‘Self-love is the source of all our other loves.’ — Pierre Corneille

Related article: Do You Feel Worthless? 2 Reasons Why You Need to Love YOU

But now we’re encroaching on the nitty-gritty…the ingredient!

Stocking Your Pantry With*Drumroll*…

The secret ingredient, self love.

‘Respect yourself and others will respect you.’ — Confucius

You can’t possibly expect other people to love you if you don’t love yourself. It may appear as if people love you but if you harbor resentment, self-hate or any kind of negative emotion towards yourself, you’re setting yourself up for huge pitfalls in all your other relationships.

I’ve heard people say that they can’t love themselves because of all their ‘imperfections’.

Just the word ‘imperfect’ states that I’m perfect.

You’ve got to learn to love all the ‘I’m Perfects’ in yourself. I’m not talking about empty affirmations, I’m talking about getting down deep and dirty and dusting out all the corners of your self. Ask yourself:

  1. What is it I don’t like about myself?
  2. Can I do anything about it?
  3. If yes, am I willing to change and start loving myself through the process?
  4. If not, can I learn to love the way I am instead of the way I think I ought to be?
  5. Is it society/family/friends/religion that prevents me from accepting myself?
  6. If none of the above existed would I feel happy with who I am?

‘Know Thyself.’ — Greek Proverb

You’ve got to mine yourself for these answers. Whatever you come up with, then ask yourself:

If this trait was in someone else (preferably someone you love — like your partner/child/favorite celebrity) would you still love them?

The answer, in my experience, is usually an emphatic ‘Yes!’. So, why don’t we give ourselves the same leeway?

Related article: Why Being Weird is Unusually Cool!

IMHO…Weird is Wonderful!

If you don’t love yourself for:

  • something you’ve done in the past then try to make amends for it and/or forgive yourself. If you find it difficult to forgive others then you may find that it’s because you are not forgiving yourself for something. If you find it easy to forgive others but not yourself, you need to question why you think you’re not worth it. Every single person is a creation of Source and, yes, that includes you! You need to embrace the inner divinity that is craving your love.
  • the way you look then try to remember that the most intriguing people are beautiful despite not having ‘model’ looks (beauty is in the eye of the beholder and in having moxy!). Sometimes what we consider hideous others consider unique and beguiling. Your personality and integrity is what is most attractive. Get the inside right and the outside will glow — even if you don’t look like J-Lo.
  • certain traits that you feel you can’t change. Remember that you can completely turn your life around if you think you can. If you feel you can’t change your actions or ways, you’re wrong. When you are aware of something within you that needs to be worked on, you can do or change anything! But remember to love yourself through the process.

Self love will change the world as we know it. Everything I’ve studied to date with regards to the human condition and self development has always led me back to self love. Without it we are lost. With it we are whole. With it, we can change the world.

I love you, you are worth it!

For those of you who have been following my recent ‘drawing to the classics’ videos, this latest one is quite unusual. For those who haven’t, you can recap on the previous blogs here:

Viva Vivaldi! Connecting Us to Intelligent Design Through Music (incl. Art Process Video)

In a nutshell: I’m trying to tap into transforming music into art and extracting subliminal messages behind the music we are drawn to.

I’ve been working on a series called ‘Rock Art‘ that takes rock music and dissects it onto canvas in the form of a mixed media painting. You can view that process HERE (see what The Beatles or Radiohead looks like through art — it’s a must see!).

However, in this series, I am tapping into the classics.

Enchanting Tchaikovsky…Not!

I have always been a big fan of Tchaikovsky and remember — as a young girl — prancing, pirouetting and pussy-footing about my home reenacting Swan Lake and The Nutcracker Suite.

So, what came out of this session was not quite what I expected. I thought it would be all candyfloss and unicorns.

I always try to go into these meditative art sessions with no preconceived ideas about what is going to transpire. In this case, I was a bit gobsmacked (you’ll see at the end of the video).

What I could extract from the emotions that came out (see video for full list) was that there was quite a patriarchal overtone. Perhaps, not in a negative way but just in a structured, designed, orderly fashion. Which is a more right-brained approach to life.

