Can We Really Live Without Money? The Answer May Surprise You…

Nature Banner by Cherie Roe DirksenBalls to Capitalism!

I’ve been really doing a lot of ‘couch pondering’ (where you just sit on the couch staring at the ceiling for hours…thinking) about that wretched topic — money.  God, how I love having it and, boy, how I despise the need for it.

What a stinking dichotomy!

I work for myself and, as many of you who do the same may know, it’s great and liberating to be on your own schedule but it sure has its lows — mainly financial.  By the time the end of the month starts rearing its bill-paying head, I have worked myself into a froth over the hows and whens of imminent account deductions.

Why can’t we all just have a gazillion dollars in the bank and live our lives the way we were meant to — in joy and creative splendor?!

Wishful Thinking or Reality?

I suppose one has to take another look at abundance and wealth to pop this little blister of a conundrum.

Is it really all about money?

Now don’t just yell out ‘YES!’.  What if we could really create abundance without the price tag?

When I set my intentions for this year (this article was written in 2014) and created my list of 7 things I wanted (read about how you can start your own list here:  2014 — The Year to Sculpt Your Life!) — I managed to procure 3 things on the list without spending a dime.

It was through people’s generosity and thoughtfulness that I was able to manifest a few luxury items I would have otherwise thought I could only obtain through ‘buying’.

It made me think.

Sustainable Living is Thriving!

I am also in the process of moving from the city into the countryside.  We are doing this because (a) property is SO much cheaper out there and (b) we want to start growing our own food and need land, etc with the possibility of a few rain-water tanks and solar panels.

Just making this move will cut our bills in half — I’m being deadly serious!  I simply can’t wait for the off, as I’m sure you can well imagine.

But not only will this help us to economize but it will also allow us to reduce our carbon footprint and consumerism.  I strangely enough, have a feeling of immense abundance when I look at it that way.  It doesn’t involve abundance money can buy but wealth of spirit and a heart-centered gratification.

Instead of the typical scenario of society telling us that wealth is in accumulating more and more, the truth is that cutting down and needing less provides more abundance in your life — just not in that stereotypical way.

Get your head out of your bank account and into the breeze of that freshly mown lawn!

Do You Need Something?

If you do need something — be it a new dining room suite or tin of apricots — set your intention and put it out there.  How?

  • By talking to other people about what you want (not hounding them for hand-outs but simply mentioning it if it’s appropriate to do so — you never know who you might be talking to),
  • writing your desires down on paper and reading them out to yourself every day,
  • letting go of how you are going to get it, just know that it will happen in its own way,
  • be vigilant and on the look-out for any synchronicities (read more on synchronicity here: Why Synchronicity Can Change Your Life) or signs that may bring you closer to your desire,
  • practice gratitude and
  • give where you can (generosity tends to have a boomerang effect).

Solving the Need for Money — What is the Answer?

Do these suggestions solve the need to live without money?  No, but it’s a start.

The more you put these things into practice, the more you will start seeing how we, as a more heart-centered community, can pull together and get what we all want with little or no money passing hands.

It can happen through:

  • Bartering
  • Generosity
  • Donation
  • Service/Expertise Swapping
  • Thinking Out of the Box

Make sure you are open to receive as well as to give.

Can We Live Without Dosh?

Even though we can do a lot for ourselves without money — there is still a lot of things we do need money for in order to live in modern society.  Just having no internet access alone would bring my foundations crumbling down.

I don’t have all the answers as to how we can live with less money but I do know that if we all pull together and brainstorm ways, a moneyless society could be possible in the near future.

The answer is out there, waiting for us to catch up with it.

4 Things to Get You Started

For now, all the advice I can offer you if you are having financial woes, is to put your intentions out there and think of ways you can experience abundance without money.

There are loads of things you can do or experience to make you feel extremely wealthy.

Here are a few tips:

  • Make a gratitude list of things you have (the roof over your head, your health, a full belly, the love of your cat/dog or the warm bed you sleep in at night).
  • Go be in nature — when you give yourself time and space to relax and sit on some grass or walk on the beach, you will feel the abundance of the Earth.  Lack is only a by-product of what our current society dictates to us that we must have.  Nature has everything we need and to reconnect with the wealth of the planet is a very grounding activity.  This is your planet!  You were born here and you are a citizen of the globe — your abundance lies all around you and not only in coins, printed paper or digital numbers.
  • Call on the never-ending supply of love that is all around you.  You are loved, no matter who you are.  Never forget that.  If you are reading this and thinking, ‘no-one loves me’ then you are wrong — I love you and I’m not the only one.  Feel the love that is yours to tap into whenever you are feeling low and alone.
  • Keep reminding yourself of what you would be doing right now if money was not an issue or required.  Whatever that is, focus on it and set your intention to live that way.