Patience as Layers Unfold

We often find ourselves in utter chaos where things seem to be helter-skelter and have no particular order or meaning at the time.

Tchaikovsky’s music gave me a sense of there being a kind of cosmic joke with this seeming disorder.  It’s as if the ‘designer’ of all things is teasing us with the chaos only to have it complete itself or run its course to utter perfection and structure.

Our job is to be patient. Ha ha…not a trait most of us possess in copious amounts!

Nevertheless, patience is the underlying key and is a muscle that we need to train in order to navigate the chaos. Only then will we get to the perfect design that lies at the end of that wickedly taunting but intriguing tunnel.

Enough of my babble…just watch and see for yourself. If you don’t want to sit through the whole art/drawing process then skip to 23 minutes where you can see the explanation to it all!

And don’t forget to download your free copy of the picture below the video — pop on some Tchaikovsky and do some color therapy 😀

I’d love to hear from you — what feelings or emotions does Tchaikovsky’s music invoke in you? Did you enjoy watching the process? Did the explanation resonate with you, if not, what came up for you?

How Good Are You Out of Bed?

Sunrise Art by Cherie Roe Dirksen

“I once had a rose named after me and I was very flattered. But I was not pleased to read the description in the catalogue: no good in a bed, but fine up against a wall.” — Eleanor Roosevelt

You may be good (or, in the above case, not) in bed but how good are you at rising? Right, now that I have your attention…

This is Not About Sex

Sorry, I just had to come clean upfront.

This is about whether or not you’re a morning or a mourning person. Are you the kind of bright-eyed, bushy-tailed homo-erectus? Or, like me, someone who just can’t get up at the crack of dawn for love nor money.

As I lay in bed, one fine morn, contemplating how I could motivate myself up and at ’em, I came across this blog just strolling across the ethers waiting to be plucked and materialized for your benefit (hell, even if you are the above-mentioned chirpy squirrels — you might get something out of this!).

3 Ways to Have You Leaping Out From Under the Covers!

This is how I sometimes manage to get my sorry derriere out of the plush wonders of my warm and cozy cot, should they work for you I would be most pleased:

  1. Get Happy — my fuzzy place has always been with music. If I can listen to music and dance about the house whilst cleaning the toilet, I’m happy. No music and I’m a miserable git. So, the first thing that motivates me out of bed is the thought of putting on my favourite song. Do you have a morning song?

“Forget your troubles and just get happy. You better chase all your cares away. Sing Hallelujah, come on, get happy”

  2. Get Plotting — Director, direct! Visualize, while your still under the blankets, what this day is going to look like. Inject it with good feelings, positive thought streams and tell yourself this is going to be a great day. Dang, it could very well be the best day of your life so far! Whatever you have to face today, affirm that everything will go smoothly and that you’re going to have loads of fun and reasons to laugh. Whenever I do this visualization technique, it absolutely affects how my day starts to unfold (for the better, I guarantee!).  You will start to see just what an incredibly powerful creator of your experience you are. 3. Get Dressed for Success! — Roxette hit the nail on the head. You can be as spiritual as punch but you’ve still got to get grooming. Why? You feel better when you look better. This is not as much a vanity thing as it is a common sense thing. You feel better when your house is clean and looks good, same goes for your appearance. If something you’re donning just doesn’t feel right, change! If you go about town all day feeling like a sausage that’s been squeezed into a pair of trousers, you’re not wearing the right pants! Don’t force a square into a round. Feeling good and clean about your appearance is vital to you stepping up to your day and saying, ‘booyah!’. I recently started gigging again and didn’t know what to wear on stage. I opted for a jeans and a t-shirt look at first but felt invisible. I then decided to bite the bullet and got togged up with jacket and boots and, boy, I felt sexy! The moment I stepped into that ‘role’ I felt on top of my game and people noticed too and started commenting on my look and performance. Dressing to how you feel does really make a difference.

Now it’s time to have that cuppa! 😉 Oh, and…

How Balanced Are You?

Bicycling Together by Cherie Roe Dirksen

Tipping the Scales

So, what is balance? It’s just the definition for an even distribution of something.  When you’re feeling out of kilter, it’s because you’re distribution is off whack. This can pertain to mind, body and spirit.