Please let me know if you are having any success trying to live with little or no money.  What is your take on this topic?  Leave your comments below.

UPDATE: I have since made my move to the country and I’m loving it! I still use the above principles and I not only manifest money but also ways to get the things I want and need without money. Try it — it really works! Just to name a few things I recently manifested:

  • A friend in the village dropped off a huge bag of organic produce for me!
  • My neighbour really loved one of my paintings but couldn’t afford it so we did an exchange — my painting for her mountain bike she didn’t use. Yay!!!

Things happen in mysterious ways, so keep your eyes peeled for opportunity!

Turning Trust into Money

“Someone who thinks the world is always cheating him is right. He is missing that wonderful feeling of trust in someone or something.”
— Eric Hoffer

How Trust Can Bring You Abundance

I believe in what I do and what I have to say, so when I saw this new video circulating Facebook I just had to share it with you.

It’s called An 8-Foot-Tall Woman Is Destroying The Entire Music Industry’ and it’s a TED talk by Amanda Palmer.  Take a look for yourself, in case you haven’t seen this already:

The Penny Drops!

What this brave and courageous woman had to say resonated so much with my soul, it left me shell-shocked for about an hour while I tried to process this invaluable information and apply it to my entire life.

What stood out for me were the similar experiences of self-doubt:

  • Is what I’m doing of use to others?
  • Should I get a ‘real’ job?
  • Am I just kidding myself?

I have 3 passions in life, every one of them has brought me to these questions (and brought me to my knees!).

Careers with Bad Reputations

I started out as a musician in a band but…

My Limiting Belief:  Musicians are bums and lay-abouts, they don’t ear money. No-one takes you seriously.  Get a real job.

Then I pursued my love for art and I became a full-time artist but…

My Limiting Belief:  You can’t make money being an artist, you’ll struggle all your life.  Get a real job.

Then — oh God forbid — I started to write!  And…

My Limiting Belief:  Writers are poor, they don’t earn money.  If you don’t make it onto the Best Sellers list you’ll never make it.  Get a real job.

Money, Monks and Misunderstandings

The Peacock Nymph by Cherie Roe Dirksen

The worst part of it was that I am a ‘spiritual’ writer and there is a hefty stigma that you should not earn money off spiritual advice.  After all, stereo-typically monks, nuns and Buddhists are humble, simple, poor people.

I also tend to shudder when I see a sight offering spiritual advice accompanied by a paid subscription.  However, I’m the one with the problem — everyone has a right to earn money.

Money is an energy swap.  I give you, you give me.  The figure of eight is complete and everyone walks away with an equal exchange.

I am one of those people who cringes when I have to ask for money.  Something in me thinks that it’s like begging and that is shameful.  I seriously need to get over it if I’m going to keep up my chosen career.  If I don’t, there’s a nice cashier job waiting for me at my local grocer.

The Two Common Stumbling Blocks

Asking for this ‘energetic exchange’ or money brings a strange dichotomy.  The problem, as I see it, lies with these two things:

  • Self-belief/love — Do you believe that your product/service/talent is worth it?  I.e. are you worth it? Are you creating/providing a service from a place of love and passion?  Or is this a means to an end?  From my experience, if you don’t love what you’re doing, you’re in big trouble when it comes to integrity.  Doubt will creep in where there is no passion.
  • Fair exchange — Here’s the humdinger.  What to charge? Yikes, I’ve encountered so many people who suffer big time with this.  They either charge too little for their expertise or they charge too much.  In the latter case, it’s just because they may be in a profession where there is potential to charge a lot but they are not experientially there yet.  They shoot themselves in the foot by charging professional prices with beginners experience.

The Solution

Ginger Goddess by Cherie Roe Dirksen CLN

Love what you do.  Have a burning passion for what you do.  Trust in your clientele or the people you exchange your services with.  If there is a way that you can let them determine what you are worth, then go for it.  Trust that they will reimburse you with fairness and integrity.

I’m not saying everyone will give you what you or your services are worth but it’s in my experience that more people than not, will compensate you appropriately when given the chance.

Letting as Opposed to Making

In the video, Amanda Palmer said that instead of asking how to make people pay for services you should let them pay.  That was my ‘a-ha’ moment.

With our economies in collapse and the entire global population wondering if money will even be present in our future, this novel idea of trust in commerce rings bells in my head.