It sounds like a simple enough thing to get this so-called ‘balance’ in your life — it’s a no-brainer, right? Yes and no.

It can be simple enough. Example: ‘I’ve had too much pizza, tomorrow I’m only eating salad.’

That could be one way of bringing back equilibrium, in this case, to your body.

However, imbalance can creep up on you. Example: ‘I feel rotten…oh, maybe it’s because I’ve been on Pinterest (insert any other form of social media here) for 2 hours and my brain has turned to mush. I need to take a break and go potter in my garden.’

It can be darn right tough though with things that seem insurmountable and entrenched into the very fabric of our existence.

Example: ‘I work so much I haven’t got time for myself. It’s so hard to feel balanced.’ or ‘I know I smoke and drink too much, I feel it in my body but I don’t know what else to do to unwind.’

Trust in Your Innate Sense of Wisdom

A lot of the time our bodies/hearts whisper to us, hint at us, scream at us that something is wrong.

Our job is to listen.

We should endeavor to inject our awareness into our bodies, if there is discomfort — or into our hearts, if there is lack, sorrow or fear.

Here are some things you can do every day for more balance and harmony in your life:

  • Meditate — you know it’s good for you but do you ever get around to doing it? Meditation takes on many forms. You don’t have to sit in the lotus position to meditate ‘properly’ or go into transcendental states of consciousness for hours to achieve a quiet mind. Meditating could be to simply sit in your garden and listen to the birds or the wind. Meditating is something personal. Find the brand that works for you. Read more here: 5 Easy Steps to Meditating (No Lotus Position Required)
  • Spin — Barbara Marciniak spoke of this in her book ‘Bringers of the Dawn— Teachings from the Pleiadians’. It’s a practice I often use to get myself on track. It apparently enhances the spinning of your chakra system. The technique is to hold out your thumb and focus on that as you spin, slowly at first, 33 times — from left to right. Then you anchor yourself at the end by bringing your palms together, at chest level, and press whilst keeping your eyes open. You can read more about the exact process HERE.
  • Breath work — yup, we breathe automatically so why must we focus on that? Because most of us breathe very shallowly. Our bodies actually need focused, deep breathing to function at optimus prime. You can read more about that here:  What is Your Quality of Breath — Did You Know You Could Be Starving Your Body of Oxygen?
  • Eat Right — you are what you eat and all that blah blah…yeah, I know you’ve heard it all before but, seriously, it’s the truth! You’ve got to get real about what you put in that divine little temple of yours. It is in my personal opinion that you can still enjoy those ‘naughty’ things in life every once in a while, as long as you exercise (literally) self-control. I enjoy a glass of wine or a beer every now and again but let’s face it, if it goes out of balance and one drink becomes 5 you’re going to topple your equipoise. Too much of any one thing — even if it’s healthy — is not balanced. See what happens if you eat too many carrots…I dare you (*disclaimer: no don’t)! My husbands aunt once went on a carrot bender (I’m telling the truth!) and she turned orange. I kid you not.
  • Move — your body has muscles ergo it was made for movement. Walk, run, skip, hop, dance the fandango…do whatever it takes to build up a little sweat each day and keep that bod in tip top shape. Exercise really helps to maintain a healthy balance in your life. And if you work all day and are too tired to workout then take the stairs at the office, take a walk to the nearest park at lunchtime. There’s always something you can do to get active.
  • Watch Your Thoughts — a balanced body needs a balanced mind. You can eat organic, breathe deeply until you see cows come clambering home, exercise every God-given day, spin your butt off and yoga yourself into a pretzel to no avail if your headspace ain’t stepping up to the plate. If you find yourself on a negative downstream of thoughts, see if you can stop yourself and try to bring balance to the inner dialogue by counterbalancing the worry. In other words, start visualizing what you want to see happen and then let it go. Read more about how to here: 10 Ways To Transition From A Negative To A Positive Thinker

Try these things out and see how it makes you feel. If you can’t do every point — don’t sweat it! Do what you can.

Balance is something we all work at all the time. The key is to regularly scan ourselves for imbalance and to keep gifting ourselves with more quiet time.