We are moving into a new consciousness on this planet — heart-centered living — and this kind of energy exchange just might work!

Let’s Put Integrity to the Test

I’m willing to put my money where my mouth is (pun intended!).  I’ve just self-published my second book, ‘Carpe Diem or Bust — a Spiritual Guide to the Good Life’, and I want to share it with the world — whether I make money from it or not.

Of course, I’d like to make money as I’ve also got bills to pay but I believe in this book so much that I’d rather it got read than having it be just another Amazon book statistic. That’s not why I wrote it.

I know it will help people but I also know that a lot of people won’t read it because they can’t afford the luxury of buying books right now.  So, in light of what has just been discussed, I am offering my book to you for free.

I trust that you will enjoy it and find the information on the pages of value and should you wish to contribute — by donating to keep me and my passions alive — then you are most welcome to pay whatever you want to.

Finding God and a Reason for Being Here

“I believe in God, but not as one thing, not as an old man in the sky. I believe that what people call God is something in all of us. I believe that what Jesus and Mohammed and Buddha and all the rest said was right. It’s just that the translations have gone wrong.” — John Lennon

A Non-Religious Point of View

I just want to say from the off that I do not subscribe to any religion and am not pushing any particular doctrine in this article, I am merely purveying the teachings of which I am most familiar with.

I have a great respect for all the various religious prophets.

From the time I was a young girl I have found the church and religious doctrine a very hard concept to grapple with. My father insisted I attend church every Sunday up until the age of sixteen, something I resented him for, but now, find to be not only a very synchronistic part of my life but a necessary part of my greater understanding.

Sampling Tasty Tit-Bits from the Melting Pot

Boat at Sunset PrintWhen I hit my teens, I started to sniff around gathering insights to other religions and spiritual practices.  I found that there is actually a common thread amongst them, one sacred truth to be shared – love.

“Rivers, ponds, lakes and streams – they all have different names, but they all contain water. Just as religions do – they all contain truths.”— Muhammad Ali

Although I never liked the power and control the church had over its congregation, I always thought there was some very spiritually sound advice in the Bible.  Some things did have their roots planted in truth, but I also felt that other teachings did not and had the air of control and suppression.

The Anointed One

The parables of Jesus Christ always felt like he had a greater understanding of the intrinsic nature of humanity and the way this world should be experienced – especially when he spoke of our innate divinity – being the sons and daughters of God.

I feel his teachings were deeply rooted in an inborn truth.  The meaning of which translates to a profound spiritual morality that addresses 4 fundamental core emotions and practices for humanity:

  1. Compassion,
  2. understanding,
  3. non-judgment and
  4. love.

If you want to solve all of the world’s problems, start practicing this list.  See divinity in others and you are well on your way to mastery.  I wrote an article a while ago addressing the fear-based myths about God and how to view humanity as you would view your own family and loved ones — you can read about that HERE.

Your Veracity Determines Your Reality

Tree PrintOur truths are buried deep inside, and the whole process of enlightenment is to shine a light on them.  When we do, we bring ourselves into complete clarity, alignment and wholeness.  This is not done by adding to ourselves, it is achieved by going within.  A good place to start is to adopt regular meditational practice (5 Easy Steps to Meditation) and to start exercising trust of your gut instincts.

“The flowering of love is meditation.” — Jiddu Krishnamurti

Jesus was a regular ‘hippy’ spreading the news of love for one another. If you clear all the dogma away around Jesus his message was simple:

‘Unconditional and Unequivocal Love’

We are Divine expressions experiencing the miracle of perceived natural life in the universe.

This life experience is a journey of self-discovery and should be that of joy, love, abundance, peace and wisdom.  You are in the driver’s seat of your life – steer it in the direction you want to head for not in the direction someone else programmed into your GPS.

Your life, your choices.

Source Energy and Experiential Life

The Hindus call the eternal, unchanging infinite that is beyond this universe, Brahman.  They refer to this reality/world as Maya – the personification that the material world is merely an illusion.

“Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.” Albert Einstein

Lavender Field PrintThis illusory reality world concept can also be seen in the Matrix Trilogy, as humans are literally ‘plugged in’ to a computer-generated world (God bless the Wachowski siblings for making this movie and giving us such an amazing example of this very difficult theory!).

We seem to have lost the ability to see the forest for the trees.  We go around feeling a pit in our stomachs, that feeling that something is missing.

What is missing is your connection to Source.  The ultimate illusion is that you are lacking it.  You aren’t missing anything, you have just forgotten that it exists – and it exists within you.  Your heart center holds the vibration and frequency of the Creators love, the only true building block to your inevitable life’s manifestations.

Feeling Lost?

Home is where your heart is means that anywhere you are is your home – this could even refer to the planet you now find yourself upon.

You are never alone, because where you are, there is God.  Yearning to be somewhere or to be someone else is a self-defeating and self-destructive rehearsal.  Make peace with where you are, who you are and when you are and you will find your place in this world theatre – where you are the writer, director and actor of your very own stage production.

You are the Drop, so Own the Ocean!

We are all Creators living out our creation, we seem to have forgotten that. The ripples, that were born of the one drop, changed their size, and eventually went so far out into the ocean they forgot they were the ocean to begin with – the Source.

Enjoy your life and make your home at the core of your being.

“Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”― Anonymous, Holy Bible: King James Version

What Does Thanks-Giving Mean to You?

Now for those of you wondering what a South African has to say about Thanksgiving — this is not about the American holiday, it is about the art and practice of gratitude.

Why is Gratitude Important?

Gratitude, like everything else in the universe, is a workable energy. On the scale of polarity, it is a positive energy that when used will attract more of the like back to you.

What Does this Mean?

This means that the more you ‘give thanks’ for the things in your life, whether they be your family, friends, your health, roof over your head, food in the fridge, your clothes, car, etc — the more of that energy will be returned to you.

Whether it be through appreciation or just the universe giving you more of what you are grateful for.

“We often only tend to see the lack we are experiencing”

Gratitude should be given for everything and anything. Try to see all the positive things, people or situations you have in your life. Make a list, if you can. You will be surprised at how much there is to be thankful for. Then keep on reminding yourself when you are feeling lack – pull out the list and read it!

We often only tend to see the lack we are experiencing. When this is the prime focus you are attracting more of that energy into your life. This is how energy works or what is referred to as the Law of Attraction.

Like Attracts Like

So when you are putting thoughts out there of lack or longing, your energy is that of lack and longing and that is what you will continue to draw into your life.

Change your thoughts by simply altering your energy from lack to gratitude. There is always something to be grateful for. Even if it is the air that you are breathing — that is keeping you alive — be grateful!

Just the fact that you woke up in a warm bed and with a roof over your head is testimony to the full life you are leading. We take too much for granted.

“As you open to receive, your heart will expand and this feeling is elation and bliss”

When you alter your energy you will ‘feel’ it. When you experience the ‘not having’ you will feel it in your solar plexus (stomach area), this feels like you’ve been punched in the gut. Not a nice feeling at all. It can even lead you to feel nauseous.

An Attitude for Gratitude

When you alter that energy to gratitude, you are moving up on the scale of positivity and you should begin to shift that feeling out of your solar plexus and start to feel a more expansive feeling in your chest. This is commonly referred to as your heart chakra.

As you open to receive, your heart will expand and this feeling is elation and bliss — much better than being kicked in the stomach, eh?

Try it out. You have everything to gain and nothing to lose. Shift your attitude and embrace gratitude. Your life will change. Practicing the art of gratitude allows for you to start experiencing your life the way it was meant to be lived.

Make every day thanks-giving day!

I want to keep on reminding you about gratitude.  Why?  Because to be in a state of thankfulness you are very close if not touching internal peace.

When you brim with gratitude, that feeling is overwhelmingly heart-centred and can literally make you glow.  To be mindful of all that is right for you in the world now instead of harping on all that is wrong, brings you into alignment with abundance.

Think of abundance as your ‘happy place’.  It’s not just about being rich, it’s about experiencing all the good things life has to offer…joy, peace, bliss, health, material wealth, love, friendship, etc.

What is Abundance and How Do I Get It?

Now Don’t Just Think of Money!

When we think of the word abundance most of us jump straight to material wealth.  However, abundance, like the word ‘wealth’, does not only mean physical treasures.

Wealth can be measured by your physical wealth or health.  Without your health you could be the richest person in the world and it would mean nothing.

“…the umbrella of wealth covers so much more than money.”

Wealth can also refer to your mental frame of mind, as in the case with health, if you are mentally ill all the gold in the world won’t help you.

Having meaningful relationships, whether romantic or otherwise is of great importance.  In other words, you have a lot of money but no-one to share it with – not much fun either!

“…you could be the poorest or the richest person in the world and still suffer a huge amount of pain if you feel that everything is worthless and your life has no meaning. “

Then there is of course the financial wealth which we all think will solve our problems but as you can see from the list above, this is not always the case.  Of course, it is wonderful to have no money worries and to be able to buy anything you desire or go any place in the world or just to have enough to pay the bills – I am not denying that.  But the umbrella of wealth covers so much more than money.