Exploring Music and Tapping Into Meaning

In my previous video blogs I explored a haunting tune from Bach (view HERE) and the enticing sounds of Debussy (view HERE) through drawing to their music and seeing what emerges onto my whiteboard (including the feelings that arose).

Today, I immersed myself in the blooming, fresh sounds of Antonio Lucio Vivaldi — the Venetian Baroque composer from the 18th century.

There were several keywords that came up while I was drawing to the music:

  • Growth — the feeling of outward expansion and unstoppable life.
  • Portals — this was a strange keyword to come up but, in hindsight, I was drawing a lot of spirals which were purported to be ancient markers for portals or star-gates/wormholes. Read more about that HERE.
  • Sacred Geometrygeometric shapes and proportions found in nature believed to be the work of God. Also associated with Platonic solids and the golden means ratio (divine proportion). Related article: The Golden Ratio: Phi, 1.618
  • Flower of Life — otherwise dubbed ‘the pattern of creation’.

So, you can see there is a definite theme running here. The overall feeling I got from Vivaldi’s music was a connection to the intelligent design of the universe.

What is intelligent design?

Intelligent design is a pseudoscientific theory that some aspects of the universe and living things are best explained by an intelligent source rather than an undirected form of natural selection (as preposed by Charles Darwin).

It’s a buzz word that people use to replace the outworn version of ‘God’. I quite like it and it gives some relief to scientists who’d rather not stick their neck on the chopping block by using the G word.

It’s acronym is ID, which tickles my fancy as the word ‘id’ describes the part of the mind in which innate and instinctive impulses are manifested.

Feeling Alone in the Universe?

To conclude this prequel to my video: My gut was telling me — whilst in the process of making the video below — that if you’re feeling alone, losing your faith or connection to spirit or Source, pop on some Vivaldi! Or just go look at a flower — the Creator can be found everywhere in nature if you’re still enough and allow yourself to view the magnificence of creation.

“The law of attraction is infallible, and every single person is getting what they are asking for, even though most of the time each person is not aware that they are asking for what they don’t want. There is such absolute beauty in the law, which is so responsive and giving in every single moment so that we can experience our lives.

The law never changes — we must learn how to live in harmony with the law. That is the greatest task for every single human being.”

Upside Down and Inside Out

Yesterday I was putting my video blog together. It’s usually a wee bit of a task and I’m prepared for that. I spent hours writing the forward blog and then got to editing and splicing the footage I’d filmed the day before.

For some strange reason, the footage came out sideways. No big deal as you can rotate it in the movie editor. My eyebrow raised. Was there some sort of hidden message in this for me today? (some of you may understand this form of questioning every nuance that is happening to you as some sort of inner reflection trying to out itself. For those who don’t know what I’m talking about — just put it down to certain madness).

I pieced the whole thing together and exported the video for YouTube. Uh…the whole thing was totally out of sync.

I went back to my editing dashboard — everything there was in total sync. Did the whole thing again. Still out of sync. I did it 3 times to no avail. My blood was boiling as I’m about to go on a trip today until Sunday and I simply don’t have time for these games.

I decided to give it a break and start my newsletter which was also due out yesterday. Another mammoth task that I don’t particularly look forward to (perhaps a clue?).

After hours of working on this, it was time to hit the send button. But what was this? My whole newsletter was suddenly out of alignment. There were boxes and sidebars in erroneous places! Oh lord!

Time to Stop, Drop and Reassess

Okay, at this point I was past mild panic and was heading straight for losing it completely. My husband reminded me to ‘take a knee’ before I blew a fuse. So I went to lie down to try and quiet the old noggin.

As I was looking up at the ceiling trying to do my breathing exercises (through flared and excited nostrils, I might add!), it hit me.

  1. I was in a hurry — I was attracting anxiety
  2. I was putting unnecessary duress on myself by demanding I complete these tasks today — attracting more stress and anxiety

Well, problem solved (almost). I was putting out general chaos and that’s what I was getting. Everything was topsy turvy thanks to me and my energy.

I had to stop and calm down before understanding what and why I was attracting mischief into my day. When I came to peace with my odd manifestations, I felt more in flow and in harmony with my projections. I accepted them and began to change the energy and move on.