The most important of all is the wealth of spirit.  Without this you will be searching your whole life for meaning to it all and you could be the poorest or the richest person in the world and still suffer a huge amount of pain if you feel that everything is worthless and your life has no meaning.

The Distortion of Wealth

Unfortunately, through most media outlets we are being pumped with the need for greed.  This is another clever ploy by the ‘elite’ to keep us in a cycle of want and ‘tunnel vision’.

“We are being manipulated on a massive scale to keep us from seeing certain truths about our reality.”

Be very careful of the need for riches and try to assess why you want all that money anyway.  Always try to see the root of the desire and be mindful and appreciative of the trees in the forest instead of not seeing the forest for the trees.

We are being manipulated on a massive scale to keep us from seeing certain truths about our reality.  This is being done to keep our minds preoccupied with meaningless pursuit.  This is what I mean by being ‘mindful’ of your desires.  Are they really yours?  Or are you having the wool pulled over your eyes?  So be clear about what you want and why you want it.

How Can I Feel Abundant When I Have Nothing?

A good starting place, to manifest your dreams, is to start with being grateful for what you do have.   That which you consider being of wealth to you.  This could be having a close family or a special talent or even the fact that you have a roof over your head and food in the fridge.

6 Tips on How to Get to Where You Want to Be

 Autumn Whispers Poster

“There is no sugar-coating this theory because the time for pandering this issue is over.  “

For those of you new to the Law of Attraction (LOA) – read on.  For those who understand the LOA — it’s of great benefit to recap what you already know to glean information that may have previously not been taken on board.

Get With the Law of Attraction Program!

Simply put — the LOA states that like attracts unto itself.  Whatever you think about the most you attract into your experience.

“You must take responsibility for what you have created in the past so that you can start creating a better future.”

Autumn Whispers Poster 2There is no sugar-coating this theory because the time for pandering this issue is over.  We have got to get real and face the consequences of our unconscious creations.

I have been practicing this concept for a good few years now and it is REAL.

When I look back into my past and ask ‘what I was thinking?’ — creating such chaos — I soon find that there definitely was a train of thought that led to certain events (albeit undesirable events).

You must take responsibility for what you have created in the past so that you can start creating a better future.

Get Your Good Vibrations Dial Tuned In

We co-create everything in our experience.  Not only through thoughts but through vibration — what we feel.

What we feel sends out a strong signal or frequency and that is mainly what the LOA works with.

It can’t decipher words as such — only the vibration or feeling behind the words.  So, to think that you don’t want something only reiterates that which is unwanted.

Huh?

Are you Holding your Fat Rolls in Discontent?

When you think about losing weight, for instance, you are most likely concentrating on how fat you are not how thin you want to be.  You are probably looking into the mirror holding your fat rolls and sending out a frequency of self-loathing and discontent.

“The first step to creating the life of your dreams is to get real about your ‘head space’.  “

What then happens is the Universe picks up on that which you are thinking about  — the fat — and sees to it that you receive more.

Choosing From the Cosmic Menu

This is what I know:

  1. We are living in a Universe of abundance.
  2. The Universe holds the building blocks to everything.
  3. The Universe is continuously expanding to our every whim.
  4. There is enough abundance for all.
  5. The Universe is manifesting according to our will but it can only deliver that which it sees as being called into existence by us.
  6. We need to seriously filter our thoughts and emotions in order to project what we want to manifest in our lives — if we don’t do this, we still end up creating our experience through our random, unfiltered thought streams and feelings.

The Taming of the Mind

The first step to creating the life of your dreams is to get real about your ‘head space’.

  • What is going on upstairs?
  • Is it a continuous loop of worried thoughts or random streams of mindless pap?
  • Can you devote some time in your day (only 5-10 minutes is required to get you started) to meditate?

“Meditation is allowing your self to just exist with no distraction.”

Meditation, in essence, only means sitting still in a quiet area and blanking out your mind.

Not thinking of anything and just being.  You don’t have to sport a lotus position or hum and chant if it does not resonate with you.  Meditation is allowing your self to just exist with no distraction.

If you find it hard to meditate then seek help, guided meditations or classes.  This is a paramount step to decluttering your mind and clearing the way for positive thought streams.

Jump in the Drivers Seat, Take Your Life for a Spin

When you can apply the breaks to your negative thought streams, you are in control.  When you have this capability, you are on your way to manifesting your dreams.

Pick up a glass and toast to your new co-creator abilities!