After my epiphany, I sat down with my diary. I still had a couple of hours this morning to write a new blog (*a-hem*…this one), so, I reassigned the task and set my alarm to go off an hour early.

I already felt better. I had to still pack and get things ready for my trip but I did that with ease.

A Small Titbit About Synchronicity

I’m going to end this off by saying that the quote I started with came to me tsubcribe buttonhrough sheer synchronicity.

I was pondering, whilst packing, what I should write the ‘new’ blog about. I thought that maybe I should be honest and write about my little meltdown (but I thought perhaps my fiasco had the potential to bore you to tears).

I strode over to my bookshelf and ‘The Secret Daily Teachings’ lurched out at me. I picked it up and randomly opened it at the quote at the top of this article.

After reading it I started to chuckle. It was pretty much what happened to me during the course of the day and it looked like my meltdown was the very thing I needed to share with all of you upon this very morn.

I’d like to think that there must be someone out there who needed to hear this. If not, you’ve just wasted a good few minutes reading about superfluous misadventure.

Loving the Alien

My earliest memory of the legendary David Robert Jones was when my mother bought a record of his and I saw the cover (I think it was ‘Space Oddity’). I was 9 years old and fell madly in love with this androgynous, mysterious, beautiful, outrageous looking creature.

He was the poetic and rebellious inspiration I needed in my teens and I never outgrew his innovative and ground-breaking style of music. He inspired me to write, to be a musician and to be insanely weird…and proud of it.

Under Pressure

I have been practicing madly this week for a David Bowie tribute concert that I have agreed to do (I play the bass guitar) next Saturday in Cape Town. Within a couple of weeks of the show being announced it was sold out — a real testament to the popularity of this British musical icon even in the Southern most tip of Africa!

I had the privilege of seeing him live in action at Wembley Stadium, London, when he was on his ‘Reality’ tour. He was well into his 60’s at the time but his performance was monumental — an evening I shall never forget.

Rehearsing for this gig has given me a new-found respect for Mr. Bowie as his songs are some of the most complicated and difficult I’ve ever attempted. But what speaks to the soul must be pursued.

So, having Bowie on my mind — I’d like to share some zany quotes from the Thin White Duke:

  1. “I’m in awe of the universe, but I don’t necessarily believe there’s an intelligence or agent behind it. I do have a passion for the visual in religious rituals, though, even though they may be completely empty and bereft of substance. The incense is powerful and provocative, whether Buddhist or Catholic.”
  2. “I always had a repulsive need to be something more than human. I felt very puny as a human. I thought, ‘F*ck that. I want to be a superhuman.”
  3. “I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring.”
  4. “On the other hand, what I like my music to do to me is awaken the ghosts inside of me. Not the demons, you understand, but the ghosts.”
  5. “Don’t you love the Oxford Dictionary? When I first read it, I thought it was a really really long poem about everything.”
  6. “Speak in extremes, it’ll save you time. ”
  7. “I’m just an individual who doesn’t feel that I need to have somebody qualify my work in any particular way. I’m working for me.”
  8. “I’m a real self-educated kind of guy. I read voraciously. Every book I ever bought, I have. I can’t throw it away. It’s physically impossible to leave my hand! Some of them are in warehouses. I’ve got a library that I keep the ones I really really like. I look around my library some nights and I do these terrible things to myself–I count up the books and think, how long I might have to live and think, ‘F#ck, I can’t read two-thirds of these books.’ It overwhelms me with sadness.”
  9. When asked what the quality you most like in a man? “The ability to return books.”
  10. “You can neither win nor lose if you don’t run the race.”

Okay, no. 8 and 9 aren’t exactly THAT spiritual but I liked them anyway. Anyone with a fetish for reading and books would understand the hair-pulling anxiety of lending books.

I love no. 7 because we should all strive to please ourselves and stop trying to placate those around us forsaking our own needs and creativity. That should not be taken as a selfish thing but a self love thing. When you’re happy, you’re going to exude joy and that will affect all of those in your sphere.

Thank you, David Bowie, for all the inspiration and boundary pushing!
